High political tension on electricity tariff hike as LoP charges govt with ‘anti-people' move

Leader of Opposition Dr Charandas Mahant led the charge, terming the hike as burdensome and unjustified, while chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai defended the increase, calling it one of the lowest in the country and necessary for the state's energy goals.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Mahant criticized the govt's "anti-people" decision to raise tariffs across all consumer categories, including domestic users, farmers, and small businesses.
Mahant reminded the House that the recent hike was the second tariff increase in just 20 months since the Sai-led govt came to power.
"Nearly six million consumers have been affected. Even farmers are now paying more per unit than industrial units. What kind of govt's priority is this?" Mahant questioned over the electricity tariff hike in the Assembly.

Mahant also pointed to what he described as alarming mismanagement in the power sector.
"Over Rs 8,000 crore in dues are unpaid, Rs 2,500 crore by govt departments and Rs 5,500 crore in subsidies. To make up for this, common citizens are being punished with higher bills," he said.
He also cited repeated fire incidents at power department godowns in Raigarh, Gudhiyari in Raipur, and Bhilai-3 within the last 20 months, calling them indicators of systematic negligence. "Even under the RDS scheme, Rs 3,560 crore was sanctioned by the Centre.

But if the govt doesn't pay its share, the 60% grant will be converted into debt. This is how you plan to develop Chhattisgarh?" he asked.
Adding to his criticism, Mahant said that power cuts, low voltage, and erratic supply were frequent, even at ministerial residences. "What are common citizens supposed to expect?" he asked.
CM's Response
Responding to the notice of adjournment motion, CM Vishnu Deo Sai asserted that the hike was modest and transparent.
"Only a 1.89% rise has been approved for 2025–26. That's among the lowest in the country. For farmers, the 50 paise per unit increase will have zero impact as their bills are already subsidized and paid in advance by the govt," Sai clarified.
He added that domestic consumers will see a mere 10 to 20 paise rise per unit, and that rates for energy-intensive industries, including mini steel plants and rolling mills, have been reduced to boost the manufacturing sector.
Highlighting infrastructure development, Sai announced that a Rs 15,800 crore project for a 1320 MW power plant in Korba is underway.
The CM also shared updates on ongoing improvements in supply and efficiency. "Urban areas are receiving 23.85 hours of electricity per day, rural areas 23.45 hours, and farm feeders 18 hours a day. We have reduced technical and commercial losses from 23.14% to 13.79%, which is a significant achievement," he said.
He further pointed to over Rs 9,400 crore being invested through a Capital Investment Plan for transmission, distribution, and generation upgrades.
Additionally, MoUs worth over Rs 3 lakh crore have been signed to generate employment and enhance energy infrastructure.
Speaker Raman Singh informed the House that adjournment notices were received from 33 members.
However, after the CM's assurance and presentation, he disallowed the notice for motion by the opposition.

In a rare move, LoP Mahant thanked the CM, saying, "At least it seems the govt is taking the matter seriously and CM is looking into it, hence, I am thankful to him."

Parties step up campaign ahead of Bihar Assembly elections
Ahead of Assembly elections in Bihar, which are likely to be held in October–November later this year, political parties have begun finalising schedules and programmes of senior leaders to woo voters. The government aims to develop the site as a religious tourism hub. Similarly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Gaya in the Magadh division, marking his sixth visit to the election-bound State since January this year. From August 13 to 15, Congress ticket aspirants are expected to submit their forms at the party headquarters in Sadaqat Ashram, Patna. Putin says he hopes to meet Trump as White House presses for peace deal on Ukraine
Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday he hopes to meet next week with US President Donald Trump, possibly in the United Arab Emirates. The news came on the eve of a White House deadline for Moscow to show progress toward ending the 3-year-old war in Ukraine. Putin's foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov had said earlier a summit could possibly take place next week at a venue that has been decided 'in principle.' Ushakov brushed aside the possibility of Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joining the summit, something the White House had said Trump was ready to consider. Putin has spurned Zelenskyy's previous offers of a meeting to clinch a breakthrough. 'We propose, first of all, to focus on preparing a bilateral meeting with Trump, and we consider it most important that this meeting be successful and productive,' Ushakov said, adding that US special envoy Steve Witkoff's suggestion of a meeting including Ukraine's leader 'was not specifically discussed.' Putin made the announcement in the Kremlin after his meeting with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the president of the UAE. There was no immediate comment Thursday from the White House and it was unclear how the announcement of the meeting would affect Trump's Friday deadline for Russia to stop the killing or face heavy economic sanctions. Asked who initiated the meeting, Putin said that didn't matter and 'both sides expressed an interest.' Speaking of the possible involvement of Zelenskyy in future talks, Putin said he has mentioned several times that he wasn't against it, adding: 'It's a possibility, but certain conditions need to be created' for it to happen. A ceasefire and long-term security guarantees are priorities in potential negotiation with Russia, he said on social media. Securing a truce, deciding a format for a summit and providing assurances for Ukraine's future protection from invasion — a consideration that must involve the US and Europe — are crucial aspects to address, Zelenskyy said. He noted that Russian strikes on civilians haven't eased off despite Trump publicly urging Putin to relent. Poll shows support for continuing the fight waning in Ukraine A new Gallup poll published Thursday found that Ukrainians are increasingly eager for a settlement that ends the fight against Russia's invasion. The enthusiasm for a negotiated deal is a sharp reversal from 2022 — the year the war began — when Gallup found that about three-quarters of Ukrainians wanted to keep fighting until victory. Now only about one-quarter hold that view, with support for continuing the war declining steadily across all regions and demographic groups. The findings were based on samples of 1,000 or more respondents ages 15 and older living in Ukraine. Some territories under entrenched Russian control, representing about 10 per cent of the population, were excluded from surveys conducted after 2022 due to lack of access. Since the start of the full-scale war, Russia's relentless pounding of urban areas behind the front line has killed more than 12,000 Ukrainian civilians, according to the United Nations. On the 1,000-kilometre front line snaking from northeast to southeast Ukraine, where tens of thousands of troops on both sides have died, Russia's bigger army is slowly capturing more land. Congress Betraying BCs, Shielding Corruption: BJP's Ramchandra Rao
Jangaon: BJP Telangana State President N. Ramchandra Rao launched a sharp attack on the Congress government during a BJP workers' gathering in Jangaon, accusing Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and the Congress leadership of betraying Backward Classes (BCs), committing 420 frauds in the name of six guarantees), shielding corruption, and failing to deliver on promises made before the elections. Addressing party workers on Thursday, Rao demanded clarity from the Congress on whether it would implement the promised 42% reservation for BCs without dilution. 'Instead of giving a straight answer, they're deflecting with comparisons to Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh. We are not against Muslims receiving educational and employment reservations, but political reservations for Muslims will harm BCs,' he said. Rao cited the GHMC elections, where 50 divisions were reserved for BCs, but 35 seats were won by MIM candidates. 'This is a grave injustice to BCs. Congress is now pushing for 10% political reservation for Muslims, which we strongly oppose,' he declared. He criticized the Congress for failing to act on its Kamareddy BC Declaration even after 19 months in power. 'If they were sincere, they would have issued a notification for local body elections immediately after passing the BC reservation bill,' Rao said, adding that the BJP had supported the bill in the Assembly. Taking aim at Revanth Reddy's complaints about not getting an appointment with Prime Minister Modi, Rao said, 'It's Rahul Gandhi who doesn't give him time. Modi ji gave time in the interest of Telangana's development.' Rao also ridiculed the Congress's recent dharna in Delhi, calling it a 'flop show.' 'Rahul Gandhi, the director of the drama, didn't attend. Sonia and Priyanka Gandhi were also absent. They abandoned Telangana during the cropping season to stage a political stunt,' he said. On corruption, Rao accused the Congress of protecting BRS leaders involved in the phone tapping and Kaleshwaram cases. 'Why haven't any politicians been arrested? If Congress is sincere, it should revoke the GO banning CBI entry and allow a full probe. The stolen money should be recovered and deposited in the treasury,' he demanded. Rao alleged that the Congress government is cheating all sections—students, unemployed youth, women, and farmers. 'They've committed 420 frauds in the name of six guarantees. The people will teach them a lesson,' he said. He announced that the BJP will contest nearly all seats in the upcoming local body elections and expressed confidence in a sweeping victory. 'We are the only party that has consistently backed BCs and given them significant representation,' he said. Rao credited the central government for rural development initiatives, including free rice, housing, toilets, gas connections, Rs 5 lakh medical coverage, and loans for women and youth. 'Roads, street lights, graveyards, and Haritha Haram plantations are all being implemented with central funds,' he added. He concluded by asserting that the BJP will emerge as the true alternative to the corrupt Congress and BRS regimes in the 2028 Assembly elections. 'The people of Telangana are ready to bless the BJP. We will not allow injustice to BCs or religious-based reservations to go unchallenged,' Rao affirmed.
