Bengaluru: Two policemen from Indiranagar station have been suspended for allegedly extorting Rs 37,000 from a specially abled man by threatening to implicate him in a fabricated drug case.
A departmental inquiry has been initiated against the duo — constable Parameshwar Nayak and head constable Sharan Basappa Poojari. A senior police officer confirmed the action and said the alleged incident took place on the night of June 14.
According to the complaint, around 11.50pm near a pub on Indiranagar 100ft Road, the victim was waiting for an autorickshaw. Two men on a red motorcycle stopped in front of him, introduced themselves as police officers from Indiranagar station, and began questioning him.

Despite providing satisfactory responses, the victim was frisked and his wallet inspected. "They snatched my phone and asked me to unlock it. After scanning through my WhatsApp messages, one of them said I had to be tested for drugs, and if found positive, I'd be jailed," the complainant said.
The man was then forcibly taken on a triple ride — itself an offence — on the motorbike. They stopped some distance away and continued questioning the man.

The duo allegedly demanded that the victim display his bank balance and demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000, later reducing it to Rs 40,000 after his pleading.
"There was Rs 42,000 in my account. On their instructions, I called a friend and got Rs 10,000 transferred. I first tried to withdraw money from an ATM, but it wasn't working. They then rode to Paramahamsa Yogananda Road and stopped at another ATM, where I withdrew Rs 40,000," the victim recounted.
After handing over the cash, he pleaded with them that he had nothing left. The men then returned Rs 3,000 before speeding away.
Shaken by the experience, the victim approached Broseph Foundation, an NGO that supports individuals in legal distress. The foundation subsequently took up the matter with senior police officers at Indiranagar station.

ED raids in Gujarat, Maharashtra in cyber fraud probe over ₹100 cr scam

The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday conducted searches in Gujarat and Maharashtra as part of a money laundering investigation linked to fraudsters who allegedly committed cyber crimes like digital arrests and transferred funds of more than Rs 100 crore abroad, official sources said. The raids were conducted in Surat and Ahmedabad in Gujarat and in Mumbai by the Surat sub-zonal office of the federal probe agency under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The money laundering case stems from a Gujarat Police FIR against Makbul Doctor, Kaashif Doctor, Bassam Doctor, Mahesh Mafatlal Desai, Maaz Abdul Raheem Nada and some others, the sources said. The accused are alleged to have been involved in cheating general public through various cyber frauds such as fake USDT trading (crypto currency), digital arrests, threatening innocent individuals by sending fake notices of law enforcement agencies etc., they said. The money obtained from gullible persons through this cyber fraud was collected in the bank accounts opened by either using KYC of dummy persons or forging the KYC documents. The illicit funds were converted into crypto currency though various 'Angadiya' or hawala operators and they are suspected to have remitted more than Rs 100 crore funds abroad, the sources said. Designed for 999, holding 3,461: Arthur Road jail holds over 3 times its capacity; jail superintendent flags overcrowding crisis

MUMBAI: The Mumbai Central Prison at Arthur Road is facing an overcrowding crisis, a situation brought to light during a recent court hearing concerning the transfer request of an undertrial prisoner. The jail, designed to hold 999 inmates, currently houses 3,461, more than three times its capacity. The court rejected the application filed by Munaf Halari, accused in the 1993 blasts case, who sought a transfer to the Anda Cell, an egg-shaped cell, due to perceived threats from rival gangs and influential inmates within the general prison population. The court directed the superintendent to provide sufficient security to the accused while keeping him in a different circle. "The superintendent of jail also raises doubt regarding the subsequent conduct of the applicant if he is kept in the high security cell along with other well-known criminals. Therefore, looking to this aspect, I am of the view that if the superintendent of prison is directed to provide sufficient security to the applicant while keeping him in a different circle, then it will sub-serve the purpose," the judge said. Opposing the plea, the jail superintendent highlighted the dire overcrowding, not only in the general prison but also within the high-security cell. The high-security cell, built for 31 prisoners, currently holds 43, including individuals involved in bomb blast cases, terror activities, and high-risk inmates like Prasad Pujari of the Pujari Gang, Uday Pathak of the Pathak gang, and members of the Rajan and Bishnoi gangs. The superintendent submitted that placing the accused in the Anda Cell alongside these high-profile and dangerous individuals could actually increase the threat to his life and security. Instead, he suggested that the accused would be safer if kept in a different circle within the prison, with sufficient security, similar to other co-accused in his case. The court, after reviewing the submissions, acknowledged the concerns regarding overcrowding and the potential risks in the high-security cell. Citing the Maharashtra Prison (Safe Custody of Prisoners) Rules, which mandate the inspector general of prisons or superintendent of jail to ensure the safe custody of prisoners, the court observed that he is best equipped to handle the internal affairs and security arrangements of the prison.

CBI books Chennai firm for cheating bank in Rs 7 crore fraud

CHENNAI: The CBI has registered a case against a Chennai-based company trading in coconut products for cheating Bank of Baroda of Rs 7.55 crore with regard to a loan given to them in 2021. The case was registered on June 17 after getting necessary permissions from the state government as Tamil Nadu had withdrawn general consent to the central agency in 2023. The CBI said it received a complaint from the bank's Chennai regional head that a partnership firm Monica Co Products, established in 2020 by K Pavalabalan and G Palanivel, had taken a loan of Rs 7.6 crore from the bank in September 2021. The firm had mortgaged 23 vacant plots in Adhanoor and Orathoor village as collateral for the loan. However, a preventive vigilance audit in December 2022 and zonal inter departmental audit in July 2023 found the firm had submitted fabricated title deeds and layout plans of all the properties in collusion with Malaivel Sugumaran, a panelled valuer, and C Ramesh, an empanelled advocate. The loan soon turned a non-performing asset in August 2023 due to non-payment of interest. This is when the bank conducted an investigation and declared the account as fraud after a forensic audit, and reported it to the RBI on November 7, 2023. Based on this, CBI registered an FIR under various sections of corruption, fraud, cheating and forgery against Pavalabalan, K Radha, Monica Co Products, Malaivel Sugumaran, C Ramesh and unknown civil servants.
