HBCU adds former Super Bowl MVP to coaching staff
A native of Belle Glade, Florida, Holmes brings world-class playing experience and a deep, tactical understanding of the wide receiver position to the Yard. Known for his elite speed, precise route-running, and ability to deliver in big moments. Holmes adds a championship pedigree to an already ascending Central State program.
His football journey began at Glades Central High School. Where he was a three-sport standout and helped capture multiple state championships. He continued his athletic career at The Ohio State University. Redshirting during the Buckeyes' 2002 national championship season, before becoming one of the most productive receivers in program history. Holmes finished with 140 receptions for 2,295 yards and 25 touchdowns, ranking among the school's all-time greats.
In 2006, Holmes was selected 25th overall in the NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He quickly became a key contributor, culminating in a legendary performance in Super Bowl XLIII. Where he hauled in the game-winning touchdown and earned Super Bowl MVP honors. His 2009 season saw him record a career-best 79 receptions for 1,248 yards.
Holmes was later traded to the New York Jets, where he remained a clutch performer, helping lead the team to the 2010 AFC Championship Game. He finished his NFL career with the Chicago Bears, known throughout his nine-year run as a dependable and explosive playmaker.
Now stepping into the next phase of his football journey, Holmes brings his NFL experience, leadership, and player-first mentality to HBCU football at Central State. His ability to teach, mentor, and develop student-athletes both on and off the field makes him a valuable addition to the Marauders' coaching staff.

Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro Cam Heyward returned to practice Tuesday after skipping weeks of training camp sessions in search of a renegotiated contract. Heyward was seen by reporters participating in individual drills during the open portion of practice. Head coach Mike Tomlin said after practice that Heyward also participated in the padded portion of team drills that was closed to media. ESPN's Brooke Pryor, meanwhile, reported that there hasn't been any movement on Heyward's desire for a renegotiated contract. Heyward still seeks a restructured deal with a raise, per the report, but he was willing to put pads on Tuesday for the first time since starting his hold-in on Aug. 7. Heyward's underpaid, but lacks leverage after signing deal Heyward, 36, signed a two-year, $29 million contract extension in 2024 that covers the 2025 and 2026 seasons. His salary is considerably below his market value as a first-team All-Pro defensive tackle. Per Over the Cap, Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones is the NFL's highest-paid interior defensive lineman with an average annual salary of $31.75 million per year. Fifteen interior lineman make $20 million or more per season. Heyward, meanwhile, is making $14.5 million per season on his current deal. But he signed it last summer coming off a 2023 campaign in which he missed six games and didn't make the Pro Bowl for the first time in seven seasons. In 2024, he returned to All-Pro form and was named first-team All-Pro for the fourth time in his career. Heyward told reporters on Aug. 11 when he addressed his hold-in that he told the Steelers when he signed the extension in 2024 to expect him back at the negotiating table if he made an All-Pro team. "It's hard for me, after the year that I had, to really justify playing at the number I'm playing at," Heyward said. "I understand I signed a contract last year. "But to be completely honest with you, when I signed that, I told them, 'When I have an All-Pro year, expect me to come back.' ... I think everybody kind of giggled a little bit. But in my head, I used it as motivation to go out there and prove it." Heyward reportedly first approached the Steelers about renegotiating his deal in February. He showed up to training camp in late July without a new deal and had been a hold-in for several weeks until returning to practice fully on Tuesday. And in the case of the NFL MVP, history indicates those voters most likely will back a quarterback. Not only have quarterbacks won 70% of NFL MVP awards, but they've taken home the hardware 17 times in the last 18 seasons — including 12 years in a row. So when considering an MVP wager on a quarterback, ask yourself two questions: Can his team win its conference, and can he lead the league in touchdowns? You should be able to answer 'yes' to at least one of those questions before making any MVP bet. When it comes to MVP longshots for 2025, your best bets are NFC quarterbacks. For an AFC longshot to win, he and his team would have to outperform Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, and Joe Burrow. That's a daunting task. Therefore, it's far easier to emerge as the top quarterback on the best team in the NFC. With that said, here are five dark-horse candidates to win the NFL's MVP this season: Brock Purdy +2500 The 49ers seriously regressed in 2024. The year prior, though, Brock Purdy was neck and neck with Baltimore's Lamar Jackson in the MVP race heading into their Week 16 head-to-head tilt. Purdy imploded that night, throwing four interceptions in a 33-19 home loss. However, he's shown that he can play at an MVP level — a reason the 49ers gave him a $256 million extension in the offseason. San Francisco will enjoy the league's easiest schedule this season, which means it conceivably could contend for the top spot in the NFC. Which makes Purdy an intriguing MVP longshot bet. Jared Goff +3100 Detroit Jared Goff has joined the ranks of elite NFL passers. The problem with his 2025 MVP candidacy? His team's schedule, especially in the first half of the season. Seven of Detroit's first 10 opponents made the playoffs in 2024. The Lions also face the (seemingly improved) Bears and Bengals during that stretch, giving them nine contests against playoff-caliber teams through Week 11. Now you know why Goff's MVP price is higher than Purdy's: The latter has a much easier path to MVP contention. Baker Mayfield +3400 Baker Mayfield has posted numbers similar to Goff the last two seasons. However, the Tampa Bay quarterback has a much easier 2025 schedule — in large part because the NFC South is arguably the NFL's weakest division, while the NFC North is the toughest. Matthew Stafford +4000 The Rams' Matthew Stafford is getting up there in age, but it's not inconceivable that he could lead the league in touchdown passes this year — especially with a wide receiver corps headlined by a healthy Puka Nacua and veteran Davante Adams, who is an upgrade over Cooper Kupp. J.J. McCarthy +7500 The Vikings' J.J. McCarthy is a Hail Mary MVP longshot. Remember, though, head coach Kevin O'Connell's not only resurrected Sam Darnold in 2024, he got 14 wins and an MVP-quality season out of the former No. 1 pick. McCarthy, who missed all of last season with a knee injury, takes over a loaded offense. Also, his coach is one of the league's best play-callers. In other words, McCarthy has the potential to put up huge numbers for a legit playoff contender. Report: Denzel Ward's shoulder injury not believed to be serious
Browns cornerback Denzel Ward injured his right shoulder in Tuesday's practice. Jordan Schultz reports that the injury is not believed to be serious, though Ward will undergo further testing to confirm. Ward left practice early after a one-on-one with receiver Jerry Jeudy, raising concern as he appeared in pain as he walked inside to be evaluated. Ward, 28, is heading into this eighth season. He has made the Pro Bowl each of the past two seasons and four times total.
