Texas A&M athletic director shocks with announcement about future of baseball program
After days of anticipation, Texas A&M athletic director Trev Alberts has seemingly made his decision regarding the future of the baseball program moving forward.
According to The Eagle reporter Alex Miller, Alberts announced on Friday afternoon that head coach Michael Earley will remain with the team after missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2021. The Aggies were also the first program in college baseball since 1991 to be ranked as the unanimous No. 1 team and not make postseason play.
Here is the statement from Alberts on the state of the position and his discussions with Earley:
Earley's first season at the helm was one that most Aggie fans hope to forget. Texas A&M went 30-26 (11-19 SEC) after being ranked as the best team in baseball before the season began. The only hope of the program reaching postseason play diminished after the Aggies fell to the LSU Tigers in the Southeastern Conference Tournament quarterfinals.
Following the NCAA Tournament Selection Show, and the inevitability of the Aggies missing the tournament was confirmed, the discussions of the program's direction were sparked immediately. Potential head coaches were tossed around on social media, as the fanbase felt that Alberts would move forward following what was a disappointing season, to say the least.
However, it seems that Alberts and the Texas A&M baseball program are moving forward with Earley at the helm for the foreseeable future. The former hitting coach and assistant turned head coach looks to be getting an opportunity to rewrite the wrongs that occurred in 2025 and get Texas A&M back to the apex of college baseball.
Will Earley turn things around in College Station? Only time will tell. If retaining Earley is truly the final decision, the surprising announcement from Alberts will certainly raise eyebrows if the program is not able to have success in 2026.

Texas A&M will reportedly play rising Big 12 team during the 2025 season
Texas A&M will reportedly play rising Big 12 team during the 2025 season Sources: Texas A&M will play at Oklahoma State as part of its 2025-26 non-conference schedule im year one under @BuckyBasketball . The date is set for November 9th, at Gallagher-Iba Arena. OSU will play a return game at Reed Arena in '26-'27. — Billy Liucci (@billyliucci) June 2, 2025 Texas A&M's 2025 basketball season is poised to be one of the most exciting campaigns in program history, as new head coach Bucky McMillan brings an exciting play style that Aggie fans have not seen since Billy Gillispie led the program almost two decades ago. After bringing in nine players from the transfer portal, the 2025 Aggie basketball team is talented enough to compete for an NCAA Tournament bid in 2026. McMillan's coaching staff is now all but complete. While he will likely add one or two more players from the transfer portal before the season begins, we can now focus on the out-of-conference schedule, which will reportedly include a matchup with Oklahoma State in Gallagher-Iba Arena on Sunday, November 9. The Cowboys are one of the more respectable programs in the Big 12, and despite several down years, they always provide a competitive showing. Like Texas A&M football's home-to-home matchup with Notre Dame, culminating with Week 3's road match against the Irish this coming season, Texas A&M will host Oklahoma State during the 2026-2027 season, providing both teams a chance to protect home court. Like McMillan, Oklahoma State head coach Steve Lutz is one of the up-and-coming young coaches in the country. While his first season resulted in a 17-18 finish, his future is bright after bringing in six transfers this offseason. The Cowboys are expected to be competitive in the Big 12 next season. Two top pitchers in NCAA softball will meet in Women's College World Series semifinals
On Monday night at 7 p.m. ET, fans of college softball will be treated to what is shaping up to be one of the best pitcher's duels of the NCAA Tournament. In the semifinals of the Women's College World Series, No. 2 Oklahoma will face No. 12 Texas Tech. The matchup will probably pit two of the best pitchers in the sport against each other. It's likely that Oklahoma ace Sam Landry will take the circle for the Sooners in a must-win game, while NiJaree Canady — arguably the sport's top arm — will lead the Red Raiders. Advertisement Canady was the National Player of the Year last season at Stanford and in the offseason transferred to Texas Tech, wooed by what is reportedly the richest NIL deal in Division I college softball. According to ESPN, Texas Tech's NIL collective — the Matador Club — signed Canady to a $1,050,024 contract. She had taken Stanford to two straight World Series and aimed to do the same for the Red Raiders. The investment by Texas Tech paid off in a big way. Canady was a unanimous First-Team All-American, the NFCA Pitcher of the Year and the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year. She led the Red Raiders to their first Big 12 Tournament title (where she pitched in every game and didn't allow a run), their first Super Regional appearance, and their first trip to the World Series in Oklahoma City. Canady leads all of Division I softball in victories (32), ERA (0.86) and hits allowed per seven innings (3.61). She's also seventh in strikeouts per seven innings (9.5), seventh in shutouts (7), and fourth in strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.88). She's been an asset at the plate this season too with 11 home runs, 34 RBI and a .306 batting average. And she's done all of this, apparently, while playing with an injured hamstring. Advertisement While Canady has led Texas Tech to unprecedented heights, Landry is trying to keep Oklahoma in its throne atop the sport. The Sooners have won four straight national championships and are now just a few games away from winning a wildly impressive fifth consecutive title. Like Canady, Landry came to Oklahoma via transfer, arriving in the offseason from Louisiana. She was coached there by current Texas Tech skipper Gerry Glasco. This season, with Patty Gasso's Sooners, Landry was named a First Team All-American and the SEC Newcomer of the Year. She's piled up a 25-5 record, a 1.89 ERA and 180 strikeouts. If necessary, Texas Tech and Oklahoma will face off twice on Monday night, but the first game is a must-win for the Sooners as the tournament is still in its double-elimination stage. A Game One victory for the Red Raiders would send them to the finals of the College World Series. A loss would set up a pivotal Game Two, giving the Sooners another chance to defend their title. Advertisement This is where it's worth noting that Canady has won 10 straight games. Her last loss came on May 2 where she pitched just one inning against BYU. She hasn't lost a game where she's pitched multiple innings since April 17. On Monday night, Oklahoma's dynasty is on the line, while Canady has the chance to grow her legend.

Former Texas A&M defensive back earns United Football League honors
Former Texas A&M defensive back earns United Football League honors Former Texas A&M defensive back Leon O'Neal Jr. has become known as the heart of the United Football League's Houston Roughnecks organization with his dedication and determination on the gridiron. The hours of hard work have paid dividends for the former Aggie Heart Award winner, as he was named to the All-UFL Team on Monday morning. O'Neal Jr. made an immediate impact with Texas A&M in 2018, where he recorded 14 total tackles and one interception in 13 games played as a freshman. From that moment forward, he was all over the field for the Aggies. He finished his collegiate career with 161 total tackles, 18 pass deflections, and six interceptions, becoming one of the most experienced and talented defensive backs in the Southeastern Conference. Following his four-year career in Bryan-College Station, Texas, O'Neal Jr. entered his name into the 2022 NFL Draft. After being undrafted, he would eventually sign with the San Francisco 49ers, before being cut in 2023 and venturing into the Canadian Football League with the Edmonton Elks. Since being signed by the Roughnecks on January 28, 2025, the former Aggie has recorded 46 total tackles, one sack and one pick-six during the UFL regular season. Above his play on the gridiron is his heart and gritty personality that uplifts everyone around him. That, among many other noble personality traits, is the reason that O'Neal was also named as a UFL Sportsman of the Year nominee, which is awarded to the player in the league who demonstrates excellent dedication to serving the community and incredible aptitude on the field. Congrats Leon O'Neal Jr., UFL Sportsman of the Year Nominee 👏 — Houston Roughnecks (@XFLRoughnecks) June 2, 2025 Although the Roughnecks are not competing in the UFL's postseason, O'Neal Jr. announced that he is already on the grind preparing for next season.
