T-Mobile delists Go5G plans from its retail system and introduces bizarre new policy

Phone Arena15-06-2025
T-Mobile's Experience More and Experience Beyond plans introduced in April were expected to replace Go5G plans from the get-go and the inevitable has now happened.
T-Mobile claims that its new plans provide more value, but that statement might be a little misleading, considering unlike Go5G plans, the Experience plans don't include taxes and fees. In late April, shortly after the new plans were announced, it was reported that T-Mobile was discouraging employees from activating Go5G plans for customers. The company didn't deny the rumor and only reiterated that the plans would remain available for a limited time.
In May, Go5G plans were removed from the company's website but it mentioned other ways to sign up for them, such as calling T-Mobile or placing an order via chat. And now, the plans have also vanished from T-Mobile 's systems. In essence, the plans have been grandfathered, which means that while people already on Go5G will be able to keep plans, others won't be able to sign up for them.
—SettleAsRobin, Reddit user, June 2025 Apparently, you might still be able to activate Go5G plans through customer care staff, but the retail staff has lost access to them.
Additionally, T-Mobile is also retiring watch and tablet plans with included taxes and fees. From June 18, the company will only offer taxes and fees-excluded versions of these plans. Unlike before, you will be able to mix tax and untaxed plans. This means that even if you are on an old, tax-included plan, your new lines will be tax-included. This might result in some billing confusion, but that's just the way things are now. With Go5G plans all but gone, T-Mobile has moved away from its "What You See Should Be What You Pay" slogan of 2017. The company appears to be reinventing itself as a premium brand. Switch to Total 5G+ Unlimited 3-Month plan or Total 5G Unlimited and get a free iPhone.

The Pixel 10's secret weapon against Apple and Samsung

Google has been gaining momentum with the Pixel series for the past couple of years. The Pixel 9 family got the company into the double-digit market share in North America (from 4.76% in September 2024 to 12.4% in October 2024). Clearly, Google is doing something right, don't you think? I thought so, too, and I was waiting for the Pixel 10 series to land with excitement and a certain level of hype. Well, not Jimmy Fallon-level excitement, but still, I was pretty keen on watching the Made by Google event, not just as a journalist, but as a fan, too. To be honest, I found most of the upgrades, or the lack thereof, bewildering and a bit boring. At least in the beginning. But then it hit me. Smartphone innovation lies elsewhere nowadays, and Google made sure to tweak the Pixel 10 where it really mattered. There's one feature that will help the Pixel family take the fight to the big boys and challenge Apple and Samsung in the years to come. It's not the new camera features, or the PixelSnap accessories, or even the AI magic on board, although the last one is a consequence of that one core feature. It's the new Tensor G5 chipset. And before you throw the latest Geekbench scores in my metaphorical face, let me explain. There's something deeper going on. CPU and GPU scores don't paint the full picture anymore Well that's unimpressive, right? | Image by Geekbench When we talk about smartphone performance, most people think of benchmarks such as Geekbench, 3DMark, or AnTuTu. These have been kind of an industry standard and go-to metrics even for the companies themselves. The fact of the matter, however, is that these metrics, especially the CPU and GPU ones, often don't tell us much about the real-life performance of a smartphone. There are many reasons for this. First, app developers try to optimize their products to run on as many devices as possible. It's just the business model; more devices generally means more profit. There are almost no apps that are designed to take full advantage of the processing power of a flagship smartphone, barring some games. Second, the long software support cycles the big trio is currently doing (Apple, Samsung, and Google) increase the pressure to make the software compatible and run smoothly on older devices. We have two- to three-year-old phones from these brands performing consistently and on par with the latest models. But if you take a look at the synthetic benchmarks, the scores of these older devices are 30-40, sometimes 50%, lower than the scores of the latest flagships. They don't feel twice as slow, though. What gives? The truth is that smartphones are (and have been for some time now) plenty fast when it comes to regular CPU and GPU tasks. There's a new metric that's still under the radar (even though companies are trying to push it into the open) that is going to be much more important in the future. Tensor G5's TPU—what it is and what it does? Google's Trillium TPU is the backbone of Gemini on the Cloud | Image by Google I know this is quite technical, but let's try to skip the boring stuff and get to why it really matters. When language models (LLMs) became a thing a couple of years ago, there was a new demand for a different type of computation. LLMs use neural networks and machine learning to do their magic, and these require a lot of power on regular CPU and GPU units. Google (and other companies) started to develop a specialized silicon, optimized to do these computations. Google's version of that silicon is called TPU (tensor processing unit) and, in fact, has been a core component of the company's data centers, especially after the rise of Gemini. These TPUs outperform normal CPUs and GPUs when it comes to AI tasks, sometimes by orders of magnitude. What's important here is that Google has baked some of that TPU expertise and magic inside the Tensor chip. It's not only capable of on-device AI tasks, but it performs much better communicating with its bigger siblings inside Google's data centers, as they share the same algorithms and instructions. 60% increase in TPU performance is huge Tensor G5 is bringing the most powerful on-device TPU | Image by Google I know I've said benchmarks don't matter, but this one's different. We all saw the AI part of the Made by Google presentation and all the new stuff Pixels can do. Some of it was glittered over a bit, but it generally gives us a glimpse into the future. AI is changing the way we interact with and use our phones. And while high Geekbench CPU scores or high 3DMark scores might not translate into real-life advantages, a 60% increase in TPU performance should be, and will most likely be, felt on the new Pixels. Smartphones are quickly moving away from just opening, running, and closing apps to performing these complex machine learning computations, and Google is making sure Pixel phones are future-proof in that regard. Pixel phones built for the future AI is changing the way we use our phones | Image by Google Some of you might point out that Snapdragon chips have their own dedicated neural network processing unit (NPU), and Apple silicon does too. There's a subtle difference, but it might play out in Google's favor in the long run. Most Android phones are adopting Gemini as a go-to LLM, or at least they have it on board alongside whatever on-device model they are running. Even though Samsung is trying to push its own AI system (Galaxy AI, which uses Nvidia silicon in the cloud), Gemini is now integrated into most of the Galaxy lineup. Apple is still lagging behind with Apple Intelligence and relies on ChatGPT help for most of the workload. There's a strong possibility for Gemini to become the predominant LLM on smartphones, and if this happens, Pixel phones will have a huge advantage. The Tensor G5 and its successors will run Gemini much more efficiently, especially on-device. Snapdragon and Apple silicon might not have the same advantage, especially if Gemini wins the AI war, and even though those chips are faster on paper, in the long run Tensor silicon has better prospects. I know there are a lot of "if"s in this article, but the writing's on the wall. I think Google has placed its chips on the right number (pun intended) and will reap the benefits in the future. What do you think about it? Do you think Pixel phones are a real threat to iPhones and Galaxy phones due to their AI potential, or will Samsung and Apple get their game together and retaliate? T-Mobile changes its lost/stolen phone policy for reps because of T-Life

T-Mobile continues to make life harder for its reps. We've told you before about the metrics they are required to meet every month. This has led some of them to add accessories, insurance, chargers, cases, protective screen covers, and new lines to customers' orders without their consent. Lately, T-Mobile has its reps hung up over the T-Life app that could end up replacing the carrier's retail stores and its human sales crew. Today, an interesting post on social media caught my eye. According to this post, which was apparently written by a T-Mobile rep most likely working out of a corporate-run location, retail management at T-Mobile just received some news from those toiling in the executive suite. When a customer comes into a T-Mobile store with a broken phone or complains that his phone has been lost, the rep will open a new device and hope that the customer has enough equipment credit or the ability to make the down payment for the replacement. The dreaded T-Life app, public enemy number one among T-Mobile reps. | Image credit-PhoneArena Probably the part of this process that will upset the reps most is that they are told to load all of the customer's personal information on the new device. Then, they have to log in through T-Life on the new phone and make the upgrade through the app. Now you might expect that this is a process that has been tested by T-Mobile under real-life conditions, and it was. But as the rep wrote on Reddit, it was tested for " not a month, not 3 weeks" but for only seven days in one city. And yet, the carrier plans on rolling this out nationwide! The Tensor G5-powered Pixel 10 has just been announced, and it's already available for pre-order at Amazon with a sweet $100 gift card. Reserve yours before this promo expires. Pre-order at Amazon Looking for a more flagship Pixel 10 experience in a compact form factor? Consider the Pixel 10 Pro instead! It's available for pre-order at Amazon with a $200 gift card! Pre-order at Amazon Users after a larger screen and a serious Gemini AI prowess should consider the latest Google Pixel 10 Pro XL. The just-announced flagship is available for pre-order with a $200 Amazon Gift Card. Pre-order at Amazon The T-Mobile rep who wrote this said, "To the customers, we apologize. Our company has lost touch with you guys. To the T-Mobile front line who HAS recently been told if you don't do this T-Life stuff you will be fired, and AI will replace you now or later, we have to fight this NOW!" Another T-Mobile rep who works in one of the carrier's Experience stores (which supposedly focus on educating the customer as opposed to making quick sales) said that these locations received the same memo. This rep typed, "Experience stores got the same message. I feel like this needs to get pushed up the compliance chain." Another rep working at a corporate-run location said that the store's Retail Associate Manager just received the memo as well. One of the responses came from a T-Mobile salesperson who didn't care whether the company was opening replacement phones before getting paid for them. This person wrote, "If that's what they want then so be it, not my inventory so idc. Them snatch and grabs about to go crazy." T-Mobile reps are upset about the T-Life app taking over their jobs. Perhaps the best comment follows: "I would have loved to have been in the meeting where they were deciding to handle the problem of how to do lost/stolen phone replacements through 1: "Ooh! I know. The store could have a few old, surplus tablets with T-life on 'em and customers could log in and do the transaction using one of "Interesting idea. Any other proposals?"Person 2: "Oooh! I have a better idea! Let's have the customer open the retail packaging of a new phone that they haven't bought, transfer all the customer's info to it, install T-life, and have them do the upgrade on that device! Most customers might qualify to actually complete the transaction, too!" Boss: "Brilliant! Let's go with that. Here, have some stock options." Personally, I believe that T-Mobile was forced to make this change after a customer with a broken phone recently came into a T-Mobile store and the rep refused to sell him a new phone because he couldn't access T-Life with the broken handset. So how are T-Mobile reps feeling these days about the changes they are asked to make? Well, the title of the original post in the thread ought to give you a good idea. It's titled, "New bs thing for reps coming soon."

Spotify is finally making music sharing on Instagram good with two new features rolling out today

Spotify is putting an end to one of the most awkward experiences on Instagram. Until now, whenever you shared a song from the music streaming platform to an Instagram story, you were only getting a quiet poster and no music at all. With Spotify's latest feature update, that's about to change. The music streaming service announced two new integrations with Instagram. One adds audio previews to songs shared to Instagram Stories, and the other allows real-time music sharing in Instagram Notes. As the name 'audio preview' suggests, when you share a Spotify song, a short audio snippet will be automatically added to your story. That way, your friends will be able to hear what you're sharing. If you stumble upon a shared song that you like, you can tap the song's title at the top of the story and choose 'View Song Details'. That would take you to the song's page on Instagram, from which you can save the track to your Liked Songs on real-time music sharing feature allows you to automatically share what you're listening to on Spotify directly to Instagram Notes. If you activate the feature while you're playing music, the note will update right away. If you're not playing anything, the note will update automatically if you play something within 30 minutes. To use the real-time music sharing feature, you must follow the following steps: On Instagram, tap Messages on the top right of your feed Tap Note... above your profile picture on top of your messages Tap the symbol when creating a note If you haven't linked your Spotify account, tap Link Spotify In the audio browser, tap 'Share from Spotify.' If you want, you can add text to your note Tap 'Share' to post your note Both features are available globally for Spotify and Instagram users on Android and iOS. As someone who listens to a lot of music, I love sharing my favorite discoveries with my friends, including on Instagram. Spotify's sharing options were already ahead of all other music streaming services, but this makes it all even better. The result is that I have one more reason to stick with Spotify instead of Apple Music, even if I'm looking for a way out. Good news everyone! Over the past year we've been working on an exciting passion project of ours and we're thrilled to announce it will be ready to release in just a few short months.
