Russia's standing amongst global rivalries after its last aircraft carrier discontinues
Admiral Kuznetsov
, making it the only permanent member of the United Nations Security Council without an operational aircraft carrier. This decision marks a significant decline in Russia's naval aviation capabilities and reshapes the global balance of maritime power.
Western adversaries: Commanding the seas
The United States continues to dominate naval aviation with an impressive fleet of 11 nuclear-powered supercarriers, including the technologically advanced Ford-class equipped with
electromagnetic catapults
(EMALS), cutting-edge radar, and integrated drone operations. Complemented by nine amphibious assault ships capable of deploying stealth F-35B fighters, the U.S. Navy maintains unparalleled global reach and strike capability.
NATO
allies further strengthen this dominance. The
United Kingdom
fields two Queen Elizabeth-class carriers operating F-35B stealth jets, while France operates the nuclear-powered Charles de Gaulle with Rafale M fighters and catapult launch systems. Italy and Spain also contribute with smaller carriers integrating advanced aircraft like the F-35B and Harrier jets. Collectively, NATO navies operate over 16 aircraft carriers, maintaining high interoperability and readiness through frequent joint exercises.

Ammunition production: Russia surges ahead
In 2024 and 2025, Russia's defense industry has shifted to a full "war economy," allowing it to produce about 3 million artillery shells per year, nearly three times the combined output of the United States and Europe. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and U.S. General Christopher Cavoli have both confirmed that Russia now manufactures in just three months what all NATO countries produce in a year. Russia's monthly output of artillery shells stands at around 250,000, while the U.S. currently produces about 40,000 shells per month and aims to reach 90,000 monthly by 2026. The European Union, meanwhile, is racing to catch up, with plans to reach 2.5 million shells annually by 2025.
This explosive growth is backed by major investments in new facilities, such as a massive explosives plant in Siberia, which is expected to produce enough RDX to fill over a million 152 mm shells annually. Russia's production costs are also drastically lower, about 10 times less per shell than NATO equivalents, thanks to state subsidies and a managed economy.

Defence budgets: Russia vs NATO
This naval gap is mirrored in defense spending. NATO's combined military expenditure reached a staggering $1.5 trillion in 2024, with the United States alone accounting for nearly $997 billion, more than six times Russia's entire military budget. By comparison, Russia's military spending was estimated at $149 billion in 2024, even after a dramatic 38% increase over the previous year. NATO's new target of 5% of GDP for defense could push these numbers even higher by 2035, further widening the gap. In sheer numbers, NATO also outpaces Russia in active personnel, aircraft, and naval vessels by wide margins.
While new aircraft carriers are not on the immediate agenda due to financial and industrial constraints, Russia is building large amphibious assault ships (
Project 23900 Ivan Rogov-class
). These vessels can carry helicopters, landing craft, armored vehicles, and troops, providing flexibility for littoral operations, disaster relief, and potentially even supporting short takeoff and landing aircraft in the future.
Limited carrier presence among other partners
Other Russian partners, including Iran and North Korea, lack aircraft carriers, relying instead on submarines and missile craft. Countries like Brazil, Egypt, and Thailand maintain single, older carriers primarily for regional defense and helicopter operations.
The scrapping of the Admiral Kuznetsov highlights a growing technological and strategic divide. Western carriers boast stealth aircraft, EMALS, and integrated drone fleets, while China and India continue to develop but remain behind. Russia's exit from carrier aviation signals a shift in focus toward submarines, hypersonic missiles, and unmanned naval platforms, reducing its ability to project air power at sea.

We Tibetans deeply indebted to India for warm hospitality: Dalai Lama
File photo: Dalai Lama NEW DELHI: In a special message read out at a day-long conference organised here to mark his 90th birthday, the Dalai Lama said "we Tibet ans" are deeply indebted to the govt and people of India for the warm hospitality they have shown since 1959, even as he indirectly questioned China's claim over Tibet. The Tibetan spiritual leader recalled how it had been more than 66 years since a large number of Tibetans, including him, fled to India following the "Chinese Communist invasion of Tibet". Referring to India as "Arya Bhumi" in his written message read out at the conference by his confidant and noted scholar Samdhong Rinpoche, the Dalai Lama said that "here (India) I have enjoyed the freedom and opportunity to continue my studies of ancient Indian wisdom". He felt a "special closeness" to India, which, over and above being the world's most populous country and the largest democracy, is the land of the Buddha, the place where he attained enlightenment, he added. Reflecting on the profound impact the 14th Dalai Lama has had on the world, a declaration adopted at the conference organised by International Buddhist Confederation and attended by nearly 500 participants, including renowned Buddhist monks and scholars, hailed him for having consistently championed the preservation of the rich Tibetan culture and religious freedom. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "His (Dalai Lama) recent statement announcing the continuation of his reincarnation, and only by Tibetan people without any foreign interference is a testament of preserving its culture and heritage," the declaration stated. "His wisdom in safeguarding the sacred institution of the Dalai Lama - particularly his clear and courageous stance on its future - stands as a beacon of spiritual integrity in the modern world," it said. In his message, the Dalai Lama added, "I believe that if aspects of India's ancient wisdom, of which the Buddha's teachings are a part, are combined with modern education they can make a beneficial contribution to greater peace and happiness in the world". Recalling that soon after "we Tibetans" came to India, the Dalai Lama said the Indian govt actively supported establishment of schools for Tibetan children to receive modern education while also learning about Tibetan culture and traditions.

Hemant flags hacking of JMM's X account
1 2 Ranchi: JMM president and chief minister Hemant Soren on Sunday said the official X account of his party has been hacked, prompting him to order a police investigation into it. Apart from expressing concern over the breach, the chief minister appealed to the Elon Musk-owned social media giant to take cognisance of the matter. Party members said at 12:12 am on Sunday, the hackers posted a suspicious link along with an image of a rodent on the JMM's X account, which was immediately flagged by Hemant on his social media platform. No other activity related to hacking was detected on the account thereafter. Taking to X, Hemant, who is in Delhi to attend to his ailing father Shibu Soren, wrote, "The official X handle of JMM @JmmJharkhand has been hacked by anti-social elements. @JharkhandPolice please take cognisance of this matter and investigate it promptly. @XCorpIndia please take cognisance of this matter. @GlobalAffairs" In the recent past, a series of cyber attacks have also targeted social media accounts of politicians, top-ranked bureaucrats, political parties and websites of prominent govt organisations in Jharkhand, exposing the growing vulnerability of digital platforms. The latest attack on the official X handle of JMM was also just the tip of the iceberg. Around one and a half months ago, state agriculture minister Shilpi Neha Tirkey also fell victim to a cybercrime. According to the minister, her Instagram and Facebook accounts were compromised. Experts said these incidents were not isolated cases. Just days ago in June, cyber frauds impersonated Ranchi DC Manjunath Bhajantri, raising concerns about his identity theft with the intention to defraud and cheat others of their hard-earned money or gain sensitive information. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? Techno Mag Learn More Undo The DC's office immediately announced that someone had impersonated the officer's Facebook account, thus preventing any further damage. . Similarly, the social accounts of Hazaribag DC Shashi Prakash Singh and his Dhanbad counterpart Aditya Ranjan were also faked. In both cases, the fraudsters were found engaging in conversations with the known contacts of the two officers, to demand money or collect sensitive information. The hackers, however, failed in their attempts after the offices of the DCs also issued warnings about the hacking. Even political leaders have not been spared by these cyber frauds as Panki BJP MLA from Palamu, Shashi Bhushan Mehta, was duped of Rs 1.27 lakh on July 1. Moreover, websites of prominent organisations like Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), too, have suffered technical glitches, sparking speculations of being hacked by fraudsters originating in a foreign country. According to cyber experts, hackers are often sponsored by enemy countries and they can have multiple intentions behind their attacks. "Many times, these attacks are sponsored by neighbouring enemy states to retrieve crucial information by gaining access to the social media platforms of prominent figures and organisations," said Vineet Kumar, the founder and global president of CyberPeace Foundation. He informed that the attacks are launched at critical and sensitive infrastructure, including water treatment and energy plants, and hospitals to disrupt normal activities and create chaos. "Apart from information gathering, many attacks are orchestrated for financial fraud and duping people. The newest form of financial fraud that has been emerging is that Indian nationals are being trafficked to Cambodia via Thailand and employed in scam centres run by India's enemy countries to dupe Indian citizens," Kumar added. As the menace is growing rapidly, law-enforcing agencies have also been taking a proactive stance against it. On July 5, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) busted an organised Chinese cybercrime network, arresting seven individuals involved in illegal investment scams and digital arrests. Police sources said the modus operandi of the hackers and their sponsors was to send malicious apps to smartphones linked with bank accounts. "Once the phone owner installed the apps, they automatically transmit OTPs and all bank alerts sent to the particular phone to servers controlled from China. This enabled the Chinese hackers to gain remote access to the Indian bank accounts which were then used to transfer the defrauded money to offshore accounts," the source added.

Shelter of solidarity: Activists join hands to honour their own on his 60th birthday
1 2 Vijayapura: It is a universal trend to publish a congratulatory book on notable personalities when they attain the ages of 60, 75, or other significant years. However, Anil Hosamani, a dedicated activist who lived in a shed-like structure and runs a printing press to spread the thoughts of Ambedkar, Basavanna, and Gandhiji, received a unique felicitation on his 60th birthday on Sunday. His fellow activists and like-minded people moved his belongings to a temporary shed - to construct a permanent house. Basavaraj Sulibhavi of Ladai Prakashana told TOI that they decided to construct a house at a cost of Rs 18 lakh through crowdfunding. "His house is already named 'Samvidhana Mane' (Constitution House), as he always fought to uphold constitutional values in society. We are firm on not accepting any contribution either from politicians or from the govt. Many activists are lending help in the form of cement, bricks, jelly stones, sand, iron, doors, windows, fans, and other construction materials and equipment. Many like-minded organisations and fora are extending their support for this cause," he explained. Construction started with the recital of Ambedkar's thoughts and Basavanna's vachanas at Ibrahimpur railway gate, followed by a seminar on Anil Hosamani's contributions, at Ambedkar Bhavan in Vijayapura. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Mallikarjun Heggalagi, a senior writer, noted that constructing a house for an activist and writer is a rare occurrence in the state. "Hosamani was imprisoned and assaulted by police for his involvement in various struggles in favour of farmers, labourers, Dalits, and poor people throughout his life. His father, Chandrashekhar Hosamani, resigned from his govt job, influenced by Ambedkar's thoughts and started a daily. Following him, Anil met Savita, Ambedkar's second wife, in 1983 in Vijayapura. Savita said, "fight against injustice and don't lose hope," and Anil followed her words throughout his life. He runs 'Bahujana Nayaka' daily to spread Ambedkar's ideology from his printing press, which is named after Ambedkar," he said. Veteran journalist Sanathkumar Belagali noted that normally activists' wards turn away from activism. "However, Anil is an exception, continuing his father's legacy. He is fortunate that his son Sangharsh is also following the same line of activism. He has also translated a book 'Ambedkar Sahavasadalli' from Marathi, which received an award from the Karnataka Sahitya Academy. However, Hosamani has never bothered about his living. Now it is good that his co-activists and supporters have united to construct a house on his ancestral site of 1,400 sqft," he lauded.
