Max Dowman's behaviour jumps out as Arsenal wonderkid's character comes to light

Daily Mirror2 days ago
Arsenal prospect Max Dowman has impressed during the club's pre-season tour and one of his former academy coaches has highlighted the personality trait that set him apart from his team-mates
Arsenal starlet Max Dowman's character stood out from his team-mates even during his early days at the club's academy. Dowman has been a breakout star during the Gunners' pre-season tour, despite being just 15 years old.

The attacking midfielder is the only one of the several unproven youngsters in manager Mikel Arteta's pre-season squad to have featured in all three of the side's friendlies. Dowman made his first team debut in a win over AC Milan before impressing against Newcastle United and earning the winning penalty.

He replaced Bukayo Saka in Arsenal's recent defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, apt considering Dowman's behaviour has drawn comparisons to the Hale End graduate. Former Arsenal academy coach Temisan Williams previously worked with Dowman and highlighted a moment that summed up his humble personality.

'When I left Arsenal, Max was one of the few players who personally said to me, 'Thank you for everything you've done for me, how you've helped me, what I've learned from you and I wish you all the best,'' Williams recalled to Sky Sports. 'I always remember this – and these behaviours are recognised by coaches in players.
'He was just a very measured young man, definitely mature beyond his years, even when you were talking with him one-on-one. Whenever you're talking to him, he'd look into your eyes and he'd really want to understand.
''What is it that you want me to know, what is it you want me to do, how are you going to help me, how is this going to help my development?''
Dowman has clearly heeded all advice from his coaches as he continues to excel above his age group, having been called up to train with Arteta's side in November. He scored 15 goals in as many league games for Arsenal's under-18s side last season, as well as becoming the youngest-ever goalscorer in the U19 UEFA Youth League, aged 14.
However, despite his eye for goal and talent for dribbling with the ball, Dowman's approach to his team-mates most impressed Williams, a quality that has likely helped him adapt during his step up into the first team.

'He was a brilliant team-mate,' Williams explained. 'I always look at when things are going wrong in development football – when things aren't coming off for players and they're maybe frustrated, losing, all that type of stuff.
'I'd look at Max's reaction, he would always be encouraging his team-mates. You'd never see him dig out a player in a very rash way or complain at players. I'm sure if you asked anyone who's trained and played with him through the academy, they'd probably echo the same sentiments.'
Arsenal boss Arteta showed willingness to integrate academy prospects into his title-chasing squad last season, with Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri becoming first-team regulars. Dowman is in the pre-season squad alongside 15-year-old Marli Salmon, 17-year-old striker Andre Harriman-Annous and other youngsters, becoming the latest academy stars on the verge of a breakthrough.

Discussing Dowman's display against Newcastle, Arteta said: 'It is special. What he's done today against this team in the time that he had on the pitch, it is something certainly not common to witness for a 15-year-old. We are extremely happy to have him.'
It remains to be seen whether Dowman will continue to link up with the senior side once the season gets underway, given his lack of experience at Premier League 2 level. However, his former coach Williams has little doubt about the levels Dowman could reach in the future.
' Champions League, World Cup, Premier League,' Williams concluded. 'He's got all the capabilities; he's got the mentality. Mikel Arteta wouldn't bring him into the fold at that age if he didn't.'

Thomas Partey set to join new club two days before appearing in court over rape charges

Thomas Partey is due to pen a two-year deal with Villarreal after seeing his Arsenal contract expire as the Ghanaian also prepares to appear in court after being hit with several charges Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey is due to join Villarreal this summer after his contract at the Emirates expired, leaving him free to seek pastures new. The 32-year-old Ghanaian has undergone a medical and is expected to sign a two-year deal with the Spanish club, which will see him play with the Yellow Submarine until 2027. It will mark his return to La Liga having played there during his Atletico Madrid days. Partey was keen to remain in the Champions League and that was a major factor in him choosing Villarreal, who finished fifth in Spain last term. The midfielder had been linked with moves to clubs in Europe and the Middle East throughout the season. The Athletic reported that the ex-Atletico man was in talks over staying at the Emirates but an agreement could not be reached on the terms of a deal despite the two parties trying until late in the day. Partey joined the club from Atletico for £45million back in 2020 and has been part of their rise to title challengers under Mikel Arteta. All in all he made 167 appearances for Arsenal, scoring nine goals, including one in a north London derby win. Shortly after the Ghanaian's Arsenal exit was confirmed he was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. He denies all charges. He had been the subject of an investigation that began in February 2022. He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on Tuesday August 5. Arteta was asked for his reaction to the news of Partey's charges and said: "The club was very clear in its statement. There are a lot of legal matters that are very complicated so I cannot comment on any of that. Quizzed further on whether he was confident the club has followed the right process he replied: "100%." Arsenal have made several additions in the middle of the pitch with Martin Zubimendi among their key signings. The Spanish midfielder joins from Real Sociedad after being on the club's radar 12 months ago and will assist the likes of Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard. Christian Norgaard has also joined from Brentford with the Dane adding more depth to the team's midfield options. Arteta has also captured more firepower in Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon and Noni Madueke from Chelsea. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Former Milan captain Baresi undergoes lung surgery, says recovery underway

Aug 3 (Reuters) - Former AC Milan and Italy defender Franco Baresi is recovering well after undergoing surgery to remove a pulmonary nodule, the Serie A club confirmed on Sunday. The honorary vice president and former captain for Milan underwent a routine medical check which revealed the issue and will undergo oncological recovery therapy with immunotherapy. "Dear fans, I just want to let you know that it will take me a little time to get back to full strength," Baresi said in a statement. The 65-year-old Baresi is regarded as an icon at San Siro, having spent his entire 20-year career with the club and captaining the team for 15 seasons before retiring in 1997. He was part of the Italy squad that won the 1982 World Cup and captained the team to the 1994 final, which ended in a narrow penalty shootout loss to Brazil.

Thomas Partey 'set to join LaLiga side' as free agent - despite ex-Arsenal star facing rape charges

Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey will reportedly return to LaLiga after departing the north London club as a free agent at the end of last season. Last month, Partey, 32, was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. He is accused of attacking three women between 2021 and 2022. His charges, which followed a three-year investigation by Scotland Yard, arrived just five days after he left Arsenal on June 30. Partey denies the allegations and will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London on Tuesday, August 5. Amid these legal proceedings, Partey has reportedly undergone a medical at Villarreal, and is set to join the Spanish club on a two-year deal, according to The Athletic. After finishing fifth in La Liga last term, Villarreal will play in the Champions League in 2025-26, which is said to have been a motivating factor behind Partey's decision to join. Partey spent five seasons at the Emirates, having playing in the Spanish top-flight for Atletico Madrid before joining the Gunners. He made 167 appearances under Mikel Arteta. Partey was accused of two counts of rape related to one woman and three counts of rape related to a second woman. The one count of sexual assault relates to a third woman. None of the alleged victims can be named. The Crown Prosecution Service has said the charges came after it 'carefully reviewed a comprehensive file of evidence'. Partey 'denies all the charges against him' and 'welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name', his lawyer said in early July. The Metropolitan Police said the investigation into Partey began in February 2022 after officers first received a report of rape. He was first arrested in July 2022, though he was not named at the time and continued to play for Arsenal while investigations were ongoing. He played more than 50 games for Arsenal while on bail, it has emerged. In a statement, his lawyer Jenny Wiltshire, of Hickman and Rose, said: 'Thomas Partey denies all the charges against him. 'He has fully cooperated with the police and CPS throughout their three-year investigation. He now welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name. 'Given that there are now ongoing legal proceedings, my client is unable to comment further.' Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, whose team is leading the investigation, said: 'Our priority remains providing support to the women who have come forward.
