Speaker Om Birla to lead Indian delegation to BRICS Forum in Brazil on June 3
New Delhi [India], May 30 (ANI): Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will lead an Indian Parliamentary Delegation (IPD) to the Eleventh BRICS Parliamentary Forum to be held in Brasilia, Brazil on June 3-5 as per an official statement.
The delegation will also comprise Harivansh, Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha; Surendra Singh Nagar, Member of Parliament; Vijay Baghel, Member of Parliament; Vivek Thakur, Member of Parliament; Shabari Byreddy, Member of Parliament; Utpal Kumar Singh, Secretary General, Lok Sabha; and P.C. Mody, Secretary General, Rajya Sabha.
According to the release, the overall theme of the Eleventh BRICS Parliamentary Forum is 'The Role of BRICS Parliaments in Building a More Inclusive and Sustainable, Global Governance'.
Presiding Officers and Members of Parliament from BRICS countries (Brasil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Iran) and invited nations-- Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Nigeria, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan--along with the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) H.E. Ms. Tulia Ackson will also participate in the Forum meetings.
The Lok Sabha Speaker will address the forums on 'Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation for Responsible and Inclusive Artificial Intelligence' and 'BRICS Parliaments United for the Reform of the multilateral peace and security architecture'.
According to the release, the Delegation will also participate in the proceedings during the Plenary Sessions on the sub-themes including 'BRICS Parliamentary Action in Search of New Paths for Economic Development'; 'Towards Stronger and More Durable BRICS Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation'; 'BRICS Inter-Parliamentary Alliance for Global Health'; 'BRICS Inter-Parliamentary Dialogue on Climate and Sustainability'.
A Joint Statement will be adopted at the end of the Summit. The Speaker, Lok Sabha may also hold bilateral meetings with Presiding Officers of participating Parliaments on the sidelines of this Forum. (ANI)

On Sunday, authorities carried out a demolition drive at Madrasi Camp in Jangpura, South East Delhi, following court orders to remove encroachments along the Barapullah drain. The clearance was aimed at addressing flooding problems caused by the narrowing of the drain, which restricts water flow during heavy rainfall. A total of 370 encroachments were removed. Of the affected residents, 189 have been found eligible for resettlement and have been allotted flats in Narela, while 181 were deemed ineligible for rehabilitation. During heavy rains, flooding spreads across the area due to these obstructions. The matter was under consideration in court, which has now permitted us to proceed with the removal starting today. He further said, "Notices regarding the encroachments were already given to residents, and until now, 370 illegal encroachments have been demolished. While 189 are eligible for resettlement, 181 are not eligible."

DMDK to reconsider alliance after AIADMK defers Rajya Sabha seat
Premlatha Vijayakanth and Edappadi K Palaniswam (R) NEW DELHI: The DMDK expressed dissatisfaction over AIADMK's decision to postpone the allocation of a Rajya Sabha seat to the party until 2026. DMDK general secretary Premlatha Vijayakanth said her party would announce its alliance plans ahead of 2026 assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, during a meeting in Cuddalore on January 9, 2026. Without directly accusing the AIADMK of breaking promises made before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Premalatha pointed out that parties like the PMK and TMC were already given Rajya Sabha seats by the AIADMK and insisted it was now DMDK's turn. She revealed that AIADMK had given a written commitment to allot five Lok Sabha seats and one Rajya Sabha seat to the DMDK during the 2024 elections. However, when asked for a specific date, AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami reportedly said that such letters typically don't mention the year. AIADMK deputy general secretary K P Munusamy confirmed on June 1 that the DMDK remains part of the AIADMK-led alliance and would be given a Rajya Sabha seat in 2026. Palaniswami also played down the rift, saying the alliance was intact and attempts to break it would fail. The reassurance came a day after DMDK treasurer L K Sudheesh met Palaniswami to discuss the Rajya Sabha polls. Premalatha said politics was closely tied to elections and that her party would also act in its own interests for the 2026 Assembly polls. She announced that DMDK would soon appoint election in-charges for all 234 Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu and begin preparations. She also thanked chief minister M K Stalin and the DMK for passing a resolution in their general council meeting in Madurai on June 1, honouring DMDK founder and late leader 'Captain' Vijayakanth.
