Nanta proposes Dataran Bujang Berani to honour Dayak in Kapit
KUCHING: An iconic square named Dataran Bujang Berani is being proposed in Kapit, in the central interior of Sarawak, as a tribute to the significant contributions of the Dayak community in the aspects of national security and development.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, who is also the Member of Parliament for Kapit, said the square is proposed to be built near the historic Fort Silvia to serve as a landmark with the potential to become a symbol to commemorate 100 years of peace in Kapit and the struggle of the Dayak community.
'The Kapit division is one in the interior regions and a part where the Dayak community once contributed to the development of Malaysia that we have today,' he said in a statement from the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) during the launch of the book 'Commemorating A Century of Kapit Peacekeeping (1924–2024)' here today.
He said the proposal to build the square is not only aimed at commemorating the historic peace event but also as a recognition of the Dayak community who have long contributed to defending the country, including before the establishment of Malaysia.
'Before the formation of Malaysia, they (Dayak people) had already fought for the security of Malaya during the Malayan Emergency as Sarawak Rangers and also as Malaysian Rangers,' he said.
Nanta said Dataran Bujang Berani has the potential to be established as a historical reference centre and a symbol of unity for future generations.
With regard to the launch of 'Commemorating A Century of Kapit Peacekeeping (1924–2024)', he said, the book represents an important document that compiles historical information, papers, speeches, and a collection of photographs related to the peacekeeping events among various Dayak sub-ethnic groups in Kapit 100 years ago.
'This book does not only immortalise the historic moments that occurred between the communities in Sarawak and the Indonesian border areas, but also serves as a valuable reference for future generations to understand the foundation of the harmony built today,' he added.

For many Indonesians, the haj is a once-in-a-lifetime journey that typically comes after decades of waiting due to Saudi Arabia's quota system. The wait times, however, have led some Indonesians to attempt the haj without proper visas. This year, immigration officers at 14 departure points prevented about 1,080 people from leaving the country for Saudi without following official procedures. However, some managed to slip through the cracks by entering Saudi Arabia either on a work visa or a tourist visa, instead of a haj visa. As of May 15, 117 Indonesians had been deported for such violations. In one such case, an Indonesian man was found dead of dehydration while attempting to return to Mecca illegally through the desert after initially being denied entry. 'Furoda' visa furore has also erupted back home after about 1,000 Indonesians were unable to depart for the haj because Saudi failed to issue the mujamalah visa, also known as furoda, reportedly causing hundreds of millions in losses for pilgrims and billions for travel providers. The furoda visa is issued directly by the Saudi government and lies outside the Religious Affairs Ministry's official quota system. Indonesia vows to provide US tariff preferences before June talks
JAKARTA: Indonesia has committed to provide a list of preferred tariffs on U.S. goods before starting a second round of talks with Washington scheduled this month, its senior economy minister said on Wednesday after meeting the U.S. trade envoy. The U.S. was Indonesia's third-biggest export destination as of last year, receiving shipments worth $26.3 billion, according to Indonesian government data. The Southeast Asian country booked a $16.8 billion trade surplus with the U.S. in 2024. Economy Minister Airlangga Hartarto said Indonesia is ready to accelerate negotiations with the U.S. before the July 3 deadline for reciprocal tariffs set by President Donald Trump in his drive to end U.S. trade deficits with countries worldwide. The Trump administration has imposed a 32% tariff on Indonesian goods but that has been paused until July along with those targeting other countries. 'We are ready to continue open dialogue and overcome negotiation challenges in tariffs and non-tariff barriers, digital trade... and the issues of economic and national security,' Airlangga said in a statement. Reuters was seeking U.S. comment. Airlangga, who met U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on the sidelines of an OECD meeting in Paris, said Indonesia hopes that a 'mature and measured' approach can open space for it to build a strong and long-term partnership with the U.S. As part of the negotiation, the government has said it wants to increase U.S. energy imports by about $10 billion, including purchases of U.S. fuel, crude oil and liquefied petroleum gas. Indonesia received shipments of U.S. goods worth $26.3 billion in 2024, according to government data. The main Indonesian exports to the U.S. include electronics, apparel and clothing, and footwear.

Nowhere to hide for Indonesian woman in Terengganu immigration sweep
KUALA TERENGGANU: An Indonesian woman's attempt to hide under a bed to evade arrest failed after being spotted by enforcement officers from the Terengganu Immigration Department (JIM). Terengganu JIM director Mohd Yusri Mohd Nor said the woman in her 30s was among 11 illegal immigrants arrested in Ops Sapu raids carried out in the Kemaman and Kuala Terengganu districts yesterday. He said the woman was arrested at a house in Bandar Baru Kijal in Kemaman for overstaying after her last line of defence included a marriage certificate which could not be authenticated. 'During the raid, a man in the house claimed to be living alone but his deception was exposed after enforcement officers found women's clothing in a room. 'Upon checking, we discovered a woman hiding under a bed. The couple then showed a marriage certificate, but its validity could not be confirmed because it was not issued by an authoritative religious office in Malaysia,' he said in a statement today. Mohd Yusri said that apart from that hide-and-seek episode, the immigration party also arrested four Bangladeshis, three Indonesians. and two Thais aged between five and 49 years old in raids at seven premises. According to him, all the detainees were taken to the Ajil Immigration Depot for further investigation under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. In addition, a notice was issued to a local man to appear at the state JIM office to assist in investigations under the same act.
