For low-income households, retirement planning often feels like a distant luxury, and the pathways to financial empowerment can seem inaccessible. In this candid Forbes Q&A, I speak to Thasunda Brown Duckett, President and CEO of TIAA and one of just two Black women to helm a Fortune 500 company currently, to discuss the systemic barriers that keep millions from building a secure future and to share actionable strategies for closing the retirement gap. Our conversation offers insights and practical advice for individuals, organizations, and policymakers committed to making retirement security a reality for all Americans.
Q: In my work with low-income families through the Magnolia Mother's Trust, I often hear that retirement planning feels like a luxury they can't afford. How do we change this mindset and make retirement security accessible for all income levels?
A: When we talk about retirement security for low-income families, particularly those living in poverty, we have to acknowledge a fundamental challenge: our retirement system is built around earned income and workplace benefits. The majority of low-income Americans lack access to workplace retirement plans. So this isn't just about saving more — it's about addressing systemic barriers. We need innovative policy solutions that help all Americans build financial security, whether through expanded access to retirement plans for small businesses, state-sponsored programs or other approaches that recognize different economic realities.
Q: Financial know-how has traditionally been a privilege of those who are in higher income brackets. From your perspective, what role should financial education play in closing economic gaps, and how early should it start?"
A: Financial education isn't just for those with wealth — today's technology helps make it more accessible to everyone. What matters is starting early with practical moments: discussing grocery prices with children or opening their first savings account, which research shows correlates with college attendance. 29 states now require financial education for graduation. But education alone isn't enough. We also need policies that make saving easier and more accessible.
Q: When I speak with young people, especially those just graduating college, retirement often feels too far away to prioritize. You've spoken about the power of compounding — can you break down why starting to save early is so crucial, even if it's just a small amount?
A: Your first paycheck is your first opportunity to invest in your future self. I tell young people one word they need to know: compounding. When you start that first job, you're making more than you did before — so start saving before you get used to spending that money. And if you are working at a company that offers a retirement match, take full advantage. Because otherwise, that's free money you're leaving on the table.
Q: What are the biggest challenges and opportunities that your clients face in the current economic climate, especially regarding inflation and retirement security?
A: Today's economic headwinds — from inflation to market volatility — create real challenges for retirement savers. But here's what's most important and where I see the opportunity for our clients: stay the course with your retirement contributions and ensure part of your allocation includes protection through guaranteed lifetime income. This is a good time to meet with your financial advisor, review your portfolio, and reaffirm your long-term strategy. Because while market volatility isn't new — it's how you respond that matters. It's important to maintain a long-term perspective and stay invested.
Q: What specific strategies is TIAA using to promote financial inclusion and close the wealth gap, particularly for underserved communities?
A: Let me share what we're doing to make retirement security accessible to everyone. With 57 million Americans lacking access to workplace retirement plans, we're advocating for policies that help more employers offer these benefits. We're working to make saving automatic through features like auto-enrollment, which can increase participation rates from 60% to over 90%. And crucially, we're ensuring guaranteed lifetime income is available in retirement plans. Because this isn't just about saving — it's about making sure people can retire with dignity and not outlive their savings.

Q: As a champion of financial empowerment, what initiatives are you most proud of, and what impact have you seen so far?
A: What I'm most proud of is seeing the retirement security movement gain real momentum at scale, with unprecedented bipartisan support and public-private partnerships driving change. That's why we launched our Retirement Bill of Rights initiative — because solving the retirement crisis requires all of us working together. We're seeing concrete progress: more employers offering workplace plans, increased adoption of auto-enrollment features, and growing recognition that guaranteed lifetime income is essential. This isn't about individual programs — it's about transforming the retirement system to work for all Americans.
Q: Can you share actionable advice for organizations seeking to build more equitable and inclusive cultures?
A: Building inclusive organizations isn't just about initiatives — it's about creating environments where people can thrive long-term. Research shows companies with inclusive cultures see higher retention rates and stronger employee engagement. When people feel they can bring their authentic selves to work and share diverse perspectives, they're more likely to stay, grow, and build financial security. That's why at TIAA our Business Resource Groups — which are employee networks organized around shared identities or experiences — are so powerful. They're not just support systems; they foster intellectual curiosity and innovation while creating pathways for career growth and long-term success.
Q: How did your upbringing and early career experiences influence your leadership style and vision?
A: Growing up, my family was long on love but short on money. My parents taught me grit and perseverance — showing me that obstacles are opportunities to grow stronger. But what truly shaped my leadership style was seeing my parents and our community working incredibly hard, sometimes still coming up short. That taught me real empathy — not the soft kind, but the kind that drives you to truly see people, connect with their potential, and fight on their behalf. For me, leadership isn't just about personal success — it's about creating connections that help others unlock their own potential.
Q: What does 'human capital transformation' mean to you, and how is TIAA preparing for the future of work?
A: Human capital transformation means creating a workplace ready for tomorrow's opportunities. It's about being at the forefront of meeting our clients' needs while taking our culture forward. A: Board service, from public companies to startups to nonprofits, fuels my intellectual curiosity about how different people and organizations solve complex challenges. I'm constantly learning from diverse thinkers and different approaches to problem-solving. These varied perspectives and conversations strengthen my leadership muscle daily, depositing new insights into my skill set that make me a better CEO at TIAA.
Q: How do you advise individuals who do not have a culture of planning for retirement to get started? How can you make planning and saving for the future seem possible when you barely get by financially?
A: When you're living paycheck to paycheck, the message 'just save more' isn't helpful. Money is emotional, and retirement planning can feel overwhelming when you're focused on getting by today. But let's take the judgment out of it and just get started. Maybe it's asking your HR department about retirement benefits you might not know about. Maybe it's learning about budgeting from free online resources. Maybe it's setting up a small automatic transfer each payday. Start where you are — even small amounts matter. Small steps today can create meaningful security tomorrow. The key is taking that first step.
Q: I did a TED Talk about redefining wealth to come up with a more inclusive version that applies to communities often left out of the conversation. So I'd like to ask you, how do you define wealth?
A: Wealth isn't just about money or hitting a certain number. True wealth is about joy — enriching your life in meaningful ways. It's about security — having confidence in your future. Most importantly, it's about legacy — not just the financial assets you pass on, but the knowledge you've accumulated, the lessons you've learned, and how you use them to impact others. Just like financial wealth requires both accumulation and distribution, life's wealth comes from gathering experiences and sharing them forward.

But you may be bleeding cash without even realizing it. A recent CNET study found that the average US consumer spends around $200 a year on subscriptions they aren't using. I've done it myself. It's all too easy to sign up for a free trial or service and forget about it. Subscription companies are happy to take your money each month, whether or not you're actually using the service. And the recent blockage of the FTC's "Click to Cancel" rule could make it harder to cancel unwanted subscriptions. The good news is that there are apps that can help you find the subscriptions you're wasting money on and cancel them for you. I tested Rocket Money to see what it could do for me, and it helped me cut $400 worth of subscriptions in just 15 minutes. Here's how it works. Rocket Money Not only can it help you rein in your spending, but Rocket Money can also help you find and cancel unwanted subscriptions. Details CNET editors choice winner for best budgeting app See at Rocket Money Rocket Money saved me more than $400 in 15 minutes Rocket Money is a budgeting app that monitors your income and expenses, helps you set savings goals and tracks your subscriptions in one place, whether you use the free or paid version. It's also my pick for the best Mint replacement app and won CNET's Editors' Choice award. Rocket Money's paid version, which costs $6 to $12 a month, can also find and cancel some subscriptions for you. You can try this service by navigating to the Recurring tab on the app menu. You'll see subscriptions coming due in the next seven days, ones coming due later and how much you spend on these subscriptions in a year. The first thing I noticed was that my subscription to HGTV Magazine, which costs $50 for a year, was up for renewal in four days. Given my enormous pile of unread back issues, canceling this subscription was a no-brainer. Rocket Money gave me two options: The app could cancel this subscription for me or I could call the number they provided to cancel it myself. I chose to have them do it for me. The app asked for some basic information, including my name, billing address and the reason I wanted to cancel, then confirmed that it was working on it. The process was fairly painless but I have one complaint. I didn't know until after I'd submitted my cancellation request that it could take two to seven days for Rocket Money to complete the cancellation -- I found out from the pop-up confirmation I received after submitting. Fortunately, I was able to respond quickly to the email confirmation Rocket sent me and I received a response within minutes from a customer support rep who said they'd fast-track my cancellation. The next business day, my subscription was canceled. I was hooked. What else was I spending money on without realizing it? I reviewed my other subscriptions and identified a handful I no longer needed: HP Instant Ink: $4.34 per month (for a printer I don't even have anymore) $4.34 per month (for a printer I don't even have anymore) New York Times Digital: $4 per month (the number of free articles I get is usually enough for me) $4 per month (the number of free articles I get is usually enough for me) Wall Street Journal: $4 per month (same as above) $4 per month (same as above) Pandora: $10 per month (a recent switch to Amazon Prime Unlimited made this service unnecessary) $10 per month (a recent switch to Amazon Prime Unlimited made this service unnecessary) Spotify: $10 per month (same as above) I'll admit I barely noticed these small amounts when they hit my bank account each month. I'd grouped them under "Miscellaneous" in my budget and never really thought about them because that category tended to stay within my spending goals. But viewing them all grouped together, it was easy to see how quickly they could drain my budget. By canceling these subscriptions, I saved myself $32.32 per month going forward, for a total annual savings of $387.84. Add that to the savings on my HGTV Magazine subscription and that's an extra $437.81 in my pocket annually. Better yet, even though I'd only installed the app a few months earlier, Rocket Money pulled in subscriptions from years past, allowing me to catch ones that were coming due even though I hadn't paid for them since installing the app. In total, reviewing my subscriptions and having Rocket Money cancel six of them took me about 15 minutes. Not bad to get more than $400 in savings. Rocket Money's free version can still help you cut subscription costs Rocket Money's free version only shows subscriptions -- it won't cancel them for you. To access the cancellation service, you'll need the paid version, which costs $6 to $12 per month. You choose your amount, and you'll enjoy the same features regardless of how much you pay. If you don't want to pay extra for the convenience of having Rocket cancel your subscriptions for you, you could just as easily use the free version to identify your subscriptions and then cancel them yourself. You can also try using Rocket's bill negotiation service, which can help lower your monthly costs, but you'll pay 35% to 60% of your first year's savings if it's able to save you money. How to save on subscriptions without Rocket Money I used Rocket Money to trim my subscription costs because it's the budgeting app I regularly use anyway. I'd rather save a few minutes, especially if it doesn't cost me anything extra. But you can always cancel your subscriptions yourself by calling a customer service line or logging into your online account. These tips can also help you maximize your savings: Note your renewal dates. Whenever you sign up for a new service, note when it's due to renew. Then, set a reminder on your calendar for the week before so you can decide if it's worth renewing and cancel if not. If you sign up for a free trial, use a virtual card to make canceling a breeze. Review your budget regularly. Going over your budget weekly can help you spot subscription charges that have already hit your account and cancel them before they cost you more. But don't just take a cursory glance. Look at each transaction, even the minor ones. I was keeping a general eye on my spending, but I wasn't always doing it line by line to evaluate if each expense was truly worth it. Rotate your streaming services. You can only watch so much content in a month. One of the easiest ways I've found to keep my subscription costs down is to only subscribe to one streaming service at a time. For example, when one of the shows I love dropped its new season on Netflix, I canceled my Hulu and signed up for a month of Netflix. I watched everything that interested me on Netflix before the month was up, then I canceled it and moved on to another service. Take advantage of complimentary subscriptions. Some subscriptions give you free access to other services. For instance, Walmart Plus members get a free Paramount Plus subscription. Amazon Prime membership comes with perks like a free Amazon Music subscription and a free year of Grubhub Plus. Take a look at your existing subscriptions to see if they offer any free perks you can take advantage of. Visit your local library. Many library systems offer free access to newspapers, magazines and movies and TV series on DVD. Check out your local library to see what you can enjoy for free.

While it might sound surprising, it's possible to struggle and have little wealth even if you make a decent salary, control your expenses and don't rack up credit card debt. Buying a home is often more appealing than renting since each monthly mortgage payment helps you build equity. While Singh encouraged homeownership, he cautioned against viewing your property as an investment, partly due to how banks amortize the loans. 'They do something called front-loading mortgages, which means in the beginning, the majority of your mortgage payment is going directly into your banker's pocket with interest, and a little bit is going to actually build equity in your house,' Singh explained. He also explained that homes are like liabilities because you'll always have ongoing costs, like taxes, insurance and maintenance, even after the final mortgage payment. Singh suggested carefully considering all the upfront and ongoing costs before buying a home and not relying on the property as your only investment for building wealth. Other income sources will be especially important during retirement. While a job provides you with money for your needs, it's unlikely that your work-related income alone will make you rich. Singh explained employees are really in the business of helping companies and their shareholders become wealthier. Plus, there's the fact that you need to put the time and effort into working to get your paycheck. Singh said that investing is a better path to becoming wealthy than relying on your salary, as you'll be able to benefit from companies' profits as a shareholder. Whether you receive dividends, interest or gains, that passive income won't require working like your job. This makes growing your wealth more sustainable. If your budget leaves little to invest, you might believe it's pointless or impossible to get started. But Singh explained that even $100 monthly contributions could make you a millionaire if you start early, earn a 10% return and maintain the habit for around 46 years. He recommended starting to contribute whatever you can, even if that means a few dollars per day. While your progress may be slow at first, stick with the habit, keep your wealth goal in mind, and remember you can adjust your strategy as your financial situation changes. 'As you earn more money, invest more money and keep investing your money when markets go down and over the long term,' Singh said. 'What we have seen is that this is a proven way to become wealthy.' Getting advice from your bank can seem like common sense if you're buying an expensive asset like a car or house. However, you shouldn't consider the banker to be a reliable financial advisor who will recommend the best money moves for your situation. Singh explained that bankers often get commissions, so they might suggest that you borrow more for something than you should. While they'd benefit from a bigger commission check, you may be stuck with an unaffordable loan payment or regret your purchase. So, watching out for yourself is crucial. That's why Singh recommended a system that lets you know how much you should be spending on all monthly expenses alongside your savings and investing goals. He recommended setting your spending limit to 75% of your income, allocating 10% to savings and investing 15%. According to Fidelity Investments, the average 401(k) balance in the first quarter of 2025 was $127,100. That was far below the $1.26 million that Americans participating in Northwestern Mutual's Planning & Progress Study said they'd need for a comfortable retirement. Singh explained that a 401(k) plan is important but is just one of the retirement planning tools to have. You should also consider additional options, such as IRAs, health savings accounts and regular brokerage accounts. Different tax rules and potential contribution limits apply to different accounts, so finding a financial advisor who can help with retirement planning is a wise move.
