
India's First Weather Derivative aims to protect farmers from weather volatility
He noted that farmers and agri-based industries can use historical weather data to assess whether areas are drought-prone, flood-prone, or receive normal rainfall.
'So, under this memorandum of understanding, rainfall has been taken into consideration because rain is the most important parameter concerning agriculture and hence the economy. Towards this direction, the historical data will also be provided by IMD so that there can be an assessment with respect to the climatic hazard potential of rainfall during the monsoon season. And also the real-time rainfall; whatever is available from IMD in the gridded format or point rainfall will be provided to assess the variation of rainfall on their end and also to provide the services,' he added.
'Agriculture in our country depends especially on monsoon rain because 70-90 per cent of rainfall occurs in this season,' IMD DG Mrityunjay Mohapatra said.
'On the real-time rainfall, they can find out whether it is as per the climatological trend or there is a deviation... Accordingly, there could be some decisions concerning agriculture as well as agro-business and industry,' he added.
Based on this information, stakeholders can make informed decisions in agriculture, agro-business, and related industries, IMD DG added.
National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange Limited (NCDEX) and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 26 Jun 2025.
This strategic alliance lays the critical groundwork for the launch of India's first weather derivatives--a long-anticipated market instrument designed to help farmers and allied sectors hedge against climate-related risks such as erratic rainfall, heatwaves, and unseasonal weather events.
With this partnership, NCDEX will develop a rainfall-based derivative product, among others, using historical and real-time datasets sourced from IMD.
These datasets are extensively graded and quality verified, offering high-precision insights that can mimic real-world conditions with statistical accuracy. The weather product to be developed under this collaboration will enable seasonal and location-specific derivative contracts. They shall advance expertise on weather-related risks across agriculture, transportation, and allied industries.

'Mission Mausam': In Bid To Boost Weather Forecasting, IMD Floats Global Tenders For 10 Wind Profilers
The IMD will set up the wind profilers in 10 locations – Amritsar, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Patna, Varanasi, Lucknow, Mohanbari, Bhubaneswar, Calicut, and Thiruvananthapuram Building on its 'Mission Mausam' to sharpen weather forecasts, the IMD has floated a global tender to procure, install and commission 10 wind profiler systems at multiple sites across India. Wind profilers are like advanced doppler radars that provide the deepest coverage of the atmosphere, collecting data on wind speed, direction, and conditions at various levels above the ground. Each system is expected to last for at least 10 years. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has identified 10 locations for the installation – Amritsar, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Patna, Varanasi, Lucknow, Mohanbari (Assam), Bhubaneswar, Calicut, and Thiruvananthapuram spanning the length and breadth of the country. Once installed, these wind profilers will significantly boost India's atmospheric observation network, improving weather forecasting and climate monitoring capabilities nationwide. The data will also be useful for airline planning and detection of turbulence during flight. These typically work by transmitting electromagnetic waves along the device's antenna systems. In its pre-bid security requirements, the tender document – accessed by News18, mandates pre-dispatch inspections, adherence to technical specifications, and compliance with the Centre's 'Make in India' policy. While the deal is open to both Indian and foreign manufacturers, preference will be given to local suppliers, micro and small enterprises as well as startups. A pre-bid conference will be held at the IMD headquarters in New Delhi, with bid submissions to be made exclusively via the government's e-procurement portals. WHAT IS THE RS 2,000-CRORE 'MISSION MAUSAM'? Last September, the central government launched the Rs 2,000 crore 'Mission Mausam' to make India 'weather ready' and 'climate smart' in wake of increasing extreme events, which have made tropical weather far more erratic and harder to predict. As part of the project, the IMD also outlined plans to add vertical wind profiles and radiometers at 15 locations, as well as increase the number of radiosondes from the existing 54. These instruments provide day and night data for wind direction, temperature, and humidity up to an altitude of 12 km, every 15 minutes. According to IMD director-general Dr Mrityunjay Mohapatra, the mission will improve weather forecasting in cities and have better spatial resolution than the existing 12 km. 'This will also enable IMD to issue Nowcast warnings for rains an hour in advance – up from three hours at present," Mohapatra said. With air-conditioned trains, MRTS to be on a par with Metro Rail
After taking over the MRTS network, the Chennai Metro Rail plans to operate air-conditioned trains between Chennai Beach and Velachery. The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has begun preliminary work, and will soon float bids for purchasing air-conditioned train sets for the MRTS network, and for upgrading the stations, sources said. Even if CMRL floats the tenders in a couple of months, it will take at least 18-24 months for the trains to be manufactured and delivered to the city, they added. The trains will likely be operated every seven minutes, and the signalling system will be switched to communications-based train control (the same system to be deployed in CMRL's phase II network), a source said. 'Significant overhaul' 'The State government feels that introducing air-conditioned coaches, improving the frequency, and revamping the stations will be a significant overhaul of the MRTS network, and enhance passenger comfort. The entire ecosystem will change, and monetising the spaces subsequently could fetch revenue. This will take a couple of years,' the source said. When asked if the fare structures would be revised, the sources said a decision would be taken later. Railways will continue to operate the network for two years. The fare structures will be finalised around the time the CMRL takes full control of the operations, the source said. Besides, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to be signed between the Government of Tamil Nadu and Railways is getting ready. The first draft has been completed, and the initial round of discussion with the Railways is under way. If the consensus is reached soon, then, the MoU will be signed before the end of September, officials said. Many commuters are glad about the CMRL's takeover of MRTS, but want the fares to be reasonable. 'Lifts dysfunctional' S. Jayalakshmi, a resident of Adyar who frequently takes the MRTS trains, said, 'Most of us have had faced problems at the MRTS stations, which wear a dingy look. On many occasions, I have seen the lifts and escalators dysfunctional in some stations; the stations also stink sometimes, causing a lot of discomfort.' 'People are set to gain from upgrades such as air-conditioned trains and improved frequency. But the fares should be revised, keeping in mind the poor. Thousands of lower middle-class and the poor use the MRTS system. They can continue to travel if the fares are reasonable,' she added.
