Manny Pacquiao's opponent ready for ‘backlash' if he sends Filipino icon back into retirement
Pacquiao, an eight-division world champion, has faced heavy criticism for making a comeback after a four-year retirement, now 46. If he wins against Barrios, it will make him one of boxing 's oldest world champions ever.
But Barrios is not fazed by facing a legend of the sport or any 'backlash' he may receive for forcing Pacquiao back into retirement.
Barrios explained to The Ring: 'I'm ready to get backlash if I retire him – it comes with it. Any fighter in my division would be more than happy to take this fight as well. It's just my job to go in there and do what I do best.'
In his prime, Pacquiao was affectionately named the 'Mexecutioner' for his impressive record against some of the greatest Mexican fighters of his generation – he claimed wins over Antonio Margarito, Juan Manuel Marquez, Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera.
Coming from a proud Mexican heritage, Barrios does not plan to be next on the long list of Mexicans to fall at the hands of 'Pac-Man'.
Barrios said: 'He's beaten a lot of Mexican fighters before, but he hasn't faced a Mexican fighter like me. Every time I step in the ring, I represent my Mexican roots and indigenous roots very proudly.'
The WBC champion added that he is preparing for a prime Pacquiao and is not taking his age or inactivity for granted. Although his intentions are not to go in there to retire an icon like Pacquiao, but he has to defend his belt by any means necessary.
Barrios said: 'I'm preparing as if I am fighting a prime Manny. He's a legend for a reason. He's still dangerous. It's my job to go in there and defend my title. I am expecting the best version of many regardless.'
He concluded: 'Maybe I am going to be the one who retires him. That's not what my goal is in there. I just want to make sure I go home with my strap. A name like Manny is huge for my resume.'

Freddie Freeman remains hot as Dodgers beat Rays
August 3 - Freddie Freeman had three hits and drove in a run as the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-0 in the rubber match of a three-game series on Sunday. Yoshinobu Yamamoto (10-7) allowed five hits with no walks and six strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. Alex Vesia and Brock Stewart followed before the Rays loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth against Blake Treinen. Ben Casparius replaced Treinen and got Yandy Diaz to ground out for his second save. Junior Caminero and Jake Magnum had two hits apiece for Tampa Bay, which was shut out for the 10th time this season and lost for the fifth time in its last six games. Ohtani had two hits and reached base four times with two stolen bases for Los Angeles, which recorded their fifth shutout and concluded their nine-game road trip with a 5-4 record. The Dodgers were held to three hits over the first five scoreless innings by Joe Boyle, who walked two and struck out two. Mason Englert (0-1) replaced Boyle to begin the sixth inning and allowed a leadoff single to Freeman, who moved to second on Michael Conforto's one-out walk. Andy Pages followed with a single to left field and Freeman beat the throw to the plate, ending the Dodgers' 18-inning scoreless streak. Los Angeles tacked on another run in the seventh inning after Ohtani hit a leadoff single and stole second base. Mookie Betts walked and both runners advanced on a double steal before Freeman singled in a run. Freeman has reached base in 19 straight games and is batting .396 (19-for-48) with two home runs and 12 RBIs in his last 12 games. He drove in four of the Dodgers' eight runs in the weekend series. The Rays threatened in the fifth inning with runners on the corners with one out. Yamamoto escaped the jam when Diaz popped out and Brandon Lowe struck out. Los Angeles added an insurance run in the ninth on Betts' sacrifice fly against Griffin Jax, who was making his Rays debut. Los Angeles second baseman Tommy Edman exited the game in the fifth inning with a right ankle sprain after hitting a one-out single. --Field Level Media

Colts star Salvon Ahmed rushed to the hospital after illegal tackle by teammate in practice
Colts running back Salvon Ahmed had to be carted off the field and taken to the hospital after he was the victim of an illegal hip-drop tackle in practice. Ahmed screamed in pain after the tackle by teammate Trey Washington in the end zone on Sunday. It has been reported that the running back's right ankle was stuck in an 'awkward position'. The 26-year-old was put on a stretcher, while his teammates gathered around him, took a knee, and said a prayer. Ahmed was then taken to the hospital for X-rays amid fears over a serious injury to his lower right leg. Hip-drop tackles were banned last season due to the number of injuries they can cause. Washington, an undrafted free agent, was said to be 'down in the dumps' after hurting his teammate. 'You never want to see that happen,' Colts head coach Shane Steichen said. 'I know we don't encourage hip-drop tackles. 'I know Trey's down in the dumps, and I don't think he's trying to do that. We're just trying to create an edge... those (backups) are going to have to tackle come preseason.' Steichen added: 'I think training camp is where you want to create the edge and the toughness and the identity of your football team, so you have live periods.' Ahmed is a five-year veteran of the NFL who played 38 games for the Miami Dolphins between 2020 and 2023. Following his injury on Sunday, Indianapolis briefly stopped training camp to huddle before finishing its final practice period of the day. 'There's guys out here that need those reps to compete and get better,' linebacker Zaire Franklin, a long-time friend of Ahmed, said per ESPN. 'We're trying to be the best team that we can be so we can win. We've got to keep pushing ourselves.' Steichen added: 'There's a lot of thoughts going on in my head during that situation. I talked to some of the leaders on the team. We wanted to get that last 2-minute situation in. Felt that we needed that. They were on board with that.'

Las Vegas Raiders safety Lonnie Johnson Jr breaks his leg after brutal collision with Maxx Crosby in practice
Raiders safety Lonnie Johnson Jr. broke his right leg during a mock game in Las Vegas practice on Saturday, according to multiple reports. Johnson, 29, was carted off the field after colliding brutally with defensive end Maxx Crosby while attempting to tackle running back Raheem Mostert. The six-year pro will reportedly undergo an MRI exam to determine if there is any additional damage. Depending on the severity of the injury, including if surgery is required, recovery could range anywhere from 10 weeks to six months. After his suffering the devastating injury, he took to X on Saturday and wrote: 'Imma soldier [on] chin up chest out - God got me'. Johnson signed as a free agent with Las Vegas this year after playing last season in Carolina, putting pen to paper on a one-year contract. He started once for the Panthers and played in 15 games, making seven tackles. #Raiders safety Lonnie Johnson Jr. left the team's mock game on a cart. Competing to be a starter, the six-season veteran who signed with Las Vegas this offseason had his ankle rolled up on by Maxx Crosby on this play. — Nick Walters (@nickwalt) August 2, 2025 The former Kentucky college star has also played for the New Orleans Saints, Tennessee Titans and Houston Texans, racking up 20 career starts with 199 tackles, 15 passes defended and four interceptions over the course of his career. He has been competing on the second team in practices for Las Vegas, but has been with the starters when they have gone to nickel defenses. The Raiders, who are co-owned by legendary quarterback Tom Brady, play their first preseason game on Thursday August 7 against the Seattle Seahawks. After more preseason outings against the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals, they begin the 2025 NFL season away to the New England Patriots. Home fixtures against the Los Angeles Chargers and Chicago Bears, as well as road trips to the Washington Commanders and Indianapolis Colts, make up their first five games of the year. Ahead of the new season, Brady was seen mingling with Raiders players - including star tight end Brock Bowers - in a shock appearance at training camp this week. It was his first public appearance at practice since NFL owners last year approved his bid to become a minority owner in the team. Brady and his partner Tom Wagner own 10 percent of the Raiders, with the seven-time Super Bowl winner holding a 5 percent stake in the franchise.
