Two Bengaluru ops suspended for extorting specially abled man
A departmental inquiry has been initiated against the duo — constable Parameshwar Nayak and head constable Sharan Basappa Poojari. A senior police officer confirmed the action and said the alleged incident took place on the night of June 14.
According to the complaint, around 11.50pm near a pub on Indiranagar 100ft Road, the victim was waiting for an autorickshaw. Two men on a red motorcycle stopped in front of him, introduced themselves as police officers from Indiranagar station, and began questioning him.

Despite providing satisfactory responses, the victim was frisked and his wallet inspected. "They snatched my phone and asked me to unlock it. After scanning through my WhatsApp messages, one of them said I had to be tested for drugs, and if found positive, I'd be jailed," the complainant said.
The man was then forcibly taken on a triple ride — itself an offence — on the motorbike. They stopped some distance away and continued questioning the man.

The duo allegedly demanded that the victim display his bank balance and demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000, later reducing it to Rs 40,000 after his pleading.
"There was Rs 42,000 in my account. On their instructions, I called a friend and got Rs 10,000 transferred. I first tried to withdraw money from an ATM, but it wasn't working. They then rode to Paramahamsa Yogananda Road and stopped at another ATM, where I withdrew Rs 40,000," the victim recounted.
After handing over the cash, he pleaded with them that he had nothing left. The men then returned Rs 3,000 before speeding away.
Shaken by the experience, the victim approached Broseph Foundation, an NGO that supports individuals in legal distress. The foundation subsequently took up the matter with senior police officers at Indiranagar station.

UAE: Sharjah Police release actual video showing man hit by car while crossing road to warn public
Image: X In a move to curb rising pedestrian accidents, Sharjah Police have released a striking video that captures a fatal collision between a car and a pedestrian crossing recklessly. This comes as the UAE enforces stricter penalties for jaywalking under a new federal traffic law effective March 29, 2025. The authorities emphasize that unsafe crossing habits threaten lives and urge everyone to prioritize road safety by using designated pedestrian areas. Video highlights fatal consequences of reckless crossing Sharjah Police shared a video showing a tragic accident where a man attempts to cross the road at a pedestrian crossing but does so while the vehicle signal remains green. Despite crossing within the designated area, the pedestrian runs across recklessly, ignoring the traffic signal, which leads to a collision with an oncoming car and the loss of his life. The footage serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed when pedestrians prioritize speed over safety. Authorities stress that many accident reports stem from unsafe crossing behavior, reinforcing the message that even a few seconds saved by rushing can have devastating consequences, not just for the individual but also their families and the wider community. New federal traffic law introduces harsher penalties for Jaywalking The UAE introduced a new federal traffic law on March 29, 2025, imposing tougher penalties on jaywalking to deter dangerous pedestrian behavior. Previously, the fine for jaywalking was Dh400. However, under the new regulation: If jaywalking results in a traffic accident, offenders face fines between Dh5,000 and Dh10,000, and may be subject to imprisonment. For crossing from undesignated areas on roads where the speed limit is 80 km/h or higher, penalties increase sharply: A minimum fine of Dh10,000 Imprisonment of at least three months Or both penalties can be applied. These stringent measures highlight the government's commitment to improving road safety and reducing pedestrian accidents, especially in high-speed zones where risks multiply. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? Modified Your Bullet To Make This Kind Of Sound? Over 4,000 Riders Fined In Mumbai
In 2024, Mumbai Traffic Police cracked down on noisy bikes, issuing 4,189 e-challans and collecting fines worth Rs 41.89 lakh, highlighting the gravity of the problem In Mumbai, residents are grappling with sleepless nights and rising accidents as motorcycles fitted with silencers that sound like firecrackers continue to roar through the streets despite repeated police warnings. In 2024, the Mumbai Traffic Police launched a special campaign to address this issue, targeting two-wheeler riders who flouted the rules. During the campaign, a total of 4,189 e-challans were issued, and fines amounting to Rs 41,89,000 were collected, underscoring the severity of the problem. Police took strict action against offenders, seizing and crushing thousands of silencers that mimic firecracker sounds under a road roller to prevent their reuse. In cases where fines remained unpaid, court notices were issued directly to the vehicle owners. Under the Motor Vehicles Act 198, vehicle modifications that violate regulations attract a minimum fine of Rs 1000, and in some cases, criminal charges are filed. What Makes The Danger Worse The noise from such silencers is not just irritating but also harmful to health. Constant exposure puts strain on the ears, with the elderly and children most affected. The risk of accidents rises sharply when riders combine these silencers with stunts or high-speed turns. Such bikes are often seen in large numbers during festival rallies, where the deafening noise troubles citizens and causes other drivers to lose balance on the road. Noisy bikes tearing through busy Mumbai areas late at night or early in the morning are instantly recognizable. They cause disturbed sleep, distract students, and add to the discomfort of patients. The problem is felt most acutely in sensitive zones such as hospitals, schools, and residential colonies. Ongoing Police Crackdown The Mumbai Police continue to act against violators, with no exemptions for those using such silencers for style or hobby. The police have indicated plans to intensify their efforts in the future. What Citizens Can Do Citizens are encouraged to report sightings of two-wheelers with 'firecracker' silencers to the traffic police and adhere to vehicle regulations themselves. Under the Motor Vehicles Act, illegal modifications result in fines, and severe cases may lead to criminal charges. view comments First Published: August 18, 2025, 11:38 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
