Mandya achieves 102% target under MGNREGA
Mandya district in Karnataka has set a new benchmark under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) by achieving 102.55% of its annual target for 2024–25, providing significant livelihood opportunities to rural communities.
The Mandya zilla panchayat (ZP), which oversees implementation of the programme, has earned praise for its effective execution. A total of 3,44,904 families were issued job cards, of which 1,46,039 cards remained active, benefiting 2,58,697 individuals under the scheme.
Against the targeted 27 lakh man-days for the district, Mandya successfully generated 27,69,096 man-days of employment. Among the taluks, K.R. Pet stood out by achieving 144.55% of its target, creating 7,64,005 man-days against the expected 5,28,538. Maddur taluk followed, achieving 106.63% by generating 6,89,083 man-days against a target of 6,49,083. The remaining five taluks recorded achievements between 70% and 90% of their respective targets.
The zilla panchayat noted that MGNREGA has played a crucial role in reducing rural migration by providing employment opportunities within villages themselves.
For 2025–26, action plans prepared by the gram panchayats have been approved, ensuring that the upcoming works are both necessary and beneficial to the community. Officials have been directed to focus on effective and timely implementation of the projects.
Importantly, the daily wage under MGNREGA has been revised from ₹349 to ₹370 per person, effective April 1, 2025. With the revision, a family completing 100 days of work can now earn ₹37,000 annually, compared to ₹34,900 the previous year.
The Union Ministry of Rural Development announced the revised rates through a recent order.
Mandya ZP CEO K.R. Nandini lauded the achievement, describing MGNREGA as a 'ray of hope' for the rural population. She urged villagers to fully utilise the benefits of the programme, especially with the increased wage rate now in effect.

Mandya ZP CEO emphasises commitment for efficient governance at grassroots level
Mandya Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer (CEO) K.R. Nandini has said that Gram Panchayat Development Officers (PDOs) and taluk panchayat executive officers must work with commitment and integrity for transparent and efficient governance at the grassroots level. Addressing a PDO grievance redressal meeting in Mandya, Ms. Nandini emphasised the importance of public service and said officials must take pride in their duties. 'Several PDOs in the district have demonstrated a good performance. To encourage the officials, health check-ups will be conducted every six months, and awards will be presented to outstanding performers,' she added. Ms. Nandini said that over 17,500 children had been registered for summer camps organised across Gram Panchayats in the district. 'This shows the coordination and discipline among the officials.' Stressing the importance of addressing field-level challenges, Ms. Nandini said PDOs and panchayat staff are being encouraged to voice their concerns freely. Taluk panchayat executive officers have been instructed to hold monthly open-house discussions to address the grievances of PDOs. 'If issues remain unresolved at the taluk level, they must be escalated to the district level for redressal,' she said. Expressing concern over repeated violations of the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement (KTPP) norms, she directed PDOs to strictly adhere to the 60:40 ratio while preparing action plans and ensure that expenditures are made as per decisions taken during the general body meetings. 'Compliance with KTPP rules and the financial code is mandatory,' she noted. She said that nodal officers must be available at the district headquarters every Monday and Thursday between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. to hear public complaints. Prashanth Babu, president of the Karnataka State Panchayat Development Officers' Welfare Association, Mandya District, described the grievance-handling meeting as a positive step towards resolving field-level challenges. However, he raised concern over delays in salary disbursement, urging that PDOs' salaries are credited by the 5th of every month.

MGNREGA ‘scam': Khabad brothers sent to judicial custody, five others get bail
A court in Dahod on Friday sent Balvantsinh Khabad and Kiran Khabad — sons of Gujarat Minister of State for Panchayat, Bachubhai Khabad — to judicial custody, after the end of their police remand in two separate cases. The cases were lodged against them at Dahod B Division police station, following their bail in the first FIR of alleged irregularities in the works carried out under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in district's Devgadh Baria and Dhanpur talukas. The development came a day after a court on Thursday granted regular bail to five others arrested in the first FIR of April 24. Those who have been granted bail include then Taluka Development Officer (TDO) of Devgadh Baria, Darshan Patel; Rasik Rathwa — the current Deputy District Development Officer (DDO) of Dahod, who was then the TDO of Dhanpur taluka; the accountants of the MGNREGA branch, Jayveer Nagori and Mahipalsinh Chauhanand, and technical assistant Manish Patel. The alleged scam — spanning from April 2021 to December 2024 — came to light when the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) Director BM Patel discovered a large number of irregularities in the payments made for incomplete projects under MGNREGA in two villages in Devgadh Baria and one village in Dhanpur taluka, where several metres of road was left unconstructed but payments were made to 'unauthorised agencies', using forged completion certificates of the work. While 14 persons were arrested in connection with the FIR and sent to judicial custody at the end of their police remand, the Khabad brothers were granted regular bail on May 29, after the Dahod Sessions court rejected the police revision petition challenging the bail order. Within minutes of their release from Dahod sub-jail, Kiran Khabad was arrested in a second FIR filed by DRDA in-charge Director while Balvantsinh was arrested in another FIR two days later. On Friday, investigating officer DySP Jagdishsinh Bhandari told The Indian Express, 'Both Balvantsinh and Kiran Khabad have been sent to judicial custody on Friday. A total of five accused were granted bail. The remaining nine accused are in judicial custody… The probe is on in the case of other accused involved in the case, who are yet to be arrested.'

Mamata Banerjee to visit Delhi on June 9
New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee is set to arrive in the national capital on June 9 for a two-day visit, during which she is likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to raise the issue of pending central funds owed to West Bengal. According to administrative sources, the visit is aimed at seeking the release of nearly ₹1.70 lakh crore which the Trinamool Congress (TMC) claims is due from the Centre under various central schemes. The visit is being closely watched in political circles, especially in Delhi, as it is expected to bring renewed focus on the Centre-state fiscal dynamics and the ongoing federal tensions. The West Bengal government has long alleged that the state is facing discriminatory treatment from the Centre, particularly regarding the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), and the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). The Chief Minister's planned meeting with the Prime Minister is expected to focus on these issues. Earlier this year, the TMC staged multiple protests in Delhi demanding the release of funds, particularly for the 100-day work scheme, even holding demonstrations near the Ministry of Rural Development. Mamata Banerjee had also sat on a dharna at Kolkata's Red Road, later using state funds to temporarily continue these schemes—an action that has placed significant strain on the state treasury. The upcoming visit comes at a politically sensitive time, as the West Bengal Legislative Assembly session is also scheduled to begin on June 9, where several key issues and bills are expected to be discussed. Mamata Banerjee's absence from this session adds weight to her Delhi tour, underscoring the urgency of the financial matter at hand. In Delhi, the visit is also likely to revive questions about the Chief Minister's strained engagement with federal institutions. BJP leader Jagannath Chatterjee, commenting on her visit, said, 'It is normal for a Chief Minister to meet the Prime Minister. What's unusual is Mamata Banerjee's reluctance to participate in key platforms like the NITI Aayog meetings.' Chatterjee pointed out that despite differing political ideologies, several non-BJP Chief Ministers—including those of Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Jharkhand, and Himachal Pradesh—have consistently engaged with the Centre through such forums. 'Why does Mamata Banerjee avoid that space for dialogue?' he asked. As Delhi prepares to host another high-stakes meeting between a powerful regional leader and the Prime Minister, all eyes will be on whether this visit leads to any breakthrough on the long-standing fund impasse—or further deepens the ongoing tussle between the Centre and the West Bengal government.
