Preseason college football Coaches Poll: Biggest snubs and surprises
On Monday, the 2025-26 preseason USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll was released based on the ballots of participating coaches from around the country, and to the surprise of no one, the Texas Longhorns claimed the No. 1 spot in the rankings ahead of the first campaign of the Arch Manning era.
While Texas claiming the top spot wasn't much of a shock, some choices on the coaches' ballot defied expectation. Here are the five biggest surprises and snubs from the initial release of the 2025 Coaches Poll on Monday.
1. Ohio State at No. 2
The Buckeyes are all set for their national title defense in 2025, and while they should once again contend for a College Football Playoff bid, it's a bit surprising to see them this high with how much they lost on both sides of the ball after last season, including starting quarterback Will Howard. Still, Jeremiah Smith and Caleb Downs remain, so this isn't completely out of left field.
2. Clemson snubbed from the top 5
This one is tough for me to fathom. If I were filling out a preseason ballot, I'm not sure the Tigers would be outside of my top three. Cade Klubnik is back as a preseason Heisman favorite, Clemson has its best receiving corps in years and the defense has bona fide stars like Peter Woods and TJ Parker. Instead, the Tigers rank No. 6 here.
3. Florida cracks the top 20
The Gators certainly enter 2025 with momentum after ending the year with four straight wins under star true freshman quarterback DJ Lagway, but Florida is the only team in the preseason top 20 that took five or more losses last season. Still, there's quite a bit of offseason hype, and it wouldn't be a major surprise to see the team inside the top 15 of the AP Top 25.
4. BYU ranked amid QB uncertainty
The Cougars won 11 games as one of the most surprising teams in the Big 12 last season, and while they should be competitive again, the offseason saw the late departure of quarterback Jake Retzlaff to Tulane. Without Retzlaff, BYU has an uncertain quarterback situation featuring transfers McCae Hillstead and Treyson Bourget, along with true freshman Bear Bachmeier.
5. Where is Iowa?
While the Hawkeyes have become a bit of a running joke for their dismal offenses under Kirk Ferentz, this year's squad is actually intriguing. The addition of accomplished South Dakota State quarterback Mark Gronowski could raise the ceiling quite a bit for Iowa's offense, and this team is coming off a 10-win season. Iowa doesn't play a flashy brand of football, but I would be pretty surprised if the Hawkeyes don't finish the season inside the top 25.

2025 NFL, CFB, MLB Best Bets, Predictions By Chris 'The Bear' Fallica
National Football League 2025 NFL, CFB, MLB Best Bets, Predictions By Chris 'The Bear' Fallica Published Aug. 4, 2025 10:21 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link "Bear Bets" are real wagers that Chris "The Bear" Fallica is actually making. There's something incredibly special about fall sports. Between college football, NFL and MLB postseason, there is fun to be had for all — particularly when it comes to laying a few wagers. That's where I come in. One of the wagers below features Kyle Shanahan, and it's what I believe to be a really solid bet. Let's take a look at where I'm sprinkling my cash this week. Penn State to make the CFP This is my favorite bet in college football this season. No team in the sport is more predictable or trustworthy than Penn State, which usually hammers the teams it is supposed to, and loses to top-five, top-10-type teams. This puts the Nittany Lions at a 10-2 floor, as they have both Oregon and Ohio State on the slate. The Oregon game is at State College, so let's say PSU wins that game. Maybe the game at Iowa is tricky? Potentially lose at Ohio State? That's it. Even the detractors of Drew Allar have to think Penn State is returning to the College Football Playoff behind a powerful running game and elite defense, even without Abdul Carter. Some people do not like laying a price like this, but I have no issue doing so. A 10-2 record and a CFP berth for Penn State — book it. PICK: Penn State (-290) to make the CFP Penn State HC James Franklin on what makes Drew Allar special Kyle Shanahan to win Coach of the Year Just about everything that could go wrong for the 49ers last year did. Injuries to Christian McCaffrey, Trent Williams and others. Blown late leads. It was just one of those years in the Bay after another agonizing Super Bowl loss. There isn't a ton of depth here, but injury luck doesn't tend to repeat itself in consecutive years, meaning expect the Niners to be healthier this season. The schedule is about as easy as could be coming off a 6-11 season, and, with a win total of 10.5, the Niners are supposed to be good. ADVERTISEMENT Robert Saleh returns to San Francisco to coach a defense that has played as if it missed his leadership over the last couple of seasons. Maybe Shanahan doesn't fit the mold of a young head coach or a head coach from a team that's going to surprise, but there's a chance the Niners could post something like 12-5 and win the division, given that schedule, especially if the concerns over Rams QB Matthew Stafford are realized. I just don't get how guys like Aaron Glenn are shorter-priced in this market, given how the Jets are going to win like six games. PICK: Kyle Shanahan (20-1) to win Coach of the Year Clayton McCullough to win NL Manager of the Year Okay, by now we've all made the joke, "Can you name the Marlins manager?" But Clayton McCullough and the Marlins might be getting the last laugh. The former Dodgers first-base coach has Miami on the cusp of a .500 record after sweeping the Yankees. While it might be a little too much to ask him to reach the playoffs given the strength of the current NL wild cards, it's not unreasonable to think he's in the mix for NL Manager of the Year consideration. This has been a lineup and rotation in flux all season and if Miami actually got some decent pitching from Sandy Alcántara in the first half of the season, it might actually have a legit chance at a wild card. Brewers manager Pat Murphy is a big favorite here, and I guess he should be. But in terms of doing more with less, McCullough certainly deserves consideration if the Marlins finish with a winning record. Obviously, I'm late to the party here in terms of the number, but I'll jump in now in case they continue this hot streak. PICK: Clayton McCullough (23-1) to win NL Manager of the Year Chris "The Bear" Fallica has covered sports for nearly three decades. While college football has been his focus, he also enjoys the NFL, Soccer, Golf, Tennis, MLB, NHL and Horse Racing, with an "occasional" wager on such events. Chris recently won the inaugural Circa Football Invitational and finished in the Top 10 of the Golden Nugget Football Contest. He's a multiple-time qualifier for the NHC Handicapping Championship. Yankees bring in right-hander Kenta Maeda on minor league contract
NEW YORK — The New York Yankees have signed right-hander Kenta Maeda to a minor league deal. New York announced the move on Monday. The 37-year-old Maeda had been pitching for Triple-A Iowa, the top minor league affiliate for the Chicago Cubs, but he was released on Saturday. The Yankees assigned Maeda to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Maeda had a 7.88 ERA in seven relief appearances for Detroit before he was designated for assignment on May 1. He went 3-7 with a 6.09 ERA in 17 starts and 12 relief appearances in his first year with the Tigers after agreeing to a two-year, $24 million contract in November 2023. Maeda pitched well in his last two starts with Iowa, allowing one run and five hits in 12 innings. He went 3-4 with a 4.85 ERA in 12 starts with the Triple-A team overall. Maeda made his major league debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2016, going 16-11 with a 3.48 ERA in 32 starts. He went 6-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 11 starts for Minnesota during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, finishing second in AL Cy Young Award balloting. Maeda, who missed the 2022 season because of Tommy John surgery, is 68-56 with a 4.20 ERA in 226 major league games, including 172 starts.
