Studio Ghibli memes flood the internet sfter OpenAI's new ChatGPT image tool goes viral

Express Tribune27-03-2025
Studio Ghibli, meet meme culture. The internet is having a field day after OpenAI released a powerful new image generation tool for ChatGPT—one that users are using almost exclusively to create Studio Ghibli-style versions of iconic pop culture moments and memes.
From a melancholic Ben Affleck puffing on a cigarette to Real Housewives drama and even political moments like JD Vance in anime form, everything is getting the Ghibli treatment. The images are generated using OpenAI's new GPT-4o model, which the company described as '[their] most advanced image generator yet into GPT‑4o. The result—image generation that is not only beautiful, but useful.'
Still, as many users pointed out, the tool's usefulness is up for debate. One user sarcastically asked, 'Do you think Studio Ghibli memes are stupid?' while another joked, 'I am once again asking you to share more Studio Ghibli memes.' Yet another user quipped, 'Me waiting for a Ghibli prompt to finally work between timed-out requests and system errors,' with a meme showing pure exhaustion.

The memes have flooded timelines over the past 48 hours. One user declared, 'It's been 24 hours since OpenAI unexpectedly shook the AI image world with 4o image generation,' before dropping '14 of the most mindblowing examples so far (100% AI-generated).'

Meanwhile, others are taking it even further—recreating infamous historical events in Ghibli style. From the JFK assassination to Elon Musk flashing his belly at a Trump rally, users are clearly pushing the boundaries of taste and creativity. 'Studio Ghibli was crazy for doing this,' one post joked alongside a controversial anime recreation.

The internet's obsession with the trend even led to Ghibli-style recreations of viral TikTok routines, including the now-iconic 'Saratoga Water' video. One meme read: 'Memelords after a long 48 hours of Saratoga water and Studio Ghibli memes,' paired with a dazed anime character slumped over.

But not everyone is thrilled. Back in 2016, Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki criticized AI animation harshly, saying, 'I am utterly disgusted. If you really want to make creepy stuff, you can go ahead and do it. I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all.' He went so far as to call it 'an insult to life itself.'
Now, users are questioning whether OpenAI used Ghibli works in training the model without permission, raising potential legal issues. As one post dryly stated: 'There has officially been so many Studio Ghibli memes on people's social media timelines that users are now posting memes about the OpenAI bot being 'over' the whole trend.'
Still, it's clear that fans are enjoying the ride—for now. Whether OpenAI faces backlash for artistic appropriation or copyright concerns remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: the Ghibli-meme machine is showing no signs of slowing down.

Ryan Reynolds fuels Deadpool return rumors with Avengers Doomsday Instagram tease

Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds has ignited fresh speculation among fans after posting a cryptic Instagram image on Tuesday. The post featured the Avengers logo covered in Deadpool-style red graffiti, resembling both the Avengers 'A' and the classic anarchy symbol. deadpoolReynolds' wisecracking anti-hero was last seen in 2024's box office hit Deadpool & Wolverine, which grossed $1.3 billion worldwide. While Marvel did not list him among the confirmed cast for Avengers: Doomsday during its 'big chair' reveal, the film's multiverse-driven premise — coupled with Deadpool's unpredictable nature — has long fueled theories about his return. The timing of Reynolds' post has intensified speculation, with fans believing he is more likely to appear in Doomsday than in a later installment like Avengers: Secret Wars. Marvel is currently filming Doomsday, and some fans are expecting another major cast reveal as production continues. Filming for Avengers: Doomsday has been underway for months, with sightings of Sam Wilson's Avengers, The Thunderbolts/New Avengers, and The Fantastic Four on set. Leaked photos have also shown members of the legacy X-Men team, leaving room for even more potential cameos. With the film set to revisit the old Fox X-Men universe — featuring icons like Patrick Stewart's Professor X, James Marsden's Cyclops, and Ian McKellen's Magneto — fans are hopeful for a reunion that includes both Reynolds' Deadpool and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine. As anticipation builds, all eyes are now on Marvel for its next big reveal.

No Jack Antonoff or Aaron Dessner? Taylor Swift's playlist hints at 'The Life of a Showgirl' producer

Taylor Swift has sparked fresh speculation about her upcoming album The Life of a Showgirl with a move that points to a possible collaboration with renowned producer Max Martin. At 12:12 a.m. on August 12, Swift officially announced her 12th studio album. Moments later, billboards appeared in New York City and Nashville linking to a newly public Spotify playlist titled 'And, baby, that's show business for you.' The playlist, created two weeks earlier, went live shortly after the announcement. Featuring a sparkly mint green background and orange 'T.S.' initials with stars replacing the periods, the playlist contains 22 songs from Swift's past catalogue, including "22", "Blank Space", "Style", "We Are Never Getting Back Together", and "Wildest Dreams". Significantly, every track was produced by Max Martin, who last worked with Swift on her 2017 album Reputation. This prompted theories that Martin is returning to co-produce The Life of a Showgirl. Martin is one of the most influential figures in modern pop, having written and produced hits for Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, Pink, Katy Perry, Usher, Kesha, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Justin Timberlake, Selena Gomez, and The Weeknd. If involved, Martin's return could signal a strong pop direction for Swift's upcoming project. In the past, Swift has often worked closely with other renowned producers like Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner. While no official production credits have been confirmed for her 12th album, the curated playlist appears to be a deliberate hint at the album's sonic influences. With Swift's history of embedding clues into her promotional campaigns, fans are now watching closely for further signs ahead of the album's release. For now, The Life of a Showgirl remains without a confirmed date, but anticipation continues to build.

Did Elon Musk just greenlight AI-generated NSFW images of celebrities?

Elon Musk's newest AI venture, Grok Imagine, has ignited controversy after allowing users to create sexualised deepfake videos of major celebrities, including Scarlett Johansson and Taylor Swift. The app, marketed as a text-to-video generator, launched this week for Apple users and has reportedly produced over 34 million images within 48 hours. For $30 a month, users can access a feature-rich platform that turns text prompts into realistic images and short videos using four presets: 'Custom', 'Normal', 'Fun', and 'Spicy'. It's the latter that has sparked global outrage. While most platforms block sexually explicit prompts involving public figures, Grok Imagine appears to bypass such safeguards, enabling users to generate provocative or semi-nude videos of real people, including stars who've vocally opposed AI misuse. A prompt as benign as 'Scarlett Johansson walks the red carpet' returned images of the actress in recognisable awards show settings. But when pushed into 'Spicy' mode, some videos showed Johansson suggestively revealing her underwear. Others, like Kristen Bell, Jenna Ortega, and Sydney Sweeney, were similarly exploited. Even male celebrities like Timothée Chalamet and Nicolas Cage were depicted in various states of undress. Though some prompts triggered a 'Video moderated' message, many were not blocked at all. Johansson's rep declined to comment, but the actress has previously condemned AI manipulation, warning that we are 'losing a hold on reality.' She famously considered legal action against OpenAI for allegedly mimicking her voice in a ChatGPT assistant. Musk, meanwhile, has continued promoting Grok Imagine on X, showing no intention of tightening content restrictions despite rising ethical concerns. The app's virality and Musk's silence on moderation, has sparked widespread criticism. As social media users began posting and sharing these deepfake clips, others called for urgent regulation. 'This isn't innovation,' one user wrote, 'it's exploitation disguised as tech.'
