Kolkata: Yet another rape, 10 months after the rape-murder of a PGT doctor at RG Kar, reignited a war of words between Trinamool and opposition parties on Friday.
"This is not just a crime, it is a glaring proof of Trinamool student organisation netas tarnishing sanctity of educational institutions.

A college campus, a sacred place where students come to acquire knowledge, witnessing such brutality is shameful for our society.
Trinamool student netas have repeatedly misused their power to create an atmosphere of fear in educational institutes," said
's Suvendu Adhikari.
CPM's Sujan Chakraborty, while leading a rally outside Kasba police station, took a dig at main accused Manojit Mishra's association with TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
He said, "Illegal unions must be shut down. Student union polls need to be organised."
SFI, AIDSO, and SUCI also took out rallies outside the college and Kasba PS.
A group of demonstrators even scaled the law college gate and tore posters of CM Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee on the campus.
Meanwhile, outside Kasba PS, Left supporters clashed with cops, forcing deployment of RAF. There was massive traffic jam on Rasbehari connector from afternoon till evening because of the protests.
A commuter stuck in traffic near Bijan Setu said, "We were on our way to hospital and are now stuck."
Trinamool functionaries termed the incident "heinous" and said they were "pained". They also lauded cop effort for arresting the culprits within 12 hours of the incident being reported. "We are standing with the survivor. There are no words to condemn such a heinous crime, but we want to tell her that those who committed this barbarity were arrested immediately.

We want her to get justice. The culprits will receive the strictest punishment," said minister Sashi Panja.
Education minister Bratya Basu said, "Directorate of Public Instruction has asked the vice principal to convene GB meeting and find out lapses, if any, and take steps to ensure safety. Cops have already arrested the accused." Panja asked why Aparajita Bill that got passed in the assembly was yet to be approved by the Centre. " Instead of resorting to theatrics on streets, BJP should express support for the Bill. Ask the President to pass it.
A woman's body is not your political battlefield," Panja said.

TMC reaches out to Kejriwal, gets ‘AAP support' for INDIA veep candidate

Kolkata: Trinamool on Tuesday reached out to AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal to get the party's backing for retired Justice B Sudershan Reddy — the opposition's vice-president pick. AAP isn't a member of the INDIA bloc now. TMC, which was a part of discussions to shortlist candidates, did not suggest any name but said that the fight should be "for the Constitution and the idea of India versus BJP and RSS ideology." According to a TMC senior, authorised by the party leadership and INDIA bloc partners, TMC leader in the Rajya Sabha Derek O'Brien met Kejriwal for around 45 minutes. AAP has 10 MPs in the Rajya Sabha and three in the Lok Sabha. A neta aware of the developments said Kejriwal had assured support for Reddy's candidature. "We expect around 10 AAP MPs to vote for the opposition candidate," the neta said. The opposition bloc has decided that no such overture will be made to BJD and YSRC. "These parties need to choose their fight," a TMC neta said. Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, who were in Kolkata, were kept abreast of the developments. While admitting that numbers were stacked in favour of NDA candidate CP Radhakrishnan, a TMC senior said: "Even with AAP support, we are short on numbers. But we decided that the opposition will put up a strong candidate and we will give it our best shot. .. some battles need to be fought." The convergence of Trinamool and Congress, who are not electoral allies, on the VP candidate selection signals a close floor coordination in Parliament. After the selection of Reddy, O'Brien posted on X: "Teamwork. Candidate for vice-president. Every single opposition party on board. United in our fight against BJP-RSS." This also comes in the backdrop of Abhishek's Aug 11 statement referring to Congress. "If someone walks one step for us, we will also walk one step for them. Our priority is Bengal. In the current scenario, we will stand by those political parties who will stand next to us in this issue of SIR and Bengal's deprivation. That can be Congress, DMK, Sena or Samajwadi Party. We don't have any ego. We are fighting against the autocratic BJP together," he had said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). CU syndicate member seeks revision of UG Malayalam MDC citing overemphasis on Left ideologies

Kozhikode: A UDF-affiliated syndicate member of Calicut University lodged a complaint with vice-chancellor alleging that syllabus of the third-semester Malayalam Multi-Disciplinary Course (MDC) for undergraduate degree programme gives undue importance to Communist and Marxist ideologies, without giving any importance to language and literature studies. Syndicate member P Rasheed Ahmed said the chapters such as 'Janmitham' and 'Karshaka Samaramgal and Bhooparishkaranam' in the syllabus were framed exclusively around the history of Left movements. He alleged that the syllabus attempts to prove that Kerala's social development was made possible solely through Leftist movements, while completely disregarding the contributions of other govts. Only works by CPM leaders and writers from Leftist thought streams were included for study, he added. Ahmed noted that MDC, which replaced the second language courses, should have been designed to impart fundamental knowledge of the language and literary sensibility. Instead, nearly 95% of the current syllabus is comprised of subjects such as political science, history and law. The course, he said, has shifted from 'teaching Malayalam' to merely 'teaching in Malayalam'. He demanded that the Malayalam MDC syllabus should be urgently reviewed by an expert committee, with ideologically biased content removed and restructured to prioritise language and literature. CPM branch secretary stabbed, Congress workers injured in clash in Kollam

Thiruvananthapuram: Workers of CPM and Congress clashed at Kadakkal town in Kollam on Tuesday evening, leaving several injured. The incident happened around 5.30pm near the Kadakkal bus stand during a Congress protest meeting, which was held under heavy police presence to condemn alleged CPM violence. According to reports, a group of CPM workers allegedly stormed the protest site and attacked the Congress leaders and workers. In the ensuing violence, CPM Katadimood branch secretary Vidhun Venu, 30, was stabbed in the abdomen. On the Congress side, several leaders and activists were injured, including DCC secretary V T Sibi, 40, and Congress leader Ansar Ahmad, 53. Party workers Shemi Valavupacha, 28, Shemir, 32, and Muneer, 40, were also assaulted. Many KSU members were reportedly attacked during the confrontation. Among the injured CPM-aligned workers were DYFI Kadakkal area president Arun, 28, Kuttikkadu unit secretary Adarsh, 30, and activists Sreekumar, 26, and Ajith, 29. All injured individuals are currently undergoing treatment at Kadakkal taluk hospital and Kottarakkara taluk hospital. The violence also led to property damage. The Congress mandalam committee office located on Sub-Treasury Road and a bakery owned by Congress leader Ansar Ahmad near the bus stand were allegedly vandalised by CPM workers. The clash is believed to have stemmed from disputes arising from recent school parliament elections. In several local schools, KSU secured more seats than their rivals, reportedly leading to tension between student wings. A few days prior to the clash, some of the victorious KSU members were allegedly assaulted by DYFI workers at a theatre in Kadakkal. Following the incident, police had registered a case against 27 individuals. Although police presence has since been strengthened in the area, tensions remain high and political leaders from both sides have traded blame for the unrest. Police investigations are ongoing.
