How Ajay Devgn's Drishyam, Released On This Day 10 Years Ago, Made October 2 A Pop Culture Meme

NDTV31-07-2025
It's that time of the year. Today is July 31, when fans of Ajay Devgn's Drishyam, the Hindi adaptation of Mohanlal's Malayalam blockbuster of the same name, flood social media with October 2 or Gandhi Jayanti memes, every year. And it has been a decade and the admirers still can't get enough of what actually happened on October 2 all those years ago.
So, what occurred on October 2 in Drishyam, directed by the late Nishikant Kamat?
October 2, or Gandhi Jayanti, is a key reference to the story plotted by Ajay Devgn's Vijay Salgaonkar, a school dropout who failed Class 4 and now a businessman in Goa. A cinema buff, Vijay lives a content life with his wife and two daughters.
Things go awry after the family gets caught in the disappearance case of Sam, the son of the Inspector-General of Police Meera Deshmukh (Tabu). A protective father and shrewd man, Vijay uses the date of October 2 to create a watertight fake alibi to protect his family.
When cops question Vijay's daughter Anju (Ishita Dutta), who is Sam's college batchmate, that whether Sam came to her house on October 2, she says, she and her family travelled to Panaji to attend a satsang at Swami Chinmayanand's ashram.
After attending the satsang, they ate pav bhaji for lunch, stayed overnight in the city, and returned the next day on October 3. The family backs all these claims with bus tickets, movie tickets, and restaurant bills.
Not only Anju, every member of the family -- Vijay, his wife Nandini (Shriya Saran), and their younger daughter Anu (Mrunal Jadhav) -- has learnt the story by heart. This fake story is referenced and repeated multiple times in Drishyam, also making it the perfect leitmotif in the film's narrative.
Vijay's fake story also gave October 2, or Gandhi Jayanti a new cinematic reference, which has turned into a social media meme.
Even Kumar Mangat Pathak, one of the producers of Drishyam, had the same thing to say as he marked the film's 10th release anniversary in an X post.

If you still haven't been able to decode what happened on October 2 in Drishyam (Hindi), we suggest you finally watch the film. The 10-year anniversary of the movie is the apt occasion to do so.

'I married you because when I first met you or when I first saw you, I was really impressed with everything you said you were doing. I especially liked the fact that you are a teacher. Everything you said that night made me feel welcome. As an international student, your hospitality was so nice. You have always been nice to me. I felt like the time spent with you would be nice and fun, and you like to work on things. I also like your family.' The importance of family Candace interjects, asking, 'Yeah, who, dad?' to which Aniket laughs and continues, 'Yes, I was really happy when I talked to them and got to know them. War 2 (Hindi) Day 2 Box Office: Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR starrer shows reasonable 60 percent growth on Independence holiday; Adds Rs 45 crore

War 2, directed by Ayan Mukerji, and starring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR and Kiara Advani among others, grew by a reasonable 60 percent on day 2 in Hindi, to add Rs 45 crore net. The two day cume of the movie in Hindi stands at Rs 73 crore, keeping it on track for a Rs 130 crore net weekend. These aren't good numbers but they are decent nonetheless. The trend in the weekdays will be critical for the movie to end with net Hindi collections of over Rs 200 crore. War 2 Adds Decent Rs 45 Crore Net On Independence Day Holiday In Hindi The true value Hindi day 2 of War 2 is around Rs 48 crore net. Due to preference of the Telugu version of the movie over the Hindi version, the collections in the Andhra states for the Hindi version are lower than what they would normally be. War 2's contribution from the Telugu version for the opening day was roughly Rs 20 crore net. The presence of Jr NTR propelled the movie to these numbers. The collections from the dubbed version have come down considerably on day 2 and that was pretty much expected, too. They are pegged at around Rs 10 crore net. The two day India net all language total is a little over Rs 100 crore. War 2's Andhra States Distributor Stands To Lose Big There should be some stability at low levels for the movie on Saturday and Sunday in Telugu. However, for the prices at which the rights of the movie in the Andhra states (all languages) were acquired for, the numbers being put up by the movie are simply not going to be enough. Renegotiations will have to happen, else the distributor will lose a fortune. War 2's Trajectory Indicates A Rs 250 - 300 Crore Net Finish (All Languages) The India net numbers of War 2 are likely to end in the Rs 250 - 300 crore net range unless the weekday drops are too crazy. The overseas numbers are not much to shout about either. A USD 7.5 million extended global weekend, including premieres is probably all that the movie will be able to manage. The hold over the weekdays will be critical if it really needs to hit USD 15 million in its full run. War 2 In Theatres War 2 plays in theatres now. Tickets for the movie can be booked from the box office or from online ticketing applications. Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates.

Mohammed Shami Called 'Womaniser' By Estranged Wife, Accused Of 'Ignoring' Daughter

Indian cricket team fast bowler Mohammed Shami once again found himself in the headlines for the wrong reasons as he was attacked by his estranged wife Hasin Jahan on social media. Jahan alleged that Shami did not want their daughter Ayra to be admitted to a good school. However, she revealed that their daughter secured a place in an international school. Jahan went on to call Shami a 'womaniser' and further alleged that the pacer prioritised the children of his girlfriends and gave them expensive gifts while completely ignoring Ayra and not paying for her school or education. 'The enemies did not want my daughter to get admission in a good school, but Allah foiled their plans, and she has secured admission to a very good international school," she posted on Instagram. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Haseen Jahan (@hasinjahanofficial) 'The father of my daughter, despite being a billionaire, is playing with her life because of womanizing, while educating his mistress's children in elite schools. He spends lakhs on business class flights for some mistresses but claims he has no money for his own daughter's education," she added. Earlier, Jahan said that Calcutta High Court directions to the Indian pacer to pay her and daughter a monthly alimony of Rs 4 lakh as maintenance is a "victory" for her after "a long battle". Calcutta High Court directed Shami to pay a monthly alimony of Rs 4 lakh as maintenance. Jahan will have to be paid Rs 1.50 lakh per month, while the daughter will get Rs 2.50 lakh per month. Jahan, a former model, married Mohammed Shami in 2014. The couple had a daughter in 2015. Mohammed Shami and Hasin Jahan separated in 2018 after she accused him of domestic violence. "I am thankful to God that I finally got victory after fighting such a long battle... Now I will be able to give my daughter a good education and maintain her life easily... If you see the life Shami leads, the status he maintains, his earnings, this amount is nothing in comparison to that... We had demanded Rs 10 lakhs from the court around seven years ago. Since then, Shami's income and inflation have both increased," Hasin Jahan said. "The status with which he leads his life, my daughter and I also have the right to maintain the same status," she added. Jahan's advocate Imtiaz Ahmed confirmed that Shami will be required to pay a monthly alimony of Rs 4 lakh as maintenance to Jahan and said there is a high chance the maintenance might be upgraded to Rs 6 lakh.
