Two MTV VMA nominations for Tyla
The 23-year-old singer received nods in the categories of Best Afrobeats and Best Choreography for her single Push 2 Start.
The nominations mark a continued rise for the Johannesburg-born singer who gained international attention in 2023 with her breakout hit Water.
Tyla made history last year as one of the first African artist to win a VMA and her inclusion in this year's line-up positions her among the continent's most successful contemporary music exports.
The Best Afrobeats category includes high-profile nominees such as Asake, Burna Boy, Rema, Tems and Wizkid. Tyla is the only South African artist in the category.
Her nomination for Best Choreography highlights the visual direction of Litchi Hov for Push 2 Start, which has attracted more than 100-million views across platforms and sparked a viral dance trend globally.
The VMAs will take place on September 7 at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, for the second year in a row. This year's ceremony introduces new fan-voted categories including Best Pop Artist and Best Country, while retaining global genre-specific categories such as Best K-Pop, Best Latin, and Best Afrobeats.
Tyla, born Tyla Laura Seethal, has been credited with helping to popularise Amapiano-influenced pop music beyond African borders. She has just been featured on Variety's Power of Young Hollywood as the industry magazine's cover star.
Lady Gaga leads the pack with a total of 12 VMA nominations, while Bruno Mars follows closely with 11 nods and Kendrick Lamar with 10.
The VMAs will be broadcast in the early morning hours of September 8 on MTV Africa.

Kim Jayde shares how to experience Cannes on a budget
South African media personality and fashion enthusiast Kim Jayde has returned from the prestigious Cannes International Festival of Creativity. She has returned with some fresh insider's guide for South Africans keen to explore the allure of the French Riviera. Partnering with Air France, she shares her top tips to make your trip to Cannes unforgettable. Kim praises Air France as the perfect start to any French adventure. 'The moment you step onto an Air France flight, you experience French hospitality and culture,' she says. Every Business Class passenger is welcomed with a glass of champagne, and even economy passengers are treated to champagne served on board. 'It's a luxurious touch that sets the tone for the journey,' explains Kim. Onboard, she enjoyed classic French documentaries alongside fine red wine and steak, adding to the authentic experience. For accommodation, Kim recommends venturing just 15 minutes outside Cannes to the charming town of Antibes, according to Urban Lifestyle SA. 'It offers beautiful, more affordable options like two-bedroom Airbnbs,' she says. This option is perfect for travellers on a budget wanting to mingle with the C-suite elite visiting Cannes. Given that €1 roughly converts to about R 20, she notes that a train ticket from Antibes to Cannes costs approximately R 140. This is compared to Uber rides ranging between R 520 and R 980. 'Europe's trains are efficient, clean, and air-conditioned, making them a smart choice to navigate,' she advises. Food lovers should not miss the local boulangeries. 'Carry cash for the family-owned bakeries where fresh bread, cheese and cold meats are perfected by the French,' Kim says. She highlights Banana Blue, a quaint restaurant hidden from the main beach strip, famous for its fresh pizza and pasta. 'The French know how to enjoy life, no stress, no rush,' she adds. Beach days in Cannes are a must, with La Plage's Mediterranean waters warming to a pleasant 23°C in summer. Kim suggests visiting the beach around 4 pm when it's cooler, then enjoying sundowners and dinner at nearby cafés as the sun sets as late as 9 pm. When packing, Kim encourages lightweight, breathable fabrics. 'Leave your suits and jeans behind. Think cool linens, cotton shirts, flowy dresses and shorts,' she advises. On the language front, she stresses the importance of polite French greetings. 'Try to greet people in French, and they appreciate the effort,' she says, noting many locals will respond with a smile and helpfully switch to English or suggest Google Translate. Reflecting on her trip, Kim jokes, 'This was my first visit to France, and I fell in love with Cannes. From the food and energy to the safety and the lack of load-shedding or water cuts!' She has already marked her calendar for a 2026 return. Kim concludes, 'Cannes is a magical destination, definitely add it to your bucket list.' Sarah Michelle Gellar returns as Buffy in new reboot
Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Kiera Armstrong are powering up for the highly anticipated Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot. Gellar, reprising her iconic role as Buffy Summers, posted a video on social media showing her and Armstrong training hard. Gellar captioned her post with a playful line: 'Warrior 1 and 2. We don't sweat … we sparkle.' This glimpse behind the scenes suggests the reboot is progressing well. Just weeks earlier, she also shared a photo from the pilot's first read-through, gathering not only Armstrong but a cast of talented newcomers, according to Collider. The newcomers included Jack Cutmore-Scott ( Frasier ), Sarah Bock ( Severance ), Daniel Di Tomasso ( CSI: Vegas ), and Ava Jean ( Law & Order: SVU ). Faly Rakotohavana ( Unprisoned ), and Kingston Vernes ( So Cold the River ), also join the cast. The reboot has heavyweight creative talent behind it. Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao is helming the pilot episode. The storyline comes from Pokerface showrunners Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, lending fresh voices to the Buffy universe. Meanwhile, Gellar is also taking on the role of executive producer, signalling her deep commitment to honouring the original while pushing the story forward. For South African viewers, the return of Buffy carries more meaning than nostalgia. Gellar expressed how the show's themes of friendship and chosen family resonate strongly today, especially amid global and social divisions. She said, 'Buffy is still hitting people who are watching it for the first time, and they're seeing themselves, their friends, and they're finding their chosen family. And I think more than ever right now, as we get more and more divided, we need that chosen family.' She hopes to offer a new generation comfort and connection through the reboot. The original series ended over two decades ago, but Buffy's legacy lives on strongly. Since stepping back from Hollywood to focus on family, Gellar seemed unlikely to return. However, the passion behind the new project changed her mind. South African fans, who have long embraced Buffy's blend of supernatural adventure and teenage drama, can look forward to a series that honours its roots. However, the show will also usher in fresh stories and diverse characters suitable for today's world. With a Hulu release on the horizon and such strong creative forces at play, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is ready to cast its spell over a new generation. This reboot promises to be a beacon of hope and empowerment, a relevant and exciting revival for South African fans and the global Buffyverse alike.
