‘Chicken bone' influencers freed on police bail

SEREMBAN: Three young friends who had been remanded on Tuesday to assist in investigations for giving rice with chicken bones to a homeless man have been released on police bail. Seremban OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Hatta Che Din said the three aged 19,18 and 14 were brought here from Johor Baru on Tuesday to be remanded. "They have been released after their statements were recorded. "The three are from Johor Baru but the incident happened here," he said. ACP Mohamad Hatta said the three were being probed under Section 504 of the Penal Code, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988. In a video clip that went viral, the trio, believed to be influencers, were first seen eating at a fast food restaurant and then placing chicken bones in a pack of rice. They then hand it to a homeless man who was sleeping on the sidewalk. The man appeared shocked after opening the packet but responded with a simple gesture of thanks. Following backlash from netizens, the trio later issued an apology. They claimed the man had been informed about the filming beforehand and had consented to it. They also claimed that they had given him a full meal of chicken with rice earlier. On Tuesday (Aug 5), the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in a statement said it had questioned the three over the matter. It said the trio had their statements recorded at Iskandar Puteri police headquarters in Johor. The MCMC had also seized three mobile phones and SIM cards from the three. The commission described the video as "extremely offensive" and said the actions of the three youth had sparked criticism and touched on sensitive matters.

Arunkumar, 36, nodded in understanding after the charge was read out to him before Magistrate Norshazwani Ishak. However, no plea was recorded from the accused, who was unrepresented, as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court. The e-hailing driver was charged with killing the boy between 9.02 am and 12.55 pm on July 23, under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or a maximum of 40 years imprisonment and 12 strokes of the cane, if convicted. Kepong MP questions how man with 44 criminal records still roamed free before fatal KL shootout

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 6 — Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng today questioned how a man with 44 criminal records was still roaming freely in the city before being shot dead by police in an early morning shootout on Jalan Bukit Tunku. The suspect, a 36-year-old believed to be the mastermind of a robbery and housebreaking gang, was killed during a reported shootout when police intercepted his BMW at 4.10am. Lim said while he fully supported the swift and decisive action by the police, the real concern was how someone with a long history of criminal offences, including drug cases, could still pose a danger to public safety. 'Clearly, our enforcement and judicial systems are failing if serial offenders can continue to threaten the public without any restrictions,' he said in a statement. According to police, the suspect had been linked to break-ins and robberies in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Perak since last year, involving losses exceeding RM1 million. Burglary tools and other items are displayed at the scene of a police shooting in Bukit Tunku, Kuala Lumpur, on August 6, 2025. — Bernama pic A search of the suspect's vehicle uncovered a revolver, burglary tools, a police vest, and a fake registration number on the car, believed to have been smuggled from abroad. Lim called on authorities to explain how such a high-risk individual avoided detention and continued operating in the capital despite his known record. He further urged that the police be equipped with body cameras and dashboard cameras to ensure transparency and safety during future operations. 'The people have a right to know what is dysfunctional in this system,' he said. Lim also warned that unless immediate reforms are made, others like the suspect may continue slipping through the cracks, putting more lives at risk.
