KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. is going to again play for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, and next year certainly will have a bigger role than last time.
Witt announced Thursday that he is committed to playing for the United States and manager Mark DeRosa in the 2026 WBC. It will be Witt's second time on the team.

When part of Team USA in 2023, Witt was 22 and the youngest player on the roster who was coming off a standout rookie MLB season. He was a bench player who went 1 for 2 at the plate, and also was a pinch-runner in the ninth inning of the championship game won by Shohei Ohtani and Japan.
Yankees slugger Aaron Judge, who will be the U.S. captain, and Pirates ace Paul Skenes have also committed to play for Team USA next spring.
'It's truly an honor,' Witt, who turned 25 two weeks ago, told MLB Network. 'It's something I've kinda dreamed about my whole entire life. Just being part of that team a couple years ago was amazing, and now we're going to bring home the gold.'
Witt was the runner-up to Judge in the American League MVP voting last season, when the shortstop led the majors with a .332 batting average. Witt hit .285 with 10 home runs and 40 RBIs in the Royals' first 80 games this year.

DeRose said on MLB Network that he approached Witt during spring training about playing in the 2026 WBC, to which the player responded, '100%. I'm starting, right?'

Auburn will formally retire QB Cam Newton's No. 2 jersey during game against Georgia
AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Auburn will retire 2010 Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton's No. 2 jersey this fall, making him the fourth player in program history to receive the honor. The ceremony will take place during Auburn's home game against rival Georgia on Oct. 11. Newton will join Pat Sullivan (No. 7), Bo Jackson (No. 34) and Terry Beasley (No. 88) as former Tigers football players whose numbers are formally retired. The jerseys of Sullivan and Beasley were retired following Sullivan's 1971 Heisman Trophy season, and Jackson's number was retired as part of Auburn's football centennial celebration in 1992. No one has worn No. 2 at Auburn since Newton and the Tigers beat Oregon in the Bowl Championship Series national title game for the 2010 season. But soon it will be officially out of service. 'Auburn will always be home to me,' Newton said in a statement. 'The national championship we won in 2010 was a special moment, and to have my jersey retired ... is an incredible honor that I'll cherish forever. War Eagle!' One of the most decorated players in Auburn and Southeastern Conference history, Newton led Auburn to conference and national titles with a perfect 14-0 record. He threw for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns while rushing for 1,473 yards and 20 more scores. He became the first player in SEC history to pass for more than 2,000 yards and rush for more than 1,000 yards in a single season. 'Cam Newton not only led Auburn to a national championship in 2010, but he produced one of the most prolific seasons ever by a college football player,' Auburn athletic director John Cohen said. 'Retiring Cam's jersey number is a fitting way to celebrate his lasting impact on Auburn University and Auburn Athletics for all time.' ___

Red Sox signing Nathaniel Lowe for postseason push after shocking release
The race to the top of the AL East didn't stop at the trade deadline. The Boston Red Sox are signing slugging first baseman Nathanial Lowe after he had been designated for assignment by the Nationals last week in favor of younger players, reported. Lowe will join one of the most potent offenses in baseball with Boston in the midst of a tight American League playoff race. 4 Nathaniel Lowe is signing with the Red Sox. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect After losing Tristan Casas earlier in the year to injury and former Red Sox slugger Rafael Devers refusing to step in before being traded to the Giants, Lowe figures to benefit from the opportunity by filling in at first base. Abraham Toro and Remy Gonzalez primarily play first base, but the expectation is that position now turns into a platoon where Lowe gets the lion's share of at-bats against right-handed pitching. Toro had been getting those at-bats, but has fallen off of late and there is speculation he could be DFA'd as part of the move. No official decision has been announced yet, though. 4 Nathanial Lowe was released by the Nationals. Getty Images Lowe was in the midst of a career-worst season with the Nationals, hitting .216 with 16 home runs but still driving in 68 RBIs for one of the league's lowest-rated offenses. 'We feel like we want to see the young kids,' Nationals interim manager and former Yankee Miguel Cairo said after the team decided to release Lowe. 'We have young players, and I think we want to see them play. We want to see what they can do in the last month, month and a half.' Lowe won a Silver Slugger award in 2022 while a member of the Rangers, when he hit 27 home runs with a 302 batting average. 4 Lowe is a former Getty Images Washington has had a mess of a lineup for most of the season, with the lone bright spot being James Wood. They've opted to bring up Robert Hassell III, who was among the prospects sent from San Diego to the Nationals in the Juan Soto trade. That deal has been a boon for the Nationals, who are otherwise bereft of talent, as Washington also received back Wood, Mackenzie Gore and CJ Abrams. 4 Nathaniel Lowe celebrates a home run. MacIntrye and Hatton qualify for Europe's Ryder Cup team. Lowry vs Hojgaard for last automatic spot
VIRGINIA WATER, England (AP) — Robert MacIntyre and Tyrrell Hatton have secured automatic qualification to Europe's Ryder Cup team for next month's matches at Bethpage Black, leaving just one guaranteed place up for grabs. Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood were already sure to be on the team, so captain Luke Donald knows five of his players for the defense of the cup on Sept. 26-28. The sixth and final automatic spot will go to Shane Lowry or Rasmus Hojgaard. Lowry occupies No. 6 place in Europe's points list but could be overtaken by Hojgaard, who has one event left in qualifying — the British Masters starting Thursday. Hojgaard needs to finish in a two-way tie for 29th or better to guarantee his place on the team. Lowry does not have another qualification event. Donald will then have six captain's picks to complete his team. 'Two great characters and golfers back on Team Europe,' Donald posted on X on Monday about MacIntyre and Hatton. 'Team is shaping up nicely.' It will be the Scot's second Ryder Cup appearance. He was part of the winning team at the Marco Simone club outside Rome in 2023. ___
