Ards' Grace Davison ‘ecstatic' as she claims bronze at European Aquatics Championships

That, along with John Shortt's gold in the 100m Backstroke, helped Ireland to claim two medals as the final night of the Championships got underway, bringing their medal tally up to four, one gold and three bronze.
Davison produced a personal best time of 2:14.05 to claim her second bronze in two days having won in the 100m Freestyle on Saturday night.
The Paris Olympian had a fight on her hands and showed her steel throughout the race. As Davison and her competitors headed into the freestyle leg, the Ards swimmer showed the fight to get her hand on the wall first and light up the blocks, winning her third European Junior bronze by 0.14 of a second.
After the race, Davison said: 'I'm ecstatic, I'm very glad it's all over, I've had a lot of racing this week. Going through the heats, Semis and Finals isn't something that I was really used to, but we've had to do a lot more of it with Olympic Trials last year, the Irish Open this year, I'm definitely getting used to it but it is hard work.
"Last night took it out of me… third tonight, I'm over the moon.'
On winning bronze in a tightly contested race, she added: 'It was pure grit and determination. I know how it feels from winning a medal last year, it feels so much better this year, especially to walk away with two individually.
"For Ireland to come away with four is unbelievable, for people back home, even the younger ones will definitely look up to that. For Ireland to be consistently on the medal table, and high up at all levels is amazing.
'(The support) is unreal, you probably don't see much of it on the livestream, the guys are all here for every Semi-Final, every Final, some even the heats. To walk out and hear all of them is unbelievable, we have been one of the loudest.
"To have so many parents here is great, my parents and sister are here, they've never all watched me swim at something like this, I really feel the support from here and back home.'
Davison will now set her sights on the World Junior Championships at the end of August in Otopeni, Romania.
On the conclusion of the championships, interim Swim Ireland Performance Director Andrew Reid said: 'What a finish to an unforgettable European Aquatics Junior Championships. Grace dug deep in the 200m IM to add another win bronze to her medal collection.
"Across the meet our team delivered four podium finishes, one top eight finish, four top-16 finishes, two new Irish records and 11 personal best swims. From our seasoned veterans to the rising stars making their national team debut, every athlete stepped up, representing Ireland with pride, passion, and determination.
"Well done athletes, team staff and home programme coaches for all your hard work.'

NBC keeps U.S. Open thru 2032 in media rights extension

August 13 - The United States Golf Association is keeping the U.S. Open media rights with NBCUniversal while striking a new agreement for its other championships with NBC's spinoff company, Versant. In all, the 11 USGA championships (professional and amateur) are staying in the familiar confines of NBC, USA Network and Golf Channel. The USGA on Tuesday extended NBC's rights deal to broadcast the U.S. Open through 2032. That deal also includes the U.S. Women's Open and U.S. Senior Open. All coverage will be streamed on Peacock as well. NBC has been the USGA's primary television partner since 1995. In 2015, the USGA struck a 12-year, $1.1 billion deal to team up with Fox Sports, but five years in, Fox paid a lump sum to exit the agreement and the rest of the current deal was transferred to NBC. Financial terms were not revealed. Puck reported that the annual value will be close to the $93 million the current pact is worth. New aspects of the extension include the U.S. Open receiving an extra hour of prime-time broadcast on Thursday and Friday. Meanwhile, the USGA's main amateur championships -- the U.S. Amateur, U.S. Women's Amateur, U.S. Junior Amateur, U.S. Girls' Junior, U.S. Senior Women's Open, U.S. Adaptive Open, Walker Cup and Curtis Cup -- will be carried by Golf Channel. And USA Network will carry roughly 35 hours of live coverage of the U.S. Open and U.S. Women's Open. Versant is the name of the new "spinco" that will be the parent company of most of NBCUniversal's former cable networks, including MSNBC, CNBC and E! as well as Golf Channel and USA. In a news release, Versant trumpeted the deal as its first sports media rights acquisition. "The USGA championships represent some of the most prestigious events in all of golf," Versant president of sports Matt Hong said in a statement. "USA Network's reach and Golf Channel's reputation as the television home of the sport are ideal platforms to bring the USGA championships to golf fans across the country." "We're incredibly proud of the partnership we've built over the years with NBCU and Versant, and we're equally excited to continue building on that legacy throughout our shared passion and dedication -- alongside people we're proud to call our friends," USGA CEO Mike Whan added in a statement. --Field Level Media

Chance to fight for silverware in front of passionate fans a huge draw for me, declares Belfast Giants' new recruit

The 26-year-old Canadian joins Adam Keefe's side from HC Nove Zamky of the Slovak Extraliga where he registered five points in 11 games in the 2024/25 season. The Quebec native, a right-shot forward, also represented the ECHL's Trois-Rivieres Lions where he bagged 13 goals and 24 assists across 59 regular-season appearances. Guay admits he was attracted by the opportunity to fight for trophies and impress in front of the Giants' fanbase, insisting he is hungry to inspire the organisation to further success. 'I'm thrilled to be heading to Belfast,' he said. 'I've heard a lot of good things about the organisation, city and fans. 'The opportunity to compete for Championships and play in front of such a passionate fanbase was a real draw for me. 'I'm ready to get started and contribute however I can to help the team succeed.' Initially starring for the Drummondville Voltigeurs and Charlottetown Islanders in his home province, Guay built a strong reputation for himself having chipped in with 244 points in 301 major junior appearances. He then entered the professional ranks and played for the Abbotstown Canucks in the AHL prior to impressing in his first stint with the Trois-Rivieres Lions. Guay also helped the University of New Brunswick to a USports University Cup crown in the 2022/23 season, and Giants chief Keefe believes that his new recruit's seamless adaptation to a number of different environments will stand to both the player and his side in their EIHL endeavours going forward. 'Nicolas is a strong addition to our roster,' said Keefe. 'He's a smart, responsible player with the ability to create plays and finish chances. 'He had great leadership qualities and experience in different environments, which will serve him well in the Elite League. 'We're excited to see what he can bring to the team this season.'

Moses Itauma reveals decision which led to falling back in love with boxing

The young British heavyweight is destined for greatness in the world of boxing, but has recently detailed how he had to fall back in love with the sport after a rough patch Moses Itauma has revealed coach Ben Davison helped him fully restore his love for the sport of boxing. ‌ The British heavyweight star is set for his toughest fight yet on Saturday night against veteran Dillian Whyte. The 20-year-old has been on a tear as of late and remains unbeaten inside the squared-circle. After announcing himself on the world stage with a destructive win over Mariusz Wach, Itauma followed it up with back-to-back knockout wins over Demsey McKean and Mike Balogun. ‌ That said, it was not all plain sailing for Itauma - who is widely regarded as one of the hottest prospects in boxing's heaviest division. Two years ago, when he made his highly-anticipated debut against Marcel Bode, the young star got off to a flying start and began knocking out people for fun. But the Chatham brawler - who is set to have his fifth fight under the legendary Davison - admitted how he started to 'hate' the sport barely a year after his debut. ‌ 'Being in the ring (sparring) with all these heavyweights Daniel Dubois, Joe Joyce, Tyson Fury, Lawrence Okolie, I know that there are levels to boxing and I just felt like I was unable to learn any more,' Itauma said. The Brit admits that, under the guidance of Davison, he found a new side to the sport. 'I don't want to disrespect any of the coaches I tried or did work with. I love and respect them, but with Ben, he taught me a different side to boxing," he continued. 'He taught me there is more to boxing than punch, punch, get punched, punch back, punch, punch, punch. There is actually a whole chess game to this.' The 20-year-old has steamrolled through every opponent that has been put in front of him and has not gone past the second round since his fourth outing. With 10 of his 12 wins coming by way of knockout, he was once tipped to surpass Mike Tyson's record of becoming the youngest heavyweight champion. Whilst that did not come to fruition, Itauma is a champion in the making. But in order to become the best version of himself, he needs to have the right support and the right team. In March 2024, Itauma split from old trainer Alan Smith, despite scoring a brutal victory over Dan Garber not long before. Over the years, he has tried several different trainers and coaches, but never really seemed to click with anyone - until Davison. Davison, Fury's former coach, helps train several high-level boxers, including Anthony Joshua, Fabio Wardley, Leigh Wood, Shabaz Masoud and Pat McCormack. Opening up on the famous boxing coach, Itauma explained: 'What I mean with falling out of love with boxing is, it was kind of like I felt like I reached a barrier and I was unable to break it. ‌ 'That is why I went around searching for a new trainer to get something new. I tried out a lot of coaches and Ben Davison was actually the last one I tried. If I'll be honest, when I went to Ben, I was like he has too many stars in the gym, he won't really have time for me, he won't give me time I need but my brother was like there is no harm in trying Ben Davison. 'And I went there and as I walked through the doors, there is a glass window on the door where you can see inside the gym and Ben has got all my fights up. He is writing in his notepad and he was like, 'you do this, I don't know if you're aware of it, now we need to make you aware of this and do this, this and this,' and I was like, 'rah, none of the other coaches did that.' 'And it was only when I started sparring, he would say, 'if I do this, he will do this and you can capitalise,' and I would go and do it, it would pay off and I'd be like what! Obviously we just clicked from there but the most impressive thing is how you have so many stars in the gym but each individual fighter gets the necessary time.' When is Moses Itauma vs Dillian Whyte? The 'Esports World Cup Fight Week: Moses Itauma vs Dillian Whyte' will take place on Saturday, August 16. The main undercard is due to get underway at around 5:45 pm UK time (12:45 pm ET / 9:45 am PT). The main event ringwalks will likely take place at around 10:20pm UK time (5:20 pm ET / 2:20 pm PT). All of the action will be streamed live on DAZN Pay Per-View. The event is priced at £19.99 in the United Kingdom, $49.99 in the United States, €19.99 in Europe and $49.95 in Australia.
