Phillies Owner Makes Notable Statement on Kyle Schwarber's Future

Miami Herald4 days ago
Kyle Schwarber is in the final year of a four-year, $79 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies and will be a free agent at the end of the season. There's been talk throughout spring training and the regular season about a possible extension, but it hasn't gained much traction.
Both sides seem set on focusing on the season for now and worrying about a contract extension later. However, Schwarber has put together an incredible first half of the 2025 season, earning him his third trip to the All-Star game, and has likely driven his price up for a new contract this offseason.
The 11-year MLB veteran has always had pop in his swing. Schwarber has collected 316 home runs and 726 RBI in his career, averaging over 40 home runs and 95 RBI per 162 games. However, last year and to begin 2025, the power-hitter has put up a respectable batting average as well around .250.
Schwarber has 32 home runs and 74 RBI with a .944 OPS through 98 games in 2025, which are all on pace to shatter his career-highs.
Phillies' owner John Middleton recently broke his silence on the possibility of the Phillies' star returning after 2025.
"We need no motivation whatsoever when it comes to Kyle Schwarber," Middleton said (Delaware News Journal). "He's great. ... He's a great person in the dugout. He's a great person in the clubhouse. We love him. We want to keep him. We don't need any motivation whatsoever."
But the questions is, will Middleton pay what Schwarber will be worth, or will another team out-bid the Phillies' owner? Schwarber commented on the situation earlier this season, saying he has an interest in staying in Philadelphia, but that both sides wanted to focus on the season for now.
Schwarber's latest great moment came at the 2025 All-Star Game when he won the swing-off for the National League. He hit home runs on all three of his swings to take the NL from down 3-1 to up 4-3 and eventually win the contest. Then, in the first game back from the All-Star break, Schwarber hit a leadoff home run.
"It was pretty amazing," Phillies manager Rob Thomson said. "He does amazing things. After that All-Star game, then coming up and first swing, hits the ball out of the ballpark. Everyone was just kind of like, 'That's Schwarber.'"
It seems both Thompson and Middleton would love to see Schwarber remain in Philadelphia for the foreseeable future, but the answer will have to wait until the end of the 2025 season.

Eagles waive rookie offensive lineman on same day 1st-round pick makes his on-field debut

Eagles send a rookie packing while another begins what could be an exciting career. There are so many emotions involved in creating the perfect training camp mixture. There's a confident feeling on the faces of the Philadelphia Eagles as a whole, but for the guys on the back half of the roster, there is no doubt a nervous feeling. After winning the most recent Super Bowl, ten of the 11 starters on offense return, while despite their losses on defense, most of Vic Fangio's unit remains intact. The most recent draft class and free-agency signing period brought more firepower. Ten rookies were drafted. Another baker's dozen was added in an impressive-looking undrafted rookie free agent class. All of those guys won't make the roster. That was evident before the first Eagles training camp practice, as one rookie was handed his walking papers. At the same time, another made a surprising appearance to begin what everyone hopes will be a long and fruitful career. An undrafted rookie free agent gets the pink slip Jihaad Campbell and Marcus Tate couldn't have been any further apart on the Eagles' food chain. One, Campbell, was Philly's first-round draft choice, one they traded up to acquire. The other, Tate, was a UDFA that the organization added on June 2nd. The eve of training camp brought with it a wave of roster moves. Philadelphia signed defensive end Ogbonnia Okoronkwo and defensive tackle Jacob Sykes. The latter was one of three defensive tackles the Eagles had previously worked out. They waived defensive end K.J. Henry and running back Lew Nichols in subsequent moves to make room on the 90-man roster. One day later, more roster additions and subtractions were announced. Nakobe Dean was placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list. Philadelphia signed another of those above interior defensive linemen that they worked out, Joe Evans. To make room for him, Tate was waived. This could be the end of the line for Tate, at least for now. Fingers are crossed for his success, but that's life in the NFL. It's a part of the game we hate seeing. One thing we like seeing is guys on the field and healthy, and wouldn't you know it? Good news came on Wednesday. Jihaad Campbell makes a nice impression during his first Eagles practice Vic Fangio isn't someone who has developed a reputation for fibbing, so when he said Jihaad Campbell wouldn't practice until August, no one gave any thought to the possibility that he might be wrong. Thank goodness that he was. Campbell showed up to Philadelphia's first training camp practice session ready to work, and he certainly put in the work. He practiced fully and even broke up a pass from Tanner McKee while running with the Eagles' second-team defense. What should we gain from Campbell's first session? No one is sure. Everyone is wearing shorts. No one is wearing pads. We'll revisit this conversation once contact is allowed. For now, we'll label this as Campbell getting off to a fast start. We'll see where things go from here and how he progresses as the summer wears on.

"That cycle is going to continue so they can get people to watch" - Jalen Williams takes a swipe at NBA media

"That cycle is going to continue so they can get people to watch" - Jalen Williams takes a swipe at NBA media originally appeared on Basketball Network. Oklahoma City Thunder forward Jalen Williams had a breakout 2024-25 season where he earned both All-Star and All-NBA selections. The 24-year-old was also the second-best player on the Thunder team that won it all last season. But for all the success that J-Dub has had in the last year, he was not spared from the fire-spitting mouth of NBA talking heads. During his recent appearance on "The Young Man and the Three" podcast, he took a swipe at the media. "The media thing for me is like, they're gonna love you one day, they're gonna hate you the next day. And that cycle is going to continue so they can get people to watch," said J-Dub. "And people don't actually watch, they just listen to what people are saying," Williams stated. Did J-Dub take a shot at Stephen A. Smith? Without mentioning names, Williams was likely referring to ESPN's top mouthpiece, Stephen A. Smith, who was caught by cameras playing solitaire on his mobile phone while watching Game 4 of the 2025 NBA Finals featuring Jalen's Thunder versus the Indiana Pacers. Smith also made special mention of J-Dub back during the Denver Nuggets series, specifically during the series opener when SAS called him a no-show following a 5-20 effort and the Thunder getting upset by the 2023 NBA champs. But when Williams exploded for a playoff career high 40 points in Game 5 of the Finals, Stephen A. defended J-Dub from his fellow talking heads who compared him to Scottie Pippen by saying he is more than a sidekick to SGA. "That helped me a lot because then, I have a bad game, it's like I'm actually the only one experiencing what's going on," he added. "So, that was a big one for me. And then two was just like, just keep the main thing the main thing. There's gonna be ups and downs during the series. But like, whatever work you put in during the summer is going to show up when you need it and I was pretty confident in a lot of the stuff that I had done leading up to it," Williams bounced back from a poor Game 6 That helped him greatly in Game 7 because after he had that 40-point explosion in Game 5, Williams played horribly and struggled for 16 points in Game 6 as the Pacers forced a winner-take-all game in Oklahoma City. But he muted the media and their criticisms to bounce back with a solid Game 7 where he scored 20 points and had the best +/- on the team of +13, which helped the Thunder clinch the 2025 NBA championship. After the season, J-Dub was rewarded by the Thunder with a massive five-year maximum contract that could be worth up to $285 million. Although that deal does not kick in until next year, Williams recently admitted playing in the NBA has helped him retire both of his Air Force servicemen parents. With one of the biggest contracts in NBA history, there's no doubt that the NBA media will be on Williams' back next season, especially if he has a bad game or a bad stretch. But after hearing what he had to say about them, it looks like outside criticisms won't be able to shake his story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Jul 20, 2025, where it first appeared.

Trump unveils his plan to put AI in everything

Ensuring AI reflects 'objective truth,' slashing onerous regulations, disseminating US AI tools around the world, and fast-tracking AI infrastructure: this is all part of President Donald Trump's vision for AI policy. The White House unveiled its 'AI Action Plan' Wednesday ahead of a scheduled appearance by the president at an event in Washington, DC. The 28-page document lays out three pillars of US AI policy in the Trump era: accelerating AI innovation, building American AI infrastructure, and leading international diplomacy and security around AI. Trump is expected to sign a series of related executive orders this week to help implement the plan. He's slated to appear at an event Wednesday evening hosted by the Hill and Valley Forum and the All-In Podcast, which is co-hosted by tech investor-turned-White House AI and crypto czar David Sacks. Large chunks of the plan echo bipartisan rhetoric about ensuring the US maintains a leading role in the AI race and integrates the tech into its economy. But other aspects reflect the Trump administration's push to root out diversity efforts and climate initiatives, as well as a Republican-led attempt to ban states from regulating AI. The plan recommends deleting 'references to misinformation, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and climate change' in federal risk management guidance and prohibiting the federal government from contracting with large language model (LLM) developers unless they 'ensure that their systems are objective and free from top-down ideological bias' — a standard it hasn't yet clearly defined. It says the US must 'reject radical climate dogma and bureaucratic red tape' to win the AI race. The Trump administration wants to create a ''try-first' culture for AI' It also seeks to remove state and federal regulatory hurdles for AI development, including by denying states AI-related funding if their rules 'hinder the effectiveness of that funding or award,' effectively resurrecting a failed congressional AI law moratorium. The plan also suggests cutting rules that slow building data centers and semiconductor manufacturing facilities, and expanding the power grid to support 'energy-intensive industries of the future.' The Trump administration wants to create a ''try-first' culture for AI across American industry,' to encourage greater uptake of AI tools. It encourages the government itself to adopt AI tools, including doing so 'aggressively' within the Armed Forces. As AI alters workforce demands, it seeks to 'rapidly retrain and help workers thrive in an AI-driven economy.' The administration recently lifted restrictions on Nvidia from selling some of its advanced AI chips to companies in China. But the AI Action Plan suggests it's still contemplating some restrictions on selling US technology to foreign adversaries, by recommending the government 'address gaps in semiconductor manufacturing export controls.' The plan also discusses fostering science and research around AI development, investing in biosecurity as AI is used to find new cures for diseases, and creating the necessary legal framework to combat deepfakes. Implementing this plan and 'Winning the AI race' will ensure the country's security, competitiveness, and economic wellbeing, according to an intro by Sacks, the president's science and technology advisor Michael Kratsios, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. 'The opportunity that stands before us is both inspiring and humbling,' they write. 'And it is ours to seize, or to lose.'
