Elon Musk returns to his tech empire, as workers and investors demand answers
Elon Musk
has reemerged at the helm of his sprawling tech empire after months spent in Washington as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (
DOGE
) under President Donald Trump. Once the face of futuristic innovation, Musk became entangled in politics, leading to growing concerns over his prolonged absence from companies like
Tesla
,
SpaceX
, xAI, and X (formerly Twitter). Now back in his factories and data centers, Musk dons his old 'Occupy Mars' T-shirt—but questions remain: is he too late to repair the damage?
Elon Musk's dual identity: From business titan to political power player
During his political stint, Musk was a close ally of President Trump, often referred to as his 'first buddy.' He played a central role in executing controversial budget cuts and regulatory rollbacks, especially those affecting green energy. While these moves served the administration's agenda, they alienated many of Musk's core supporters and business partners, especially in the electric vehicle (EV) market.

Musk's political presence coincided with a major downturn for Tesla. As government subsidies for EVs came under threat and Trump imposed new tariffs, Tesla's stock value dropped by roughly 14%, wiping out around $180 billion in market capitalization. Dealerships became protest sites, and morale across the company fell sharply.
SpaceX faces internal strain amid CEO's absence
SpaceX, once energized by Musk's constant presence and visionary leadership, has struggled in his absence. Employees reported declining morale, with one former mechanic posting publicly: 'Your presence used to drive a fire in the team… Please come back and walk the floor.' Despite two Starship test launches during his time away, employee sentiment suggested that motivation had diminished without Musk at the helm.
Musk's sparse engagement with Tesla operations
Musk reportedly visited Tesla's Palo Alto office just days before an earnings call, asking questions about Trump's tariffs—despite the policies being announced months earlier. Internally, executives were concerned about Musk's declining engagement, with some meetings attended by phone and others missed entirely. A board member allegedly stepped in to fill leadership gaps, according to insiders.
AI and xAI: The only active focus during Musk's political phase
While Tesla and SpaceX suffered from lack of attention, Musk remained active with xAI, his artificial intelligence company. He heavily promoted its chatbot, Grok, posting frequently on X. In March 2025, Musk merged X and xAI, forming a mega tech entity valued at $113 billion, according to internal documents tied to an upcoming tender offer.
Telegram partnership sparks confusion and power play
Last month, Musk and Telegram's founder Pavel Durov teased a partnership that would bring Grok to Telegram's billion+ users. However, Musk later contradicted the announcement, stating: 'No deal has been signed.' This public contradiction hinted at internal misalignment and reaffirmed that Musk still holds the final word in his empire—even if communication is murky.
Leadership vacuum: Workers, investors demand more than symbolism
As Musk posted selfies from SpaceX's control room and claimed to be sleeping in factory floors again, employees and investors began demanding more than photo ops. Public posts and internal sources alike indicate a desire for Musk to be truly present—leading strategy, boosting morale, and navigating global economic pressures.

Elon Musk- Donald Trump Feud Live Updates: 'Elon Musk could face 'serious consequences' if he backs Democratic candidates ,' says Trump
US President Donald Trump on Saturday warned Elon Musk of 'serious consequences' if the billionaire backs efforts to unseat Republicans who support a controversial government spending bill. The sharp remarks, made to NBC News, followed a dramatic and very public unravelling of their once-close relationship. The fallout began after Musk, formerly one of the GOP's biggest donors, fiercely criticized Trump's proposed 'big, beautiful' spending package currently under debate in Congress. Some conservative lawmakers opposed to the bill urged Musk to fund primary challenges against Republican legislators who back the legislation. In response, Trump lashed out: 'He'll have to pay very serious consequences if he does that,' calling Musk 'disrespectful' and ruling out any future reconciliation. 'I have no intention of speaking to him,' the president added. The split comes just days after Trump had praised Musk for his work at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), from which he recently stepped down. But tensions escalated rapidly when Musk slammed the spending bill as an 'abomination,' prompting an angry reaction from Trump during an Oval Office outburst. Although both appeared to soften their tone slightly on Friday—Trump saying 'I just wish him well,' and Musk replying 'Likewise' on X—the damage appears far from repaired. Adding fuel to the fire, Musk had earlier made a now-deleted post alleging Trump appeared in unreleased government documents related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The explosive claim was scrubbed from Musk's account before Trump's latest interview. While Trump has been named in unsealed court documents tied to the Epstein case, there are no allegations of wrongdoing against him. The White House has confirmed an ongoing review of thousands of files connected to Epstein, which Trump's MAGA supporters claim will reveal names of powerful figures involved in the scandal.

FBI Director Kash Patel wants to ‘stay out of Trump-Elon thing', says ‘I know my lane…'
FBI Director Kash Patel preferred to stay out of the 'Trump-Elon' thing after the tech billionaire made bold claims on Thursday that US President Donald Trump was 'in the Jeffrey Epstein files'. According to a New York Post report, Patel was in the middle of a two-hour interview on the 'Joe Rogan Experience' podcast when Musk made these claims. 'I'm not participating in any of that conversation between Elon and Trump,' a surprised Patel said after learning of the shocking statement made by the world's richest man. As soon as Rogan learned of Musk's statement, he asked Kash Patel, 'Jesus Christ! That's a crazy thing to say. How does he know? Does he know that Donald Trump is in the Epstein files? Or does he have access to the Epstein files?' Responding to Rogan, according to the report, Patel said that he didn't 'know he would' know anything about the contents of the Epstein files, but declined to speak further about the feud. 'I'm just staying out of the Trump-Elon thing; that's way outside my lane,' he said. 'I know my lane, and that ain't it.' The dramatic rupture between the US President and the world's richest man began this week with Musk's public criticism of Trump's 'big beautiful bill' pending on Capital Hill. Musk has warned that the bill will increase the federal deficit and called it a 'disgusting abomination'. Trump criticised Musk in the Oval Office, and before long, he and Musk began trading bitterly personal attacks on social media, sending the White House and GOP congressional leaders scrambling to assess the fallout. As the back-and-forth intensified, Musk suggested Trump should be impeached and claimed without evidence that the government was concealing information about the president's association with infamous pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. "Time to drop the really big bomb: (Trump) is in the Epstein files," Musk posted on his social media platform, X. 'That is the real reason they have not been made public,' he wrote. He initially doubled down on the claim, writing in a follow-up message: "Mark this post for the future. The truth will come out." Musk appeared by Saturday morning to have deleted his posts about Epstein. According to the New York Post report, Patel had discussed the pending release of surveillance video taken of Epstein's Manhattan jail cell that proves the convicted child sex trafficker killed himself in August 2019. Speculations have been rife since Epstein's death that he was killed by someone afraid he would expose sex crimes of prominent figures in politics and finance whose friendship he had cultivated over several decades. 'I'm not saying every single camera in the place was working,' Patel told Rogan. 'I'm saying we've got footage and you're getting it, and then you can make up your own mind." Democrats sent a letter to Patel on Thursday requesting the complete unsealing of the investigative file into Epstein, the report said. 'We write with profound alarm at allegations that files relating to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have not been declassified and released to the American public because they personally implicate President Trump,' Reps. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) and Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.) wrote in their letter. 'We ask that you immediately clarify whether this allegation is true and respond to this letter with the requested information and documentation.' In February this year, the US Justice Department released Jeffrey Epstein's address book, featuring a range of celebrities and politicians. However, the Justice Department clarified that the list is a contact list, 'not a client list'. The list includes Michael Jackson, actor Alec Baldwin, Mick Jagger, Naomi Campbell, Courtney Love and Robert F Kennedy Jr's mother, Ethel Kennedy. Though the names were revealed in the files, the Justice Department withheld their addresses and contact information, the report added. Other high-profile celebrities and political figures on the contact list include Bob Weinstein, the brother of Harvey Weinstein; David Koch; late Sen Ted Kennedy; actor Ralph Fiennes; Kerry Kennedy; lawyer Alan Dershowitz; John Kerry; actor Dustin Hoffman; businessman Jon Huntsman; Ivana Trump, Ivanka Trump; and model Liz Hurley. The president's name was not on the contact list. The millionaire financier, who socialised with royalty and celebrities, was accused of running a large network of underage girls for sex. While awaiting trial, he killed himself in his jail cell in 2019.

'If he does, he'll have to pay the consequences for that,' NBC News quoted Trump as saying. However, the US President didn't reveal what those consequences would be. New Twist In Musk And Trump Fight Trum and Musk's friendship deteriorated after the richest man in the world departed from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which aimed at reducing the government's expenses. DOGE had made noticeable progress in reducing governmental spending until Musk broke ties with the Trump administration and started openly criticising him on social media platforms. Friendship 'Over'? As per NBC, President Trump clearly said that he has no desire to fix his deteriorating relationship with Musk after their feud became public for a week. Responding to whether his friendship with SpaceX CEO is over, he responded 'I would assume so, yeah.' On Thursday, Trump voiced his frustration with Musk's opposition to his proposed 'big, beautiful bill', noting Musk's prior familiarity with the bill's details.
