Cision Canada10-06-2025
RICHMOND HILL, ON, June 10, 2025 /CNW/ - Staples Canada announces the release of its 2024 Community Impact and Sustainability Report, highlighting its ongoing dedication to making a positive difference through its three core pillars: environment, equity and education. Over the past 20 years, Staples' focus on corporate citizenship has included ambitious recycling and sustainability goals, supporting equity programs in communities across Canada, and providing educational resources to students in need.
"At Staples Canada, our commitment to community impact extends beyond promises – it's a continuous effort to create meaningful change in the communities we serve through our focus on environmental sustainability, equity, and education," said Rachel Huckle, CEO, Staples Canada. "We're proud to have achieved three of our seven sustainability goals ahead of target, of raising more than $2.3 million for our Even The Odds initiative for health equity in our country, and for providing more than $900,000 in support to students through our annual School Supply Drive program. These milestones reflect our dedication to empowering Canadians and building stronger communities."
Environment: Solutions That Will Never Go to Waste
As part of its ongoing environmental efforts, Staples outlined its Goals for a Greener Future in 2020, a set of bold sustainability targets to achieve by 2025. The report highlights remarkable progress, including:
10.1 million writing instruments recycled: As Canada's sole provider of writing instrument recycling, in partnership with TerraCycle, since 2012, Staples has successfully diverted more than 10 million writing instruments from landfills, surpassing its 2025 goal of 8 million units.
938,000 kilograms of used batteries recycled: Through its partnership with Call2Recycle, Staples has exceeded its goal of 750,000 kilograms, earning the 2024 Leader in Sustainability Award for the fifth consecutive year.
8 million units of ink and toner cartridges recycled: Staples partners with HP and eCycle solutions to recycle ink and toner cartridges, achieving 94% of its goal to recycle 8.5 million units by 2025.
10.6 million tonnes of electronics recycled: In partnership with eCycle Solutions, Staples has diverted 10.6 million tonnes of electronics from landfills, exceeding 78% of its goal of 13.5 million tonnes by 2025.
Reducing Carbon Emissions with Renewable Energy, EV Fleet and Tree Planting
Staples is committed to reducing carbon emissions through key initiatives, including powering its facilities with 100% clean, renewable electricity from Bullfrog Power, making Staples the top retailer for Bullfrog Power in Canada. In 2024, its Electric Vehicle fleet helped reduce CO 2 equivalents by more than 3,674 kilograms, with plans to expand. Staples also celebrated its 17-year partnership with Tree Canada and has planted nearly 250,000 trees, supporting community greening projects across the country.
Supporting Canadians with Free Recycling Solutions
Staples is dedicated to making an impact in communities across the country, offering more than 2,500 eco-friendly products in-store and online, free in-store recycling programs, and renewable energy solutions powering its stores and supply chain operations. Its 298 store locations across Canada offer a variety of free recycling solutions for customers, which include: Ink and Toner Recycling, Electronics Recycling, Writing Instrument Recycling, Battery Recycling, and Secure Shredding Services, as well as Nespresso Pod Recycling at select locations.
Equity: Making the Future Fair for Everyone
In 2024, Staples' Even The Odds partnership with MAP, Canada's largest health equity research centre, raised more than $2.3 million to help fund research and community solutions across Canada. This initiative addresses three key areas:
Ending Chronic Homelessness: The Navigator Program helps unhoused patients recover after hospitalization by connecting them with healthcare and social services.
Creating Healthy Starts for Kids: The APPLE Schools program helps elementary students in underserved communities develop healthy habits that last a lifetime.
Improving Access to Care and Disease Prevention: Programs like Our Healthbox provide free health supplies to communities in the Maritimes, and the Healthy Food Prescription program supports low-income patients living with diabetes.
Education: Unlocking Potential through Learning
Staples raised more than $900,000 through its annual School Supply Drive to support students across Canda. Working with partners United Way/Centraide and Kiwanis Club, this initiative helps eliminate barriers to education for children in Canada. The company also invested in educational opportunities for its associates through programs like Lead Forward leadership development, online learning resources, and its Associate Scholarship Awards, which granted 23 academic scholarships valued at $1,000 each to associates and their families in 2024.

Opinion: It's time to put Canada back on the investment map

Article content In national terms, it takes investment to generate economic growth. But in recent years, Canada's economic policy has lost sight of that basic principle. Article content Article content A major reason for Canada's stalled economic growth and declining standard of living over the past decade is that business investment — a critical driver of growth — has been weak, suffering under a federal policy environment that has ranged from unhelpful to counterproductive. The result is a country struggling to compete, attract capital and generate the kind of prosperity Canadians expect and deserve. Article content Article content When businesses look for opportunities to grow and invest, Canada has not been a clear choice for some time and the reasons aren't mysterious. Investors want to know that when they make a bet on a country, that bet won't be derailed by unpredictable policy shifts, misguided regulatory frameworks or political interference. Article content Article content If we want to reverse this trend, we must act — and quickly. At a time of global uncertainty and geopolitical turmoil, countries are seeking reliable trading partners and investors are looking for stable, competitive environments. Canada can offer both. Article content According to recent polling, 80 per cent of Canadians supported growing investment in Canada by focusing on competitiveness. With bold leadership, we can restore confidence, attract investment and build a stronger, more prosperous future for all Canadians. Article content That starts with a national commitment to positioning Canada not just as a top choice for business but the top choice. Article content Canadians' famous modesty can sometimes work against us. We are often reluctant to say we want to be the 'first' or the 'best,' but we must. We need to send a clear message to the world: Canada is refocused on competitiveness and committed to growth. This message must be reinforced consistently, on global stages, in major speeches and in every international engagement. Article content But rhetoric alone won't get us there. We must back it up with action. We need to eliminate the friction that makes doing business here harder than it should be. That includes eliminating barriers to labour and trade between provinces, a long-standing Canadian problem that we've tolerated for too long. Article content We also need levels of government to play to their strengths and, frankly, stay in their lanes. Canada's constitution gives provinces jurisdiction over many key areas that affect investment — from natural resource development to permitting and electricity generation. To successfully build business and investor confidence, the federal government must respect this. Article content Playing to our strengths also applies to how we manage natural resources. Canada has a generational opportunity to meet growing global demand for responsibly produced energy, minerals and food. But to seize it, we need a policy environment that enables — rather than obstructs — investment. Article content This will also require a better process for Indigenous consultation, one that ensures both partnership and consistency. Article content And we must take a sharper, more targeted approach to immigration. Canada has the potential to attract the world's best and brightest, but we must prioritize pathways that match our economic needs and select those with the skills and capabilities to meet those needs and be set up for a long-term trajectory of success. Seven in 10 Canadians support this market-driven economic approach to immigration. Article content Finally, we can't talk about investment without talking about infrastructure. Moving Canadian goods to global markets efficiently is essential to our competitiveness. That means faster approvals and more significant and expansive investments in trade infrastructure — starting now. Article content None of this requires reinvention. These are pragmatic, achievable steps, ones we outline in a new report, From Barriers to Breakthroughs, that can strengthen Canada's economic foundation and restore our competitiveness on the world stage.

Fifty-nine per cent of new Canadians say better access to credit would improve their living experience, finds TD Français

Survey finds 79% new Canadians who have applied for credit say it's challenging to build a credit history here TORONTO, Aug. 12, 2025 /CNW/ - As Canadians continue to navigate evolving economic realities, a new TD survey shows that newcomers who arrived in Canada within the last five years face challenges when it comes to the country's credit system. Among new Canadians surveyed who have applied for credit, three in five (59 per cent) agree they would have a more positive living experience in Canada if they had better access to credit and 79 per cent say it is difficult for newcomers to start building a credit history. Although these challenges are widely reported across the new Canadian community, it does not appear they are due to lack of understanding around the need for credit. According to the survey, 68 per cent of new Canadians say they were familiar with credit scores before arriving and 92 per cent believed it would be important to build a credit history here. When asked what types of credit new Canadians have applied for, the top three were credit cards (92 per cent), car loans (18 per cent) and mortgages (13 per cent) according to consumers surveyed. "For newcomers beginning their lives in Canada, getting off to a strong financial start can be incredibly challenging without access to the credit they need," said Muhammad Kara, Associate Vice President, New to Canada, Everyday Advice Journey, at TD. "We recognize just how critical it is for new Canadians to build a credit history as they establish themselves and set the foundation for their future here." Credit challenges raise concerns Despite their understanding of the importance of credit scores, new Canadians have identified significant barriers to entry around developing a strong credit history. The survey found 80 per cent of new Canadians had applied for credit since arriving and, among them, 82 per cent surveyed faced challenges during the application process. These challenges included a limited knowledge of credit card rewards programs (35 per cent), a lack of knowledge of the Canadian financial system (31 per cent) and only being able to qualify for a lower credit limit/loan amount, which was not sufficient for their needs (31 per cent). These barriers can cause stress and unease, with two-thirds (66 per cent) surveyed who have applied for credit expressing they are concerned about their Canadian credit history. The impacts of a new credit reality One-in-five (22 per cent) new Canadians surveyed who applied for credit do not feel they have enough access to it to maintain a comfortable lifestyle. Because of a lack of access to credit, new Canadians surveyed have identified: Increased financial stress or anxiety (29 per cent) Limited ability to take out loans (28 per cent) Higher interest rates (27 per cent) Difficulty securing housing (27 per cent) Inability to save or invest for future goals (24 per cent) "Our survey revealed just how impactful credit challenges can be for Canadian newcomers. With many new Canadians experiencing stress and anxiety, loan access restrictions, or difficulty achieving their unique financial goals, the need for tailored solutions is evident," added Kara. "TD is here to help new Canadians with the financial advice and tools they need, no matter where they are in their journey." Credit education and solutions When asked what would help them build or improve their credit history in Canada, one-in-three (34 per cent) newcomers surveyed pointed to better access to financial advisors who understand the unique needs of new Canadians. To support Canadian newcomers on their financial journey, such as navigating the Canadian credit system, TD offers a range of tools, resources and access to expert advice including: Credit cards with credit limits up to $15,000 with no credit history required: Available for eligible Canadian permanent residents, foreign workers and international students including those without a credit history (Canadian or foreign). Newcomer banking packages: Customized banking solutions to meet everyday banking needs, including credit cards, with up to $1,930 in value for the New to Canada Package and up to $690 in value in the International Student Banking Package. Support throughout the newcomer journey: Access newcomer specific financial educational resources in over 10 languages, plus in-branch support at 1,100+ locations nationwide – with extended hours, weekend availability and service in 50+ languages. Conditions apply. Offers end November 5, 2025. About the TD Survey This survey was undertaken by The Harris Poll Canada. It ran from the 25th to 29th of March 2025, with 265 randomly selected Canadian adults who have been living in Canada for 0-5 years. For comparison purposes, a probability sample of this size has an estimated margin of error (which measures sampling variability) of ±6.0%, 19 times out of 20. Discrepancies in or between totals when compared to the data tables are due to rounding.
