Great Capital Divide: Where Delhi's Roads Save Lives — And Take Them

Great Capital Divide: Where Delhi's Roads Save Lives — And Take Them

Time of India28-07-2025
New Delhi: Delhi's road safety map resembles a patchwork — stretches of visible progress stitched alongside pockets of persisting peril.
The first half of 2025 brings both relief and unease as the city's safety gains remain uneven as some districts have remained unchanged.
Between Jan and June this year, the capital recorded 677 fatal road accidents, a dip from 764 in the same period in 2024. Road deaths also dropped by nearly 10%, from 778 to 700. At first glance, these figures suggest the city is moving in the right direction. Yet, the gains are not spread evenly across its districts.

In central Delhi, the change is tangible. A typical evening near Red Fort or ISBT Kashmiri Gate still buzzes with office-goers, tourists and roadside vendors.
However, fatal crashes in the district dropped from 38 to 17, and deaths more than halved, from 39 to 17. Officials credit stricter enforcement and physical road changes, like grill installations. "In areas near Chandni Chowk, which once saw fatal accidents between pedestrians and vehicles, the installation of grills and U-turn barriers has worked wonders.
Fatalities near one hotspot dropped from 11 to 3," said a senior traffic officer.

Interestingly, central Delhi overtook the New Delhi district as the least fatal zone in 2025.
New Delhi district, surrounded by VIP areas like Kartavya Path and Chanakyapuri, remains among the safer zones. Fatal accidents and fatalities have dropped from 20 to 19. It is second only to central Delhi.
While the core of Delhi has become safer, its edges are fraught with danger, as earlier.
Outer North, stretching across Narela, Bawana and Alipur continues to be Delhi's deadliest zone.
Fatal accidents here rose from 93 to 97, and deaths from 95 to 103, when the total number of crashes dropped from 313 to 263. Like 2024, it tops the charts this time too.
Sources said it is a place that sees a lot of high-speed trucks. A single misstep can be catastrophic.
The data bears this out. Around 36% of total crashes in the district are fatal. "It is also because people do not follow road ethics in most of these places," sources said, adding, "North district, too, struggles with similar challenges.
It has seen 61 fatal crashes this year."
The rest of Delhi sits between these extremes. South West district, covering Vasant Vihar, IGI Airport and Kapashera, is second on the list with 73 fatalities, down from 80 last year. West Delhi, with busy corridors like Rajouri Garden and Punjabi Bagh, saw a dip from 69 deaths last year to 64 now, but still ranks high on the chart. Traffic officials blame a mix of signal-jumping, illegal turns and poor lane discipline for the persistently high numbers.
Some districts, however, show promising trends. Dwarka cut fatal crashes from 50 to 39 and deaths from 51 to 41, aided by its CCTV network and wide, well-monitored roads. North West district, covering parts of Rohini and Pitampura, saw fatalities drop from 63 to 45. East Delhi — from Mayur Vihar to Akshardham crossings — recorded a decline in deaths from 43 to 33. Even Rohini, with its high commuter density, managed to reduce fatalities from 40 to 32.
Yet, trouble lingers on the city's borders. The outer districts, covering Nangloi and Tikri, saw fatal crashes and deaths climb from 45 to 51, despite fewer total crashes (from 180 to 164). The South district, home to the winding Mehrauli-Badarpur stretch and areas like Saket and Sangam Vihar, saw fatalities inch up from 33 to 35.
Adding complexity to the count is the rise in injuries. Even as fatal accidents and deaths dropped, injuries went up from 2,566 last year to 2,617 this year.
Experts point to the growing number of vulnerable road users — delivery riders, two-wheelers, pedestrians — who survive crashes but with severe injuries.
The numbers tell a story of cautious progress. Central Delhi's turnaround proves that redesigned central verges or other road engineering methods can save lives. However, the deadlier stretches of Outer North, South West, and Outer districts — where heavy trucks rule and infrastructure lags — remain glaring weak spots.

Teens can be ICE agents as US drops age cap. Check eligibility criteria, benefits and more

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced Wednesday it was eliminating age limits for applicants to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) positions. The DHS has opened doors for applicants as young as 18, and with no upper limit, to join the agency amid President Donald Trump's aggressive immigration crackdown. Previously, applicants had to be at least 21 and no older than 37 or 40, depending on the role within the agency tasked with locating, arresting and detaining noncitizens lacking legal status. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem told "Fox & Friends" that applicants as young as 18 can now be "trained and ready." The department said in a news release that it would waive age limits for new applicants so 'even more patriots will qualify to join ICE," the agency responsible for finding, arresting, detaining and removing people who are in the US illegally. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cardiologist Reveals: The Simple Morning Habit for a Flatter Belly After 50! Not just this, in an attempt to lure candidates, the ICE is offering incentives including signing bonuses of up to $50,000, student loan forgiveness, enhanced retirement benefits and extensive overtime opportunities, reports NewsWeek. The move further escalates the department's effort to radically increase the number of agents granted the ability to detain people suspected of having immigrated illegally to America. Live Events A press release from the DHS called for "patriotic Americans" to join ICE to help remove the "worst of the worst" from the United States. Due to the scrapped age restrictions, "even more patriots will qualify to join ICE in its mission to arrest murderers, pedophiles, gang members, rapists, and other criminal illegal aliens from America's streets," the department said. ICE is a key player in the Trump administration's immigration enforcement efforts. Congress passed a spending bill earlier this summer to give the agency funds to hire 10,000 more staff. 80,000 candidates applied to join ICE DHS said that more than 80,000 candidates applied to join ICE less than one week from the launch of the department's recruitment efforts, as per reports. Noem called the efforts "extremely successful." "It's overwhelming, to see the amount of response and support that our ICE officers have gotten and people who want to join their ranks," Noem said. The department said it needs "dedicated Americans to join ICE to remove the worst of the worst out of our country" in a press release. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, in an X post: "Calling all patriots. Submit your application TODAY." In Trump's highly controversial spending bill, which he signed into law in early July, ICE received $45 billion for building new detention centers and $14 billion for deportation operations. The deluge of funding instantly made it the largest federal law enforcement agency in the nation, surpassing each individual branch of the military. The Department of Homeland Security said all recruits will be required to go through medical screening, drug screening and complete a physical fitness test.

Video sparks outrage: Gujarat man pesters feasting lion in show of bravado, arrested; court denies him bail

AHMEDABAD/RAJKOT: In a thoughtless act of perceived daredevilry, a man from a village in Bhavnagar's Talaja got dangerously close to and pestered a lion enjoying its kill in the Shetrunji Wildlife Division, sparking widespread outrage from nature lovers and general public alike. The act was caught on video after which the man, identified as Gautam Shiyal, was tracked down and arrested by forest officials. Charged under various sections of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, he was presented before a Talaja court, which denied him bail. The clip, reportedly filmed in the vicinity of Bambhor and Talli villages, shows people gathered to watch the lion, and Shiyal venturing too close and disturbing it. As Shiyal approaches closer, the distracted and now-cautious lion is seen getting up and walking towards him. People are also heard trying to distract the lion and prevent an attack on Shiyal. As Shiyal retreats, the lion pauses a few moments before returning to its kill. As the video went viral, wildlife conservationists condemned the act. The forest department ordered an inquiry with deputy conservator of forests D K Sadhu leading the investigation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brigade Showcase 2025 Limited-time Event from Aug 8–10 at Sheraton Grand, Brigade Gateway Brigade Group Learn More Undo You Can Also Check: Ahmedabad AQI | Weather in Ahmedabad | Bank Holidays in Ahmedabad | Public Holidays in Ahmedabad The team traced the location of the incident using human intelligence and soon zeroed in on Shiyal. Assistant conservator of forests Bhagirathsinh Zala said that the accused was presented in the Talaja court, where his bail application was denied, and he was remanded to Bhavnagar district jail. "People must understand that wild animals are not spectacles," a senior forest officer said. "Approaching or disturbing them is not only reckless but also a punishable offence." Meanwhile, another video has gone viral in which a lion is seen emerging from the bushes on the busy Bilkha-Visavadar road. A forest official said, "In Junagadh, it's not uncommon to spot lions in villages near Gir and Girnar forests, but this time, it was an unexpected appearance in broad daylight near Junagadh city itself on the Bilkha-Visavadar road. All vehicles came to a halt." The lion, seemingly unfazed by the commotion, calmly observed the scene. It stood directly in front of an auto-rickshaw, prompting the driver to stop immediately. The passengers inside were seen capturing the extraordinary moment on their phones. Officials said that for a brief period, the lion and the onlookers were locked in a silent standoff. Eventually, a team of foresters arrived and successfully guided the lion back into the forest. The recent lion census revealed that Gujarat has 891 lions, grown by 70% in a decade, up from 523 in 2015. With one nomadic lion recorded in Devbhumi Dwarka, all 11 districts in Saurashtra officially recorded presence of the big cat.
