Scam alert: Police warn of syndicates targeting RM100 SARA aid, urge public not to share personal data
Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said authorities expect these syndicates to become active again, targeting the public to obtain personal and banking information under the guise of verifying aid eligibility.
These syndicates typically impersonate government agency representatives by contacting victims through fake messages or phishing links that appear official, sent via SMS, WhatsApp, or phone calls.
'Once the criminals obtain details such as bank account numbers, identity card numbers or OTP codes, they will access the victim's account and transfer funds without the victim's knowledge,' he said when contacted today.
Although no police reports have been received so far involving scams linked to the programme, the authorities take seriously the potential for exploitation by irresponsible parties targeting vulnerable groups.
As such, Rusdi advised the public to remain vigilant and never share any personal or financial information with unknown individuals.
'Do not easily trust calls, messages, or links claiming to be from government agencies offering assistance. Never click on suspicious links or enter personal information on unverified websites,' he said.
Rusdi added that all matters relating to government aid, such as the SARA programme, should only be referred through official channels, including ministry or agency websites managing the aid.
'The public is also advised to carefully check application terms, eligibility and implementation details before taking any action,' he said.
He noted that a small mistake like sharing an OTP code could lead to losses, and urged the public to only seek accurate and updated information through official government portals or recognised mainstream media.
On July 23, Anwar announced a one-off RM100 cash aid for all Malaysians aged 18 and above via their MyKad under the SARA programme, involving a RM2 billion allocation benefiting 22 million people.
The assistance can be used from Aug 31 to Dec 31, 2025 and is aimed at easing the people's cost of living. — Bernama

AKPS nabs Indian national trying to smuggle 2,500 turtles through KLIA
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) intercepted a wildlife smuggling operation at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, seizing over 2,500 live turtles valued at RM348,000 from an Indian passenger attempting to board a flight to Bengaluru last night. The suspect, who was scheduled to board a flight to Bengaluru, India, was detained at 10.05pm at the departure gate during a routine security operation. Acting on intelligence information, enforcement officers from AKPS KLIA and Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel conducted a scan of the suspect's luggage which revealed suspicious images. JPJ seizes four luxury cars including Mercedes S400 a China national drove with no insurance for a year
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) seized four luxury vehicles, including a Mercedes-Benz and a Toyota Vellfire, without valid insurance and road tax during an operation in Shah Alam last night. The seizures took place during a five-hour enforcement effort called 'Ops Pengarah' that began at 8.30pm at the Kota Kemuning Toll Plaza along the Kesas Expressway, the New Straits Times reported. JPJ officers first stopped a Mercedes-Benz S400 driven by a 41-year-old woman from China. Checks revealed that the car had been without valid road tax or insurance for over a year. The woman, who is married to a Malaysian, was also driving without a valid licence. In another case, a 25-year-old Malaysian man was found driving a Toyota Vellfire MPV with expired road tax. He claimed that his brother had purchased the vehicle three months ago by taking over the hire-purchase instalments from the previous owner. The man added that he had asked the original owner to renew the road tax, but was told this could not be done due to unresolved summonses. Both drivers had to book e-hailing rides home after JPJ officers impounded their vehicles on the spot. Selangor RTD director Azrin Borhan said 16,735 cases of unlicensed driving and 25,338 road tax-related offences were recorded from January to July this year. Yesterday, a transport safety group alleged that luxury vehicle owners often opt to forego obtaining insurance and road tax as it was cheaper to pay the RM300 fine each time they were caught.

Man dumps Mercedes after fatal crash with teen motorcyclist in Seremban (VIDEO)
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — Police are searching for a man who abandoned his Mercedes-Benz car that was involved in a crash that killed a 17-year-old motorcyclist in Seremban. The accident happened at about 6.45am yesterday along Jalan Temiang, near Simpang Bukit Jong, Seremban district police chief ACP Mohamad Hatta Che Din said. According to Mohamad Hatta, the Mercedes-Benz driver lost control and crashed into the oncoming motorcycle, causing a fatal head-on collision. The teenager, who was reportedly on his way to work at a nearby petrol station, died on the spot due to severe head injuries. Mohamad Hatta said the driver then fled the scene, leaving his car behind. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. Police are calling for witnesses or anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist the investigation.
