The reaction to Ulrika Jonsson's face has made me terrified of ageing

Metro21-07-2025
'She needs to lay off the sunbeds'.
'Madge from Benidorm'.
'100-year-old neck of a giraffe'.
Just three of the comments on Instagram referencing TV presenter and model Ulrika Jonsson's appearance after her latest podcast appearance, where, among other things, she opened up about her trauma and addiction battles.
When a woman does this, I see nothing but bravery and strength. But the rest of the world? Well, apparently, what she looks like is far more important.
As a result, I've grown terrified of ageing in today's society.
Last week, Ulrika, 57, went on Spencer Matthews' Untapped podcast. She spoke frankly about the challenges she faced in giving up drinking, as well as choosing a life of wellness to be present for both herself and her children.
It was an empowering listen.
The social media comments, however, were flooded with jibes about her skin, speculating about her age with a mocking tone, and demanding to know 'what happened' to her.
Consequently, Ulrika felt compelled to hit back, explaining to her followers that she went makeup-free for the record; hence, her complexion looks different. https://www.instagram.com/p/DMUyaNrqxZv/?hl=en
She also proudly declared that, as she progresses into her late fifties, she 'will never look like the fresh 21yr old [sic] that used to greet you first thing in the morning by the weather board'.
Ulrika's clapback was perfect, as she stressed that, yes, her appearance is going to change as she ages, and it would be both naïve and foolish to believe otherwise – but the fact that she felt a need to address it at all proves we have a problem.
We live in an era of 'Botox in a bottle' and the invention of new cosmetic procedures every other week. It's impossible to open TikTok without a twenty-something influencer trying to flog a ridiculous skincare device to you or urging you to try an anti-ageing hack with zero scientific backing.
Gone are the days of allowing yourself to grow old without injectables or surgery. If you're not panicking about the prospect of going grey or doing what you can to prevent wrinkles, even before you've hit 30, the world wants to know why.
As a result, everyone has seemingly forgotten what a normal, ageing face looks like and greets it with horror and disgust each time they're reminded that – if it weren't for fillers, laser treatments, lifts, and tucks – it's completely plausible for them to look like that, too.
I'm not judging. I fully support doing what you want with your appearance. I also have a lot of grace for the women, in particular, who are condemning other women for looking older.
We live in a deeply misogynistic society where every one of us has been violently chewed up and spat back out by diet culture and unrealistic, unattainable beauty standards.
But we need to break this cycle.
Because I'm left scared of how I'm going to be treated or talked about if I don't go down the route of tweakments and filtering my pictures as I age.
Already, I feel societal pressure to prepare my skin for the future. I wear a daily SPF (which, to be honest, is recommended for protecting against skin cancer) in the hopes that it may also prevent wrinkles.
I think I love my daily skincare routine, but I'd be lying if I said I did it wholly for fun. I know that even when it feels like a chore, I press on because I think it's essential for maintaining a youthful appearance for as long as I can.
But I don't want to fear getting older. I don't want to feel as though I have an expiry date as a woman and that my value and importance decrease with each passing day.
As someone who has fought an eating disorder for 15 years now, as well as almost paralysing bouts of depression and anxiety, I view ageing as a privilege.
It is such a blessing to grow older when not everyone gets that chance, and, after once being adamant that I wouldn't survive past high school, each day I live now is a gift.
Alas, the rest of the world feels differently and is determined to push back their biological clocks as much as possible, making it all the more agonising to merely exist as someone who has higher priorities than fearing developing frown lines or thinning hair.
As women, there are already countless factors working against us – whether that be pay disparity, gender-based violence, slut shaming, or medical negligence.
Please, let's stop making life even harder by trying to prevent the inevitable.
Ulrika Jonsson is far from the first woman to fall victim to age-shaming, and she certainly won't be the last. Even Baywatch babe Pamela Anderson, 58, isn't safe from backlash when she rocks up to a red carpet without makeup.
What's more, glam country music queen Dolly Parton, 79, felt the need to warn Sabrina Carpenter, 26, when they collaborated recently, laughing as she told her in a now-viral clip: 'You'll be this old one day!'
Sabrina's response had me tearful, as it represented everything we need to be telling each other: 'I know, I can't wait. I hope I look like you!'
There's no age limit on beauty. It both breaks my heart and angers me that older women have been made to feel any different.
Now, we need to use Ulrika as a springboard.
Allow her words to generate just one conversation about stamping out the narrative that a woman must remain bright-eyed and baby-faced and defy the laws of biology long into her adult life, and how insane that notion is.
Let Ulrika's defiant stance towards age-shaming trolls be the antidote to the youth-obsessed influencers. More Trending
She's not perfect; no one is suggesting that. As a self-proclaimed sun worshipper, there's no doubt this will have caused premature signs of ageing and avoidable damage to her complexion.
But regardless of how often she likes to sunbathe, she shouldn't be slated for looking like a normal 57-year-old woman.
Everyone, including me, has become so terrified of ageing that they're no longer enjoying being young.
And that's no way to live.

Sharon Osbourne's furious X Factor outburst at 'pensioner' who slammed Ozzy

Sharon Osbourne once revealed she hilariously launched a pen at a pensioner who attempted to speak badly of her husband Ozzy while she was on The X Factor Sharon Osbourne once declared war on a "pensioner" who made the decision to have a go at her late husband, Ozzy. Sharon, 72, has never been one to mince her words and during an interview about her return to The X Factor, the music manager opened up about the interaction with the man who bravely attempted to say negative things about her husband Ozzy. ‌ In 2013, Sharon left the showbiz industry in shock when she returned to the talent show just six years after she dramatically left the programme. But in true Mrs O style, she didn't hold back when she spoke about one contestant. ‌ Speaking on Alan Carr's Chatty Man about the incident, the fiery redhead exclaimed: "I did too!" when asked if it was true she'd launched a pen at the contestant. "And it should have been a knife, really!" she went on to add. It comes after Sharon Osbourne breaks down in tears at Ozzy's funeral in heartbreaking scenes. ‌ When asked why she'd launched the pen, Sharon explained: "This old bloke comes in and starts slagging my old man, so I'm like 'Here, what can I throw at you?' so I'm like 'You can f**k off', threw a pen at him. You little f***er!" But when Alan asked why somebody would attempt to disrespect Ozzy in front of Sharon, she fumed: "They know what they're going to get. How dare he! I'm nearly a pensioner, so f**k him!" ‌ The clip, which has resurfaced on TikTok, has racked up an impressive 58,000 views and was flooded with comments, with many laughing over Sharon's quick wit. "Sharon Osbourne. What a woman," said one. A second went on to write: "Absolute brilliance, love Sharon." "I want their marriage when I'm older and I won't settle for less," said another. The resurfacing of the clip comes just hours after Sharon sadly buried Ozzy. In keeping with the rockstar's wishes, he was buried in the grounds of his sprawling family home, where he shared many happy memories with Sharon, and where he spent his final weeks. ‌ The funeral followed an emotionally-charged day in Birmingham, that saw the Prince of Darkness made one final trip through his home city. Thousands of fans lined the streets to pay their respects and say goodbye as a procession led by Ozzy's hearse travelled from the Aston Villa football ground through the city centre. In moving scenes, the procession stopped outside the Black Sabbath bridge, where the frontman's wife and children stepped out of their cars to lay down roses wrapped in black paper among the sea of tributes left by fans. ‌ Ozzy's widow, Sharon, was seen for the first time since his death and was overcome by emotion as she took in the outpouring of love for her husband. As she broke down in tears, Sharon was comforted by children Jack, Kelly, and Aimee. The grandchildren of Sharon and Ozzy were also close by for the family moment. Last week, the Osbourne family announced that Ozzy had died at the age of 76, just days after he appeared on stage at his farewell Back to the Beginning concert, in his beloved hometown of Birmingham. In a statement, the Osbourne family, including Kelly and Sharon, had said: "It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. "He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time. Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis."

'Worst show on TV' is ending and its biggest critics are full of regret

And Just Like That… Sex and The City fans will no longer be tormented by its divisive revival. Creator Michael Patrick King has confirmed that And Just Like That, which has regularly been branded 'the worst show on TV',is coming to an end after its third and current season. In a statement shared on Instagram, King wrote: 'And just like that… the ongoing storytelling of the Sex and the City universe is coming to an end. 'While I was writing the last episode of And Just Like That… season 3, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop. 'Along with Sarah Jessica Parker, Casey Bloys and Sarah Aubrey, we decided to end the popular series this year with a two-part finale and extended the original series order from 10 episodes to 12. 'SJP and I held off announcing the news until now because we didn't want the word 'final' to overshadow the fun of watching the season. 'It's with great gratitude we thank all the viewers who have let these characters into their homes and their hearts over these many years.' Despite the relentless backlash and calls for it to be over, viewers who have spent three seasons 'hate-watching' are still absolutely crushed. And Just Like That hater Tom Zohar wrote on X: 'PLEASE I DIDN'T MEAN ALL THE THINGS I SAID ABOUT YOU I LOVE YOU PLEASE DON'T LEAVE.' Another fan who loved to hate-watch, Felipe, tweeted: 'conflicted because the show is objectively terrible but i'd still watch 10 seasons of it.' Pop Culture Instagram account Deuxmoi commented: 'See what happens when you complain!!!!!' Others said they 'felt sick' and were 'devastated' but there was also a large sector of the And Just Like That audience who breathed a sigh of relief. Sex and The City was an instant movement when it launched in 1998, making Carrie Bradshaw (Parker), Miranda Hobbes, (Cynthia Nixon), Charlotte Yorke (Kristin Davis) and Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall) four of the most loved women of the decade. Their influence has hardly faltered almost 30 years later. In 2021 the girls were back – well, without Samantha due to Cattrall's fall out with the rest of the cast – in And Just Like That, the reboot so many longed for but never thought would happen. The excitement was unrivalled but soon fizzled out when Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte were criticised for being unrecognisable to the women fans adored and watching Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez) felt like a punishment when we'd all been so patient. The latest series was praised for getting back on track but it also came with bizarre misfires. In one episode, Lisa Todd Wexley's (Nicole Ari Parker) dad died from a stroke. Fans noted that she claimed he'd already died back in season one. Producers did explain the issue, insisting the father mentioned in season one was her stepfather but fans weren't satisfied with the response. Parker shared a series of iconic Carrie moments and said the columnist with the wardrobe worth millions 'dominated my professional heartbeat for 27 years. I think I have loved her most of all.' Davis, who starred as Charlotte for 27 years, wrote: 'I am profoundly sad. I love our whole beautiful cast and crew. 400 artisans working so hard on our show with deep love. 'And to our loyal fans, we love you forever and ever.' And Just Like That is available to stream on NOW. Got a story?
