Watch: Escaped Rietvlei cheetah found and captured

The Citizen3 days ago

Njozi, the female cheetah that escaped from Rietvlei Nature Reserve earlier this week, has been safely captured.
This is according to Obakeng Ramabodu, MMC for Environment and Agriculture Management.
Pretoria Rekord reports that Njozi was located today after she mysteriously escaped yesterday.
Ramabodu confirmed the big cat was found in the Bapsfontein area, thanks to a tracking device fitted on her.
'The team, along with veterinarians, used the tracker to locate Njozi. She is safely recovered without incident,' he said.
He assured the public that Njozi was not harmed during her escape and that she did not cause any injuries or fatalities to the public.
Ramabodu also revealed that the cheetah most likely escaped through a section of the reserve's perimeter fence that had been vandalised.
'We believe the escape was made possible due to damage to the fence,' he said, confirming that vandalism has compromised the reserve's security.
'We are prioritising repairs to the damaged fencing and strengthening safety measures to prevent future escapes. The safety of both wildlife and the surrounding community is non-negotiable,' he said.
Ramabodu added that the department will immediately begin implementing enhanced safety measures to prevent further animal escapes from Rietvlei Nature Reserve.
'We must act swiftly to prevent future incidents, particularly involving the cheetah, which is often targeted. Our greatest concern is the safety of both the animal and the public. We cannot risk losing Njozi to injury, nor can we allow the possibility of her harming someone,' he said.
Njozi was relocated to Rietvlei from the Western Cape and has a history of escaping.
Yesterday, Njozi escaped from the reserve.
Njozi was spotted on the R50 Delmas Road in the area of Bapsfontein, a farming town in Ekurhuleni.
Derek van der Merwe from the Endangered Wildlife Trust said following an extensive search yesterday, Njozi was located in Bapsfontein but couldn't be darted as she ran into dense bushes, and it got dark, so the search was called off.
He added that he believed that Njozi escaped as she was on the search for a male companion.
'If we can bring her a male cheetah, she wouldn't try to run or escape anymore. I am certain she will stay in the reserve with her companion.'
This is not her first stint at escaping. In 2021, she slipped out of the reserve, and after an extensive search by officials and wildlife conservationists, Njozi managed to return on her own.

Watch: Middelburg Provincial Hospital erupts in protest as nurses strike for patients

Protest action has reached fever pitch at Middelburg Provincial Hospital in Mpumalanga, where nurses and cleaning staff have downed tools in solidarity with neglected patients. Middelburg Observer reports that reliable sources in the hospital's wards have confirmed the strike, but said that patient treatment is not being refused. Rather, the strike is for the patients, they said. The protesting staff have made allegations of mismanagement and are demanding that 'management must go'. According to reliable sources, patients have no choice but to bring their bedding or be forced to sleep on mattresses, covered in plastic. 'We have been given disposable plastic gowns by management to cover the mattresses with… There is no water… We only have hot water occasionally, and our patients are frequently forced to bathe in sparse, cold water.' The sources also allege that some staff members have not received overtime payments, with some still waiting for overtime compensation since April. Additionally, they state that the hospital is understaffed, with a ratio of three nurses per 33 patients, and say that the hospital CEO and nursing manager have 'attitudes'. 'The nursing staff are in a very difficult situation, because our patients hold us responsible, in some instances, nurses are assaulted by their patients.' Councillor Elsie Vermooten previously responded to the strike, saying that while she condemns violence and damage to infrastructure, she sympathises with the conditions in which patients are left and nurses have to work. The hospital has been struggling with continued sewage spills, water interruptions and a lack of maintenance for several years. Residents involved in Gholfsig's Tidy Town Project said that the property is overgrown and brimming with rubbish. Visitors often use the bushes to relieve themselves, and growing piles of human excrement are a biological hazard. According to reliable sources, a meeting with management will be held later today. Middelburg Observer has approached the Department of Health for comment on the allegations, but no comment had been received at the time of publishing. Media spokesperson Christopher Nobela said he will investigate and respond accordingly. @middelburgobserver Nurses and cleaning staff strike at Middelburg Provincial Hospital due to decaying conditions. ♬ original sound – MiddelburgObserver – MiddelburgObserver Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel. Sardine run: 25 KZN beaches currently closed for swimming

With the 2025 sardine run already underway, the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board (KZNSB) revealed that they have removed shark safety nets from the waters at 25 beaches along the south coast. The Sharks Board said that that melee of predators accompanying the sardine shoals was problematic, not just to the sardines but also to the Board itself. 'The shark nets that provide bather protection along the beaches take a heavy toll of sharks and dolphins if they are not lifted before the arrival of the Sardine Run,' it said, as per Business Tech. The eThekwini Municipality also announced on Monday, 2 June, that the public was now prohibited from swimming on KwaZulu-Natal's south coast beaches, due to the shark nets being removed. These beaches include: Isipingo Beach Amanzimtoti Beach Warners Beach Winkelspruit Karridene Umgababa Scottburgh Hibberdene Umzumbe Banana Beach Sunwich Port South Port Umtetweni St Micheals On Sea Uvongo Margate Ramsgate Southbroom Kent Bay Umkobi San Lameer Trafalgar Glenmore Leisure Bay To Strand Port Edward Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
