Family of heart attack victim wants to meet woman who helped save his life

The Star05-05-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: The family of a 55-year-old man who suffered a heart attack recently is hoping to meet the woman who performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on him and helped save his life.
The woman is said to have gone to the rescue when the man collapsed at the domestic arrival hall at Kuching International Airport on Wednesday (April 30).
In a video that has since gone viral, the rescuer in a striped blouse and black shorts is seen kneeling over an unresponsive man, performing CPR as airport personnel look on.
In a Facebook post on Saturday (May 3), cardiologist Dr Tang Sie Hing said the man's family hopes to meet the woman.
"(His) family members have asked me to publish this... to contact the young woman who performed immediate CPR at the domestic arrival hall at Kuching International Airport at 11.30am on April 30.
"The man, who is from Sibu, had complained of chest pain and stomach ache for three days after a recent trip to China.
"He boarded a flight from Sibu to Kuching, travelling alone.
"When he landed in Kuching and exited the domestic arrival hall, he suddenly collapsed and the woman walking behind him immediately started performing CPR.
"She continuously provided CPR for 30 minutes and assisted in the use of the automated external defibrillator," he said.
Dr Tang said the man was then taken to a hospital, where it was found that he had a near-fatal cardiac event.
"A coronary angiogram showed two of his vessels were 100% blocked and an ad hoc coronary angioplasty was done.
"He heart has now been stabilised.
"He has regained full consciousness and has suffered no neurological deficit.
"His family members and friends express their heartfelt gratitude to the woman for her timely effort.
"Without her intervention, the outcome would be unimaginable," he said.
Dr Tang urged anyone who might know the woman to reach out, as they want to thank her.
Anyone with details or who knows the woman can contact Ngu (013-804 6882).

PM Anwar extends aid to cancer patient and retired soldier in Kuantan

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has presented donations to stage-four nasal cancer patient Mohd Sharul Ikmal and retired soldier Pak Nik Soh, who is nearly blind from optic nerve complications. The aid was handed over on behalf of the prime minister by his political secretary, Datuk Ahmad Farhan Fauzi, during a Ziarah Madani programme visit to Taman Balok Jaya, Kuantan, Pahang. 'I was deeply moved when I heard two truly touching life stories, beginning with Sharul, 27, who, at such a young age, has to battle stage-four nasal cancer. 'Even more heartbreaking, he has a young child whose father is now battling chronic health issues and requires support to survive,' he said in a Facebook post shared by the prime minister today. Ahmad Farhan also shared about Pak Nik Soh, who has been suffering from optic nerve problems for the past three years. 'A father who once served the country now relies on his children and neighbours to continue his daily life. On behalf of the Prime Minister, I extend a small contribution as a gesture of love and solidarity. 'Above all, what is most needed are prayers, attention, and ongoing efforts so that they do not face their battles alone. May Allah SWT grant strength and perseverance to their family,' he said. — Bernama

‘Be responsible, go for timely screenings', says Dr Sim on colorectal cancer risk

Dr Sim encouraged the public to go for timely cancer screenings, also revealing that he had recently undergone his first colonoscopy. KUCHING (Aug 16): Colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths worldwide and in Malaysia, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian. 'Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the world, but the second most common cancer in Malaysia. It is the most common cancer among Malaysian men, and the second most common among women,' he said in a Facebook post. He thus encouraged the public to go for timely cancer screenings, also revealing that he had recently undergone his first colonoscopy. Recounting his own experience, he admitted feeling anxious while waiting for his biopsy results. 'I had my first colonoscopy a few days ago as I just belong to the high-risk category. 'As a doctor, I must admit I felt anxious for more than 24 hours waiting for the biopsy results, but was relieved that it was a satisfactory outcome,' he said, adding he would still need six-monthly colonoscopy surveillance. He thanked well-wishers for their prayers and support, while stressing the importance of timely screening. 'Let us love ourselves and take responsibility for our health. Please don't forget your timely colorectal cancer screening, breast cancer screening, heart screening, and so on.' According to him, Malaysia currently recommends colorectal cancer screening for individuals aged 50 to 75 who are at average risk, while those considered high-risk are advised to begin screening before the age of 45. In countries such as Australia, the recommended age to start is 45. 'For very high-risk individuals, I personally believe screening should begin as early as 35,' he said. According to the Health Ministry, colorectal cancer remains one of the leading cancers in Malaysia, with early detection through colonoscopy and other screening methods significantly improving treatment outcomes. Meanwhile, in a separate Facebook post, Dr Sim expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government (MPHLG) and its agencies for an advanced birthday celebration held in his honour. Senior officials from MPLGH, led by permanent secretary Datu Elizabeth Loh, presented Dr Sim with a birthday cake during a courtesy call on Friday. Dr Sim's birthday is on Aug 18. He will turn 60 this year. colorectal cancer Dr Sim Kui Hian early sceening
