Rebellious, retro, radical chiclet: How chewing gum may just sum up our times

Economic Times24-05-2025
Watching IPL , I noticed that no one quite chews as much gum as cricketers. In other sports - swimming, hockey, tennis, squash, football - gum gets in the way of playing. Not so in cricket. So, why doesn't IPL have an official gum? Just like Amul is the official ice-cream partner? Suryakumar Yadav a.k.a. SKY would make the perfect poster boy for a gum brand. The man's jaws are constantly working away at it.The last time we had an official gum partner was in 2009, when Wrigley 's tied up with all IPL teams. Last year, Mentos was the exclusive chewing gum sponsor for Esports World Cup, the global gaming festival - 'to keep gamers fresh and de-stressed.'I am a gum chewer. There are some people who one can never imagine chewing gum - like Manmohan Singh, Narendra Modi, my folks. Back in the day, we didn't have Hubba Bubba in all its variety. Bubble Yum was the big one in North India in the 1980s. Wrigley's came via the phoren aunt. For gum chewers, there was a ladder to climb. One started with chewing gum, then graduated to the big boys' club: bubblegum. It was a bit like learning how to blow smoke rings. Initially, one would get cock-eyed with concentration. It took some learning to pull the thin film of gum over one's tongue, then blow it out seemingly effortlessly with just the right amount of nonchalance. The unassuming gum also had a touch of rebellion, a kind of insouciance to it. If you popped one in the school classroom, it was a minor offence. One was made to spit it out. Madonna went a step further and made bubble gum sexy. There are any number of images of her blowing big ones.In countries like Singapore, gum could potentially be dangerous. It was banned in 1992 due to its nuisance value. Extant stocks of gum were confiscated, and fines - even jail terms - announced. Reasons given were to do with littering, jammed lift doors, and disruptions caused to the mass rapid transport system by gum chewers sticking gum on door sensors.People would travel to Johor Bahru in Malaysia to pick up gum and bring it in illegally. When a BBC reporter argued that such laws would stifle creativity, Lee Kuan Yew said, 'If you can't think because you can't chew, try a banana.'In India, classic chewing gum commercials have vanished from TV screens. Ask any copywriter/visualiser and they will tell you that gum TV ads allowed for wacky freedom. Popping a gum was akin to swallowing an LSD tab. Crazy things happened to the chewee.Centre Shock went with the tagline: 'Hila ke rakh de'. In one ad, a man goes to his barber and gives him a picture of a spiky punk haircut that he wants. The barber puts a piece of Centre Shock in his mouth, blowing up his hair.Mentos - 'Dimag ki batti jala de' - had a TV commercial featuring the evolution of man, which ends with a homo sapien turning tables on a donkey. People Tree in Delhi's Connaught Place subverted the Polo mint (not strictly gum) commercial by printing t-shirts which declared, 'There's a hole in my ass, so why shouldn't there be one in my mint?' It featured a donkey with a hole punched into its belly. How can we forget the Chiclets commercials? A memorable one had a couple seeking each other out inside a darkened cinema - by shaking their packets of Chiclets and following the sounds.Gum is also a metaphor for the times we live in, what with bubble gum social media, bubble gum politics and religion, bubble gum cricket, and bubble gum attention spans. Even more reason to put bubble gum ads back on TV.

MS Dhoni Makes Big Remark On Future With CSK: "Don't Think I'll Be Playing..."

There has been a lot of chatter when it comes to MS Dhoni 's future in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Dhoni took over as CSK captain once again with Ruturaj Gaikwad suffering an injury during IPL 2025 but the entire season was filled with rumours of Dhoni's retirement. However, nothing official was announced by the player or the franchise with Dhoni still keeping his future a secret. During a recent event, the veteran cricketer was asked once again about his CSK future and he had a clear answer. 'I have always said that there is a lot of time for me to decide, but if you are asking about coming back in a yellow jersey I will always be in a yellow jersey, whether I am playing or not, is a different matter.' 'Me and CSK, we are together," Dhoni said during an event recently. 'You know, even for the next 15-20 years (crowd cheers). I hope they don't think I'll be playing for another 15-20 years." Dhoni has been a part of the CSK side since the first IPL season back in 2008 and under his captaincy, they have won the title a record-equaling five times. Dhoni opened up about the bond that he shares with the side and how the relationship with the team and the city has developed. 'I feel the relationship over the years has grown. It helped me improve as a person. It helped me improve as a cricketer. CSK just happened. I think it's good for Chennai. So, today it's good for me also," he said. It was a forgettable season for CSK in IPL 2025 as they finished last in the points table. Dhoni opened up about the season and said that they need to learn from their mistakes. 'Yes, the last couple of years have not been good for us. We have not been up to the mark. But what is important is for you to see the learnings. Yes, you had a bad season. But what went wrong? And that was the question for us last year also," Dhoni concluded.

‘Virat bhai kept shouting maar isko': India star reveals fiery behind-the-scenes of Mitchell Starc's sledge in Australia

Back in the first Test of the 2024-25 Border‑Gavaskar Trophy at Perth, debutant pacer Harshit Rana sparked a reaction out of Mitchell Starc after he rattled the Australia star with a barrage of bounce‑laden deliveries. Starc, a former IPL teammate of Rana at Kolkata Knight Riders, flashed a grin and hushed warning: 'Harshit, I bowl faster than you. I've got a long memory.' Mitchell Starc was at his fiery best at the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2024/25(Files) Over the course of two consecutive overs, the Aussie repeatedly reminded him of his speed, drawing visible smiles but no retreat. Rana later dismissed Starc for 26, easing the nerves of India's new-ball assault. The moment quickly became iconic, not for any bad blood but for the fire, laced with familiarity between two IPL teammates. But Harshit Rana has finally broken his silence on how it really felt in that heated exchange and how Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, stationed at slip, didn't just watch the drama unfold; they threw fuel on the fire. 'I bowled a bouncer at him after a long time. One of them hit his helmet. When he sledged, I just laughed it off. But while I was walking back for my run-up, I was like 'mar gaya. Ab ye maarega mujhe bouncer' (I'm dead, now he will bowl bouncers at me). And then, from behind, Virat bhai and KL bhai kept shouting 'maarta reh, maarta reh, idhar hi maar isko' (keep hitting him at the same spot!). I was like 'Bhaiya aap toh khel loge, mere lagegi sar pe!' (You both will play him easily, I'll get hit on the helmet!),' Harshit said as he recalled the moment on the BeerBiceps podcast. 'He actually hit me on the helmet in the second Test,' he further stated. India had won the first Test of the series by 295 runs but failed to capitalise on the momentum, facing three defeats in the next four matches to concede a defeat. The series was a catalyst for a series of changes in the Indian Test setup, with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retiring from the format, and Shubman Gill being named the new captain. India began the 'Gill era' with a hard-fought 2-2 series draw in England. Harshit Rana with India Harshit was brought in as a cover for India's opening Test of the series against England but was released from the squad thereafter. He remains an integral part of India's white-ball setup, and was a member of the team which lifted the Champions Trophy earlier this year. Harshit is likely to make a return to international action next month when India begin their Asia Cup campaign.

Navjot Singh Sidhu Slams Shubman Gill, Gautam Gambhir For This 'Crime' During 5th England Test: "Injection..."

Former India batter Navjot Singh Sidhu blasted the team management for playing Akash Deep in the fifth Test despite having injury problems. The pacer did not play the fourth Test after picking up a groin injury and he seemed in a bit of trouble while bowling in the second innings of the fifth Test at The Oval. India captain Shubman Gill was even heard on stump mic asking him whether he has taken an injection to help him with the pain. Sidhu pointed out that Arshdeep Singh should have played the game instead of a half-fit Akash Deep and even went on to call the decision a 'cardinal, heinous error'. 'On the English commentary, it was clearly heard that the question was whether he (Akash Deep) took an injection or not. You are playing a bowler in a Test match after giving him an injection, while a fit left-arm pacer like Arshdeep is sitting on the bench. Why didn't you play him? Going in with a half-fit bowler is a crime. It is a cardinal, heinous error. Because your other two bowlers, who are meant to be racehorses, end up becoming workhorses,' Sidhu said on YouTube. With Jasprit Bumrah missing the Test, a lot of pressure came on Mohammed Siraj who bowled long spells and became the leader of the pace attack. Sidhu warned that the team management will end up 'breaking' Siraj if this continutes and urged them to protect him. 'You will end up breaking Siraj too. He will also break down. Because you only have three bowlers. Look at England. They played four fast bowlers. One got injured, and they still had three. Now you have just three, and not even a proper three. It is not even two and a half now." "And to be fair, it is not Akash Deep's fault. If he is injured, then he is injured. He was injured during the IPL, came back, and now he is as fragile as a touch-me-not plant. I think there have been around 13 changes. Bowlers keep coming and going," he added.
