Deland bar shooting suspect arrested, no bond
DeLand police arrested the suspect involved in a shooting outside McCabe's Bar, which they say stems from a $5 beer.
Volusia County law enforcement arrested Calvin Gilbert on Sunday and will be held without bond. He faces charges of attempted first-degree murder and firearm use while intoxicated.
The shooting happened in the back parking lot, according to police. Investigators say Calvin Gilbert, the suspect they're looking for, bought the victim, who he didn't know, a beer. After the bar closed, Gilbert demanded he be reimbursed for the beer. Police say there was a heated argument and then Gilbert pulled out a gun and shot at the victim, who has not been identified.
'This could happen anywhere. It happens in downtown Orlando; it happens in New York City every day. We're just unfortunate it happened within one month of happening,' said Paul Jones.
Police say the victim was able to duck and keep from getting hit. Police say surveillance cameras show Gilbert leaving on foot. Then getting into a 1999 Nissan Quest van. Paul Jones says he knows Gilbert, and this doesn't sound like him.
'This is definitely not like him. We've met him multiple times and he's a great person. I just don't know what happened last night,' said Gilbert.
This same bar was the site of a deadly shooting back on May 3rd. That shooting happened inside. Jones says he doesn't want the recent shootings to shine a bad light on the area.
'Not this place or this town. It's the number one downtown in America. This is a great place. They've revamped this entire area,' said Jones.
Jones says he's seen police do more patrols around the area and feels safe overall. He says peoples' actions outside can't always be controlled.
'It's unfortunate this happens. Unfortunately, you can't control what happens to people after the bar closes,' said Jones.
Police say the bullet hit an outside cooler and went through the wall of the bar—again, no one was hurt.

Franklin police investigating armed robbery in Cool Springs

Atlanta police searching for 3 suspects after deadly shooting
Atlanta police say a man was shot and killed outside a northwest Atlanta gas station on Wednesday night. Police responded to 1739 Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. NW to reports of a shooting at approximately 9:45 p.m. When they arrived, they found a dead man lying on a sidewalk. Atlanta Police Homicide Commander Andrew Smith told Channel 2 that the victim was shot on the sidewalk near the Chevron gas station, then ran across the street, where he collapsed on that sidewalk and died. Nine years later, famed Pulse survivor searches for closure
As the sun set behind a cloudy sky Wednesday, a small group of people set up flags, lit candles and strummed a guitar while the Lake Eola fountain splashed behind them. At the center of the group was Chris Hansen, a man with a near-constant smile on his face, but whose eyes occasionally flash signs of a deeper pain. Hansen became well known during the night of the 2016 mass shooting as being one of the first to escape Pulse nightclub, and who went back in to help pull others out. Now he works across the country to give victims and allies of violence spaces to be together. 'I woke up from a dream, and I thought I was in a crowd of people in my dream, and I was wondering what it was about,' Hansen said. 'I don't remember, except for the fact that I brought a lot of people together.' Hansen spoke of his struggle to move on from that night, describing the process as glacial. His project, called the Rainbow Remembrance, centers on affirmation, love and hope. It's also personal for him. He pointed to one lantern in honor of a 17-year-old from his hometown who was shot by a police officer. Hansen will take his own turn going through Pulse Friday morning, where he said he will be focused on the wall that saved his life. 'I want to touch that bullet hole. I want to see the that I saved my own life, or that my life was saved for some reason,' he said. 'Through every storm as a rainbow. Who knows why I'm still here or what message I'm supposed to perceive, but I know that I'm here for a reason, and I'm not going to be quiet.'
