LONDON, ENGLAND - AUGUST 03: Players of India go off for bad light during day four of the Fifth Test Match between England and India at The Kia Oval on August 03, 2025 in London, England. (Photo by)
Former England captain
Nasser Hussain
and ex-India wicketkeeper-batter
Dinesh Karthik
have lambasted match officials for declaring stumps early on Day 4 of the fifth Test at The Oval.
England, seeking to wrap up a 3-1 win, were 339 for 6 when play was abandoned late on Sunday's fourth day of the fifth and final Test, needing a further 35 runs to reach a target of 374.

India, who had appeared down and out at one stage, require four wickets to end the thrilling series level at 2-2.
England were faltering at 106 for 3 following the loss of stand-in captain Ollie Pope, but the Yorkshire pair of Brook (111) and Root (105) turned the tide with a fourth-wicket stand of 195. However, Brook's exit sparked a mini-collapse, with the home side losing three wickets for 36 runs, including Root's dismissal.
When bad light halted play, England were wobbling, with Jamie Smith two not out and Jamie Overton yet to get off the mark.
Joe Root press conference : On Mohammed Siraj fake anger, why he punched his bat, update on Woakes
'Most importantly for viewers and fans who paid good money — remember, Monday is a workday — and this sort of series deserves a finale in front of a big crowd at an iconic cricket ground like The Oval,'
Nasser
Hussain said on Sky Sports.
'That would have been some finale on Sunday. You may have just knocked off 35, or you may have seen Chris Woakes walk downstairs in a sling.

I'm just wondering if they could have done anything — they had like 42–43 minutes to play with within the laws and the playing regulations.
'If the groundsman had said, 'No, we can't get the covers off in that time,' the umpires would have had to call stumps. But I'm just wondering... you do have the option of the extra half hour, don't you? If you feel you can get a result at 7:30, if there were 10 runs to win, the umpires would have given the team the extra half hour.
I was just wondering if you could give the extra half hour at 6:42 (11:12 PM IST) and say to the teams: 'We're willing to push that back half an hour.
Are you okay with it?' If one of the teams — if India said, 'Our bowlers are exhausted, give them a night's sleep,' then you say, absolutely fine. Or if England said, 'We've had a mad hour there, we want to come back tomorrow,' that's fine. But I'm just wondering if you could have had a bit of common sense in there.
It's a shame,' he said.
Dinesh Karthik also echoed Hussain's views.
Poll
Should match officials have extended play for an extra half hour on Day 4?
Yes, it would have allowed for a thrilling finale
No, the rules should be strictly followed
It depends on the situation
Not sure
'On a day like this, especially in a Test series of this magnitude, it would be nice to have 20,000 people at the ground cheering — whichever team won. I mean, it was either going to be England 3-1, which it looked like for a majority of the day, and then suddenly after tea, India came back with some renewed excellence with the ball,' said Karthik.
'There was a little bit of rain, and I agree the rules are the rules, but I kind of like what Nasser said — that half-hour extension you get. Even if it meant starting again at 6:45, it could have gone for 11 or 12 more overs, it could have gone either way. The crowd would have gotten to see a result. And it's a nice feeling to know that both teams have gone so hard — you give them the option. If they don't want to use it, fair enough. Everybody comes back tomorrow for whatever it's worth.
But today, I think a little bit more common sense would have been to ask. I'm not saying it should have happened, but to ask — I think that's the fair thing to do,' added Karthik.

Rishabh Pant ruled out of Asia Cup, West Indies Tests after Manchester injury; surgery not required

India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant is reportedly ruled out of the impending Asia Cup and "possibly" for the home Test series against West Indies that follows, owing to the injury he incurred during the fourth Test match of the recently-concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series against England in Manchester. India's Rishabh Pant was injured during the Manchester Test match against England(PTI) The 17th edition of the Asia Cup will be played between September 9 and 28 in the UAE. Less than a week after the conclusion of the continental tournament, the Test series against the West Indies will start. India will play only two Tests in that series, between October 2 and 14. According to a report in the Times of India, Pant will not be part of either event after suffering from a toe fracture during the Test series against England. The incident happened during India's batting innings at Old Trafford, when a yorker from Chris Woakes struck his foot. He was immediately carted off the field and rushed to the hospital, where medical scans revealed that he suffered a fracture and was ruled out of action for six weeks. However, he braved the pain and hobbled down the next day to continue his knock, as he scored a fifty to help India draw the match. Pant was eventually ruled out of the final Test, where India pulled off a magnificent six-run heist at The Oval against England to end the five-match series on a 2-2 draw. The report added that Pant would not require any surgery. India will start its campaign against UAE on September 10 and are likely to play all its matches in Dubai. India, Pakistan, UAE and Oman are clubbed in group A, while Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Hong Kong are in group B. This edition of the Asia Cup will be held in T20 format as is the convention with the next ICC global meet being T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

Siraj used the scrambled seam nicely throughout, says Boult

Mumbai: There is a much watched video of Trent Boult being tutored by Zaheer Khan on bowling with a scrambled seam in a Mumbai Indians net session from IPL 2021. Boult had begun his career in 2011 as an out and out swing bowler for New Zealand. Not to remain predictable, he learnt the nuances of bringing in the element of natural variation off the surface that comes from holding the seam of the ball with a slight tilt. India bowler Mohammed Siraj. (Reuters) It's a ball that has become increasingly common in the modern game. More so in Test cricket as bowlers look to weaponise the seam for a slightly different effect. 'The batter is looking for in-swing, in-swing and there goes the scrambled seam,' Zaheer told Boult in the video. It was a ball used liberally by Mohammed Siraj in the recent India-England series. While Siraj running in to bowl lengthy spells was a testament to his stamina, he couldn't have done it without his bouquet of skills. In the Oval Test, the hero of the five-Test rubber swung it one way, wobbled it the other. So much so that Ollie Pope could never decipher the questions Siraj posed constantly. Even England's highest run getter Joe Root was troubled. 'It's a big ball that players are trying to learn,' Boult told HT in a virtual interaction. 'For a lot of bowlers, scrambled seam has become an effective tool. I thought Siraj used it very nicely throughout that series.' Boult couldn't catch much of the thrill from the final day's play at the Oval. He was 'in the air' for most of it, travelling to England to play in 'The Hundred' to be aired on Sony network. Now, plying his trade in short-format leagues around the world, Boult's heart still beats for Test cricket. 'The series was fantastic. A lot of people got behind it,' he said. 'New Zealand is not a great place to watch Test cricket in England. It's on through the night. The only Test I could really watch was the Lord's Test and it was brilliant. Test cricket is a great product followed around the world and when it is an even battle between bat and ball, it's brilliant.' Having had a 12-year long fulfilling international career — he picked up 317 wickets in 78 Tests — Boult is at peace, getting to spend more time with his three sons. 'You still possess that mindset of trying to develop new skills,' he said, ahead of another debut to a new format for the Birmingham Phoenix at the age of 36. 'To stay up to date with the skills is a good aspiration to have. T20 is a format that is quickly evolving. The Hundred is slightly different and a new challenge. It's about not getting too complacent.'

Ricky Stenhouse Jr.'s car will carry a "Real American Beer" paint scheme and "HULKAMANIA Forever" decal on his Hyak Motorsports No. 47 Chevrolet. The design features the ripping off of his shirt, an image synonymous with Hogan's energy and personality. It is an emotional tribute in the wake of Hogan's passing just this week, for fans of both motorsport and wrestling alike. The partnership rekindles a brand‑racing connection Stenhouse Jr. has partnered with Hogan's Real American Beer brand before, so this isn't the first time. The livery featuring a patriotic theme first turned heads earlier this summer at Michigan International Speedway with a red, white, and blue scheme. Based on the brand, Real American Beer sees this opportunity as one that serves as "a celebration of strength and nostalgia," which the brand says also makes a natural pairing with the high-octane excitement of NASCAR. What's at stake this weekend for Ricky Stenhouse Jr.? Stenhouse Jr. is approaching the 'Go Bowling at The Glen' race at Watkins Glen International this weekend with a distinct purpose. Now 18th in the NASCAR Cup Series standings, he is looking to finish strong as the season progresses. The focus is also on the pure performance side, but this weekend is not simply a points battle, but also a chance to unleash the energy of the Hulkster on track. This moment will be one to remember and will be honored by everyone sitting at home watching, and by those at the venue. It is a rarity for the wrestling and motorsports worlds to cross over in any fashion, which made it all the more poignant, and a tribute to Hogan's years of staying power and to fans and their eventual lines of demarcation between hero worship and friendship.
