New York looks to finish out series against Boston in Game 5

Irish Examiner13-05-2025

Jalen Brunson had 39 points and 12 assists, and the New York Knicks moved a win away from their first Eastern Conference finals appearance in 25 years and pushed the defending champion Boston Celtics to the brink of elimination with a 121-113 victory in Game 4.
The Celtics will have to make just the 14th comeback from a 3-1 deficit in NBA history to extend their title reign and may have to do it without All-Star Jayson Tatum, who was carried off the court with a leg injury in the final minutes.
The series resumes Wednesday nighty in Boston with the Celtics needing to win to extend their NBA title reign.
After leading by at least 20 points in the first three games – but blowing the first two of them in Boston – the Celtics had another double-digit lead less than five minutes into this game.
They led 62-51 at halftime, but the Knicks played their starters the entire way in a desperate third quarter in which they outscored the Celtics 37-23 to set up a thrilling final period.
'I don't know,' Brunson said when asked about what had changed in the second half. 'Just find a way to make plays and get us going … I was just in the flow.' Tatum's three-point play tied it for the final time at 102-all before Anunoby hit a three-pointer and the Knicks later put it away for good with an 11-0 burst that made it 116-104.
Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns each added 23 points and OG Anunoby bounced back from two poor performances by scoring 20 for the Knicks, who can win the series on Wednesday night at Boston. If not, they would come back to Madison Square Garden to try to do it on Friday night.
'They played phenomenal, didn't quit, they kept fighting, that's what's most important whenever we get in a hole – you can't quit and we showed that,' Brunson said of his teammates.
Tatum scored 42 points, his high in these playoffs, before he was hurt when the Celtics turned the ball over and his leg gave out as he tried to lunge forward toward the loose ball. He immediately grabbed his leg and appeared to be in significant pain as he was treated by medical staff on court. Tatum was later seen being pushed to the locker room in a wheelchair with his hands over his face. The Celtics did not issue an official statement on the injury but Tatum will undergo an MRI.
'I mean, at this point, I'm concerned about Jayson,' Celtics centre Al Horford said. 'That's the most important to me ... The game stuff, we'll address it. But I'm just hoping that he's OK.'
The Knicks had taken control just before Tatum's injury in front of a delirious crowd of fans who haven't seen them play in the conference finals since they lost to Indiana in 2000.
NOT THIS TIME: THE Celtics' Jayson Tatum (left) intercepts a pass from New York's Karl-Anthony Towns in Monday's Game 4 of the Eastern Conference NBA Playoffs at Madison Square Garden. The Knicks lead the series 3-1.
Nobody has come from 3-1 down since Denver did so twice in 2020. It hasn't happened when a team had to win a true road game since Cleveland rallied past Golden State in the 2016 NBA finals.
Asked what the Knicks need to close out the series in Boston, Brunson was to the point. 'We've got to focus, that's a great team over there.'
In Monday's other game, Anthony Edwards scored 30 points for his second straight 30-point performance, Julius Randle had 31 points and the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Golden State Warriors 117-110 for a 3-1 lead in their Western Conference playoff series. Now, it's back home to Minneapolis for the Wolves with a chance to clinch the series in Game 5 on Wednesday. The Warriors will still be without Stephen Curry, who sat out his third game in a row and is scheduled to have his strained left hamstring re-evaluated that day.
Play-Offs - Eastern Conference: New York Knicks 121 Boston Celtics 113 (Knicks lead series 3-1); - Western Conference: Golden State Warriors 110 Minnesota Timberwolves 117 (Timberwolves lead series 3-1).

Athlete diagnosed with brain tumour after suffering seizure during sleep

An athlete who was diagnosed with a brian tumor after he suffered a seizure in his sleep is learning to walk again - and even aspires to be the world's best pickleball player. Nicholas Wade was fortunate his wife, Beah Wade, 26, is a nurse and quickly called an ambulance after her beloved husband experienced a seizure in the middle of the night. After he awoke in hospital, the 27-year-old had to pinch himself to check that he wasn't dreaming. Doctors then sent him for an MRI scan to see what had caused the seizure, The Mirror reports. "I felt the fittest I have ever felt in my whole life. I was training for a tournament that week. I had zero symptoms. I went to sleep one night and had a seizure in my sleep," Nicholas shared. "First of all, I didn't think it was real. I had to check myself to make sure it was real and I wasn't dreaming. It then started hitting me that if I had a seizure in my sleep, something was seriously wrong. I was really scared in that moment - that was the first time I had been in hospital for anything." Sadly, the MRI revealed there was a mass on his brain, which medics diagnosed as a brain tumor. Over the following months, further biopsies confirmed this was a benign glioneuronal tumour - a group of rare brain tumours that contain a mixture of both nerve cells and glial cells. While doctors said this had been present since birth, Nicholas promptly needed an operation to remove it. "One of the hardest parts was after the operation when I waited for the biopsy results," he said. "It must have taken six months for them to confirm what type of tumour I had. Luckily, my operation was successful, and doctors were able to remove the entire tumour. I don't require any further treatment, which was a relief." Due to the location of the tumour on his right frontal lobe, Nicholas spent one month relearning how to walk, shower, and feed himself again. He said his mental health suffered as a result, but he is now back on the court, aiming to become the world's best pickleball player. Nicholas continued: "The biggest thing for me was my mental health. The tumour shifted who I was as a person. I knew who I was before the surgery, but after it, I lost myself. "I was unable to shower myself, feed myself, or stand up for a while after the surgery. I would start by standing on my feet for a second, then a few seconds, gradually until I could stand for a minute. "There's a huge stigma with brain tumours that you won't be able to achieve great things after surgery. I'm here to change that stigma, to be a beacon of hope and an inspiration, showing that after a brain tumour, I can still achieve anything I want and chase my dreams." In light of Nicholas' experience, Piers Townley, Celebrity Manager at The Brain Tumour Charity, said: "We're delighted to have Nicholas' support as one of our High Profile Influencers, a vital awareness role for the work we do. Excellent Bennedict delivers off bench for Indiana in game three of NBA finals

BENNEDICT MATHURIN'S GAME-changing performance in game three of the NBA Finals felt like a long time coming, but the 22-year-old Canadian made sure he was ready when the opportunity arrived. Mathurin came off the bench to score 27 points in Indiana's 116-107 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday, which gave the Pacers a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven championship series. In 22:24 minutes on court through the second and fourth quarters, Mathurin was a brutally efficient nine-of 12 from the field, making two of his three three-point attempts and seven of eight free-throws, adding in four rebounds an assist and a blocked shot for good measure. 'Just staying ready,' Mathurin said. 'Whenever my number is called, go into the game and do the right things and try to help my team win — that's the whole mindset.' Advertisement Mathurin is playing in the playoffs for the first time, after watching the Pacers' run to the Eastern Conference finals from the bench in the wake of season-ending surgery in March of 2024. Even then, the Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said, the 22-year-old Canadian was looking ahead. 'He was with the team. He just wasn't playing,' Carlisle recalled. 'He took a lot of notes, a lot of mental notes, and he may have written some things down. 'I do know that after he sustained the injury, it was either in February or early March, you can order these calendars that start on a specific day and then they count days. 'So there was a calendar sitting in our training room and every day he would come in and take one off, take one off. He was counting the days down to being cleared sometime in August and then be able to begin training camp, begin five-on-five with our guys in September and then be in training camp, really, with his eyes firmly set on an opportunity in the playoffs. 'So he's putting a lot of work to be ready for these moments, and tonight he was an absolute major factor.' Mathurin said he was 'fortunate to learn a lot' in what was an unfortunate situation last year but he admitted that it wasn't easy. Playing in the Finals, in front of the intense fans in Indianapolis, 'is a dream' but one he doesn't want to get caught up in. 'I'm not trying to live in my dream,' he said. 'I'm trying to live in the present and make sure the dream ends well, which means winning next game and winning a championship.' – © AFP 2025

Vinicius Júnior goal sends Brazil to 2026 World Cup, delighting fans in Ancelotti's home debut

A goal by Vinicius Júnior secured Brazil a place in the 2026 World Cup, quite a momentous home debut for Carlo Ancelotti as head coach. The once prolific duo at Real Madrid helped Brazil to a 1-0 win over Paraguay at Sao Paulo. Ecuador secured its place at next year's global tournament later on Tuesday with a 0-0 draw at Peru. Defending champions Argentina, held to a 1-1 draw by Colombia, had already qualified and are assured of finishing on top of South American qualifying. Ecuador and Brazil each have 25 points in the standings, but the Ecuadorians are in second spot based on victories. The two nations are 10 points behind Argentina but, crucially, more than six points clear of the seventh-place team with two games remaining in the qualifying campaign. The top six teams in South America earn direct entries to the 48-team World Cup. Chile will miss a third consecutive World Cup after losing 2-0 at Bolivia to remain last in 10-nation round-robin competition, a result that cost head coach Ricardo Gareca his job. Uruguay beat Venezuela at home 2-0, with goals from Rodrigo Aguirre and Giorgian de Arrascaeta, and edged closer to one of the direct spots with 24 points. Venezuela, with 18, are one ahead of Bolivia in the contest for seventh place that grants an intercontinental playoff berth. Lionel Messi had a quiet night in Argentina's draw with Colombia in Buenos Aires. Luis Díaz opened the scoring for the visitors in the 24th minute. Enzo Fernandez was sent off in the 70th minute to the disappointment of more than 80,000 fans at the Monumental de Nunez Stadium. But Julián Alvarez scored the equalizer in the 81st with a low, crossed shot. Madrid-Sao Paulo Ancelotti received some frustration from fans after Thursday's 0-0 draw with Ecuador, as his team focused on defending the entire match. The Italian coach, who turned 66 Tuesday, promised changes to make his team more aggressive at the NeoQuimica Arena. He was welcomed by 46,000 fans, including NBA star Gianni Antetokounmpo, who displayed a tifo in yellow and green that read 'Parabens, Carleto' (Happy birthday, Carleto in Portuguese). Gabriel Martinelli replaced midfielder Gerson and was one of the best players of the encounter. Raphinha returned after suspension and created many problems for Paraguay's defense. And Vinicius Júnior was often seen as a targetman, sharing the duties with Matheus Cunha. A mistake by Paraguay's defense, a low cross by Cunha and a gentle touch by Brazil's new No. 10 produced the only goal of the match. 'It is for you,' the striker told the coach as he celebrated. Despite the low score, the hosts were much more aggressive than in most of its games in this World Cup qualifying campaign. 'We needed to win here for our people. Now we have more time to work, see what we can improve,' Vinicius said after the match. He won't play Brazil's next game in qualifying against Chile due to suspension. 'We need to celebrate this. After September it is all about the World Cup.' After the final whistle, a clip of Ancelotti's first days on the job was shown in big screens around the stadium. A raucous celebration erupted again, as if the Italian coach had brought new life to a team that only three months ago appeared lost and doomed. He said the team was balanced despite having four strikers. He also said that Cunha's role, as a playmaker, is the one he figures will be Neymar's if the veteran fully recovers his fitness. 'It's no problem to play with three or four up front. We need 10 players to run, to sacrifice,' Ancelotti said. 'Rodrygo did this many times, I know him well. And Neymar will also do it.' Golden generation gone Chile's golden generation won two Copa America titles — in 2015 and '16 — but are out of contention for next year's expanded 48-team tournament. 'Sad, I am feeling bad. Never lived something like this. We have to ask people to forgive us,' veteran Chile striker Alexis Sánchez said. 'We have to keep working. There's change already, the golden generation is buried, I am the only one left.' Bolivia scored first via Miguel Terceros in the fifth minute and added a second in the 90th with Enzo Monteiro at the 4,150-meter high El Alto Stadium, outside La Paz. Gareca, the 67-year-old Argentinian coach who took Peru to the 2018 World Cup, told a post-game news conference he was leaving the team after a 17-match stretch that included four wins, four draws and nine losses. Final rounds The South American qualifying tournament will finish in September. Uruguay and Paraguay each need one point to secure their direct spots. The Uruguayans will face Peru and Chile. The Paraguayans will take on Ecuador and Peru. Colombia, in sixth place with 22 points, will play for its World Cup future against Bolivia and Venezuela. Bolivia will seek its first chance to play at the World Cup since 1994 against the Colombians and then Brazil. Venezuela's rivals will be Argentina and Colombia. AP
