New Delhi: Indian Premier League (IPL) has seen a lot of players being bought on the promise of talent but none was better than a choice Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made ahead of IPL 2021 auction. They bought a player from Punjab Kings (then KXIP) for INR 9.25 crore (US$ 1,273,000 approx.) but never played him in the season.
Moreover, CSK won the title in IPL 2021 and the player – Krishnappa Gotham – went on to win the title without breaking a sweat and pocketing all the money. Before he won with CSK, he already had a title to his name with Mumbai Indians in 2017 – that too without playing for them in the season. Isn't Krishnappa Gowtham the quirkiest buy of the IPL history? Let's have a look at his journey:
Gowtham is only one of the 10 players to win a title with both MI (2017) and CSK (2021) but the only player to do so without playing a single game for any of the franchise. He even played for India in one off ODI in July 2021 against Sri Lanka and that remains his only international appearance.
It was with Rajasthan Royals in 2018 that Gowtham caught limelight of Shane Warne – Royals skipper during 2008 IPL title win. He played full season with RR in IPL 2018 and took 11 wickets – showing promise. He also took the team to win against MI with 11 ball 33 not out in a crunch game.
Krishnappa Gowtham's IPL career has been full of ups and downs. In the year 2018, he played the most 15 matches and scored 126 runs, with his highest score being 33* and his strike rate being 196.87. After this, in 2019, he scored 18 runs in 7 matches, while in 2020 he scored 42 runs while playing in just 2 matches, with 22* being his best score and an average of 42.00. In the year 2022, Gowtham got 4 matches but he could not score a single run. In 2023, he scored 61 runs in 7 matches, with 23 being his highest score and his strike rate being 164.86. In 2024, he played only one match but did not bat. Overall, Krishnappa Gowtham has scored 247 runs in 36 matches in the IPL so far, with his best score being 33*.

Maharaja Trophy matches shifted from Chinnaswamy Stadium to Mysuru

Big-ticket cricketing activities in Bengaluru suffered a jolt on Thursday as organisers of the Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20 (August 11 to 28) announced the shifting of all matches from M. Chinnaswamy Stadium to Mysuru. The decision comes two weeks after the Justice (Retd.) Michael D'Cunha Commission report — inquiring into the June 4 stampede outside the Stadium that caused 11 deaths during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL title-winning celebrations — declared Karnataka cricket's nerve-centre 'unsafe for mass gatherings' in its present state. With the investigation ongoing, and the case related to the tragedy being heard in the Karnataka High Court, it is understood that the Bengaluru city police denied permission for Maharaja Trophy games here. Calls to KSCA president Raghuram Bhat and joint-secretary Shavir Tarapore went unanswered. Sources said that the breach of fire-safety regulations that led to BESCOM cutting off power supply to the Stadium and the start of the monsoon session of the Karnataka legislature from August 11 were also cited as reasons. The development calls into question the conduct of the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup matches in the Garden City. Four fixtures, including the tournament-opener between India and Sri Lanka on September 30, a league-stage tie between India and Bangladesh on October 26 and one of two semifinals on October 30 are scheduled to be held here. Interestingly, the International Cricket Council announced the full schedule just over 10 days after the stampede. On July 11, organisers had announced that the Maharaja Trophy would be held behind closed doors even in Bengaluru. Mysuru too will have no fans in attendance. In fact, it is the first time in three years that the event will feature contests played outside the State capital, and only the third time in 12 seasons of Karnataka's flagship T20 competition — after 2015 and 2016 — that the entire tournament will be held outside Bengaluru. In 2023 and 2024, it had become a Bengaluru-only affair because of broadcasters' push and the presence of the state-of-the-art drainage system that comes in handy during the Southwest monsoon.

Women's World Cup at Chinnaswamy in doubt as ICC, BCCI fret; KSCA awaits government nod post RCB parade stampede: Report

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) have been left anxious about the schedule of the upcoming Women's ODI World Cup, with the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) yet to receive clearance from the state government to host matches at Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium. Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium The eight-team, 50-over tournament is scheduled to be held in India from September 30 to November 2, with the opening match between India and Sri Lanka set to take place in Bengaluru. The venue is also slated to host three other fixtures, including one of the semifinals. However, according to a report by Cricbuzz, uncertainty now clouds those matches, as the KSCA awaits official permission in the wake of the tragic stampede that occurred during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory parade in June. The incident had claimed 11 lives and left more than 50 injured. KSCA was more recently forced to shift the Maharaja Cup T20 tournament from the Chinnaswamy Stadium to Mysuru. "We've written to the State Government and are awaiting a response. It's not as if they've denied permission. If that were the policy, they wouldn't have allowed the Maharaja Cup in Mysuru. So, we're waiting," a KSCA official was quoted by the website. "There is some more time for this and we're going step by step." The Chinnaswamy Stadium is scheduled to stage four matches. Following the opener, the next game is between England and South Africa on October 3, India versus Bangladesh on October 26 and the second semifinal on October 30. Overall, the World Cup will be held in five cities, four of which are ACA Stadium in Guwahati, Holkar Stadium in Indore, ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam and R Premadasa Stadium (Colombo). The eight teams in the Women's World Cup include - Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand, Bangladesh and Pakistan, besides hosts India and Sri Lanka. Overall, 31 matches will be played - 28 league games, followed by two semifinals and the final.

'Idhar hi maar isko': Virat Kohli and KL Rahul's fired-up advice to young pacer goes viral

Virat Kohli and KL Rahul (Image credit: AFP) NEW DELHI: Indian pacer Harshit Rana recently opened up about a heated on-field exchange with Australian speedster Mitchell Starc during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he peppered Starc with bouncers before dismissing him for 26 — all while receiving spirited backing from senior pros Virat Kohli and KL Rahul . The duel ignited when Rana unleashed a barrage of short balls at Starc, one of which struck the Aussie on the helmet. Starc, also his Kolkata Knight Riders teammate in the IPL, responded with a trademark smirk and a warning: Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "Harshit, I bowl faster than you. I've got a long memory." Speaking on the BeerBiceps podcast, Rana shared his thoughts during that tense moment, admitting a mix of adrenaline and fear as he walked back to his mark. 'I bowled him a bouncer after a long time. One hit his helmet. When he sledged, I just laughed. But while walking back, I thought, 'Mar gaya, ab ye mujhe bouncer maarega!'' Poll Do you believe that the rivalry between India and Australia adds excitement to cricket? Absolutely! Not really, it's just another match. 'And then from behind, Virat bhai and KL bhai were shouting from the slips — 'Maarta reh, maarta reh, idhar hi maar isko!' I thought, 'Bhaiya aap toh bach jaoge, mere toh lagne wali hai!'' Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj press conference: India stars answer all questions As fate would have it, Starc did retaliate later, striking Rana on the helmet during the second Test. But the young Indian pacer took it in stride, chalking it up to the spirit of the contest. Rana's journey with the Indian team has had its ups and downs. While he has impressed in phases — including his stint in Australia — consistency at the international level has remained elusive. Most recently, he was part of the Test squad against England as a backup but was later released. Nevertheless, Rana remains an active contributor in white-ball formats and was a member of the Indian side that clinched the Champions Trophy.
