We put Monos to the test — This luggage is sustainable, sleek and seamless
When traveling, backpacks and carry-on bags can go 'mano a mano' — which is best for a long weekend?
In our case, the Monos Metro backpack and the carry-on bag of the same brand are actually travel besties, working in harmony to get you where you need to go while staying organized the whole way.
Ahead of a long weekend in upstate New York, we wanted to put both bags to the test. As seen in our other luggage review, we packed the larger Béis suitcase to the brim, so being faced with a mini carry-on and a smaller backpack would be a challenge.
Starting with the Monos Metro, the viral bag has been spotted all over TikTok and Instagram, both for the aesthetic look of the sleek leather, but also for its ability to be used as a travel bag one day and an office commuter bag the next.
The carry-on we chose was a delicious one, as it came from the Monos x Magnolia Bakery color collection that came out a few years back.

What is Monos and how does it compare to other brands?
Monos
All luggage brands are not the same. Our staff here at The Post has tried a whole bunch of bags, from Away to Béis, each with something else to offer.
In the case of Monos, a few things stand out. The company places value on simplicity, choice, and sustainability. The streamlined design of their luggage and bags is purposeful, explained on their site as being for the mindful traveller with a timeless approach to luggage.
They also offer a few different choices for fabrics and design, but not too many as to be overwhelming. All their luggage comes in hard-shell, with options for carry-on, carry-on plus, check-in medium, and check-in large. As for materials, they offer luggage made of polycarbonate as well as hybrid bags that also have aluminum for even more durability.
Lastly, to address sustainability, you also need to take a look at the rest of their bags and materials. The Monos Metro backpack has vegan leather as an option, plus their whole operation has net zero carbon emissions and donates 1% of their revenue to non-profits in the environmental space.

Monos' pricing is pretty on par with the other new-wave luggage brands we've seen on the market. You have options for sizing, as seen above, as well as materials, as nylon may cost less than vegan leather and polycarbonates less than aluminum, for example.
The Monos Metro backpack comes in nylon for $215.00, while the vegan leather option we reviewed is $245.00. The Monos hard-side luggage starts at $275.00 typically for the 22-inch carry-on, while the larger check-in bags start at $345.00 and go up to $775.00 for the Large Aluminum Trunk.

Immediately after my return from an international trip, I unpacked and traded in my larger bags for something best built for a weekend away.
This weekend in question was set to rain the entire time, so I was happy to see that both my Monos Carry-on and the Metro Backpack were water-resistant. Since the weekend was with my best girlfriends, I wanted to pack enough outfits and games, but also be sure to have room for anything we may bring home, and of course, have enough room in the trunk to pack it all.
Starting with the Metro Backpack, I immediately fell in love with the color and material, opting for the brown vegan leather. The bag felt soft, like I like my leather to be, but the actual structure of the bag was stiff enough to stand up on its own while I packed. It also felt supportive and protective enough for my belongings, including a padded laptop sleeve and zipper pockets that felt secure.
The backpack could sit both on its side in the car as well as upright when we unpacked at the rental.

My favorite part of the backpack was the QuickSnap Modular Kit System, or the ability to remove the pouch on the front of the backpack and use it as a toiletry bag, tech kit, or whatever else I needed. I kept it on the bag while we drove up, but then detached it with ease when I unpacked, so it could serve as a place to keep my phones and chargers on my nightstand.
The carry-on luggage already got a test drive when I packed for a Marie Kondo article, and so I knew the small bag could really fit a lot, especially when you use packing cubes and tricks. The color is beautiful to look at, which is a perk already, but the matching wheels and interior make it that much more yummy.

Inside the bag is a mesh sleeve compartment, a standard compartment on the other side, and a flat compression sleeve for flat objects and to protect the contents of the bag itself, once you secure the two adjustable straps and tighten them up. I also loved the TSA security lock for the zippers, which can be set easily to a three-digit passcode of your choosing.

I've been to over 20 countries. These 4 popular bucket-list items weren't as glamorous in real life as they looked on social media.
I travel a lot and have learned some experiences aren't as glamorous as they look on social media. Some spots, like LA's Hollywood Boulevard and Hawaii's Mānoa Falls, can get crowded. Although gorgeous, taking a gondola ride in Venice can be expensive. Social media has a way of airbrushing reality, especially when it comes to travel. Many people plan their entire vacations based on viral TikToks and Instagram photo ops, often without realizing what those places are actually like behind the lens. I've been lucky enough to explore over 20 countries, and have been everywhere from the Arctic Circle and the European countryside to the Caribbean. I love snapping photos and curating videos of my adventures along the way, but I'll also admit that social media can make every trip look like a dreamy highlight reel with perfect sunsets, pristine hotel rooms, or bucket-list adventures. Although I'll always be grateful for the chance to see the world, the truth is, not every moment is as glamorous as it looks online. Visiting Hollywood Boulevard isn't as glitzy as it seems. As someone who grew up in the Los Angeles area, I'm incredibly familiar with every tourist hot spot in the city. As a product of the suburbs, I glamorized the idea of visiting Hollywood and immersing myself among those famous sidewalk stars. The truth, though, is that Hollywood Boulevard is packed with crowds, speckled with trash, and has lots of overpriced attractions and gift shops. If you want a good view of the Hollywood sign, I recommend going to Griffith Park Observatory instead. There, you'll get an up-close look at the landmark and sweeping views of LA. Taking a gondola ride in Venice can be expensive. Venice has become one of my favorite cities for its dreamy waterways, cobblestone alleys, and vibrant atmosphere. I've visited over the past two years and have plans to return this summer. Although a gondola ride might seem like a Venice rite of passage, I have a hard time justifying a nearly $100 price tag for a 30-minute ride. It may be worth the splurge if a ride is a must on your itinerary. However, it's also worth looking into the public gondola transfers (aka the traghetto) across the larger waterways that only cost 2 euros (about $2.35). You'll be with a group of people for a short, 3-minute ride, but you can still get a quick snapshot of yourself on the gondola. Mānoa Falls in Honolulu can get crowded. The Mānoa Falls Trail is a lush, 1.6-mile round-trip hike near Honolulu that leads to a 150-foot-tall waterfall. It's a gorgeous trail that I think is worth doing during your visit to Oahu. However, in my experience, it's not as serene as it seems online, and there will likely be crowds gathered at the waterfall's base and the viewpoints throughout. You'll likely have difficulty getting photos without people in the background, especially if they're swimming in the fall's natural pool. I only got a decent picture of myself in front of the waterfall because it started raining and everyone else left. I'd recommend going early in the morning to beat some of the rush, or going on a gloomy day when there might be fewer people on the trail. Also, keep an eye out for outlets along the way to find small and secluded streams. The northern lights are much more vibrant in photos. Don't get me wrong: seeing the northern lights in Iceland was one of the best travel experiences of my life. However, the photos you see online often make them look like a much more saturated version of what they actually look like to the naked eye. More often, the lights are a faint haze of subtle hues. Although photos typically appear more vivid and colorful than the in-person display, watching the colors dance in the sky is awe-inspiring nonetheless.
