Davenport Schools Foundation awards 58 scholarships to seniors
The Davenport Schools Foundation has awarded 58 scholarships totaling $106,300 to deserving seniors from the Davenport Community School District (DCSD,) according to a news release.
These scholarships are aimed at supporting the students' post-secondary education endeavorsand are made possible through the contributions of donors committed to investing in the future of students within the district.
'We recognize that the cost of higher education can be a significant hurdle for many students. By awarding scholarships today, we're not only easing that financial strain but also empowering our graduates to pursue a lifelong journey of learning. We're proud to have the support of the Davenport Schools Foundation in making this possible,' said DCSD Superintendent TJ Schneckloth.
The scholarships, awarded by the Davenport Schools Foundation, reflect a commitment toempowering students and ensuring access to educational opportunities that foster personaland professional growth. By investing in these students, the Foundation aims to nurture acommunity of lifelong learners who will contribute positively to society.

According to the district, 47% of the graduates are headed to four-year universities — and 12 of those students are headed to Cal Poly. The district also listed Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine and Penn State among the campuses chosen by the New Tech graduates. Another 47% of the graduates are on their way to community colleges, while 6% plan to immediately join the workforce. Overall, the students earned more than $130,000 in scholarships, the district said. Saturday's ceremony also celebrated three valedictorians: Magnus Ling and Hannah Pankratz, who are headed to UC Davis; and Riley Reeves, who is headed to UC Berkeley.

Graduates look to future, celebrate past
The end of one journey and the beginning of another was celebrated by high school graduates all over Ashtabula County. Lakeside High School had to move their graduation ceremony to SPIRE Academy following the Dec. 1 roof collapse, and other schools continued decades-long traditions of commencement exercises in gymnasiums, event centers and other sites. The commencement speeches came from teachers, administrators and graduating seniors, providing a diverse mix of life experiences for the students preparing for a new chapter in their lives. Many students were honored for their academic experiences and many received college scholarships. High school bands and choruses provided the steady beat of Pomp and Circumstance and the National Anthem.

Applications For James Beard Foundation's Women's Entrepreneurial Leadership Program Are Now Open
The James Beard Foundation (JBF) is accepting applications for its annual Women's Entrepreneurial Leadership (WEL) program, according to a press release. The 11-week virtual program is designed to help U.S.-based female owners and co-owners with brick-and-mortar business in the food or beverage industries. By offering this educational, training and networking program, WEL provides business owners with the chance to excel and evolve as a leader and discover ways to optimize their business model, as well as identify improvements on internal systems and create best strategies for long-term growth. The Foundation's educational partner is Cornell University. Virtual sessions will be led by Cornell faculty in addition to JBF staff, industry leaders and other experts. WEL's goal is to address systemic issues that women business owners face in their professional journeys and provide tools, resources, and secure networks to guarantee success and more so to see an increase of women-owned businesses and leadership throughout the growing industry. To be eligible for the program, applicants must be at least 21 years old and a woman or nonbinary individual. Applicants must have a minimum of $1 million in annual revenue and be committed to the mandatory attendance policy for each session. The application deadline is June 6 at 11:59 PM PT. Those who make the cut will be notified August 1. The program starts September 8. As the foundation continues to encourage Black women and other women of color to participate, a number of Black chefs and restaurants have received the prestigious James Beard Award, which recognizes ' the exceptional talent and achievement in the culinary arts, hospitality, media, and broader food system as well as a demonstrated commitment to racial and gender equity, community, sustainability and a culture' for all to succeed in. In 2024, Rashida Holmes of Bridgetown Roti in Los Angeles was named one of the Outstanding Chef semifinalists. The Caribbean-American pop-up restaurant is known for its vegan and protein pattie offerings.
