CM Murad directs to open M9-M5 Link Road next week
CM Murad said this during the meeting held at the CM House in Karachi. The meeting was attended by provincial ministers Sharjeel Memon, Nasir Shah, Saeed Ghani, prinicipal secretary to the CM Agha Wasif, Secretary Finance Fayaz Jatoi, Secretary Local Government Waseem Shamshad, Secretary Transport Asad Zamin, Project Director Shahrah-e-Bhutto Niaz Soomro, Project Engineer Khalid Masroor and other relevant officials.
On this occasion, the chief minister conducted a comprehensive review of key ongoing infrastructure projects, including the New Link Road, Shahrah-e-Bhutto Expressway, and the Korangi Causeway Bridge near Qayyumabad.
The New Link Road project, aimed at connecting the National Highway (N-5) with Motorway M-9, is progressing, with a significant portion already completed, said a press release issued by the CM House.
'The project is set to transform connectivity for freight and commuter traffic between Port Qasim, Karachi's industrial zones, and the broader national highway network,' the CM said.
The upgraded Link Road corridor is being developed into a four-lane dual carriageway, replacing the congested and underdeveloped existing routes that have long hampered industrial and commercial traffic in the area, the press release added.
CM Murad said that once completed, the road will provide a direct and efficient link between the M-9 Motorway (Karachi-Hyderabad) and National Highway (N-5), greatly reducing travel time and easing the movement of cargo from Port Qasim to the motorway network and other key destinations across the province.
The 22-kilometre New Link Road project is nearing completion, with significant progress on the new interchange at M9 (kilometre 34+740). This Rs3.53 billion project is being executed in collaboration with the National Highway Authority (NHA) and Frontier Works Organization (FWO).
The chief minister was told that the interchange construction is divided into three segments: Southbound, bridge over M9, and Northbound. Work on the Southbound segment is underway and expected to be completed by next month. At this, the CM directed the PPP unit to complete the work so that he could open it for traffic on July 25. He also said that once the new link road is opened the old link road would be closed.
Construction on the bridge and Northbound sections began on April 24, and is progressing steadily. The chief minister directed the PPP Unit to complete the entire interchange by the end of October 2025 to improve connectivity and traffic flow on the M9 motorway. Upon the opening of the New Link Road, the old Link Road will be closed to traffic.
Meanwhile, the 39-kilometre, state-of-the-art, 3x3 lane high-speed access-controlled Shahrah-e-Bhutto Expressway is 82% complete. This expressway connects DHA to the Hyderabad Motorway (M9) near Kathore and includes six interchanges, multiple toll plazas, and modern facilities designed to enhance traffic flow and industrial connectivity in Karachi.
The first segment from Qayyumabad to Quaidabad is 99% complete, while the second segment from Quaidabad to Kathore has reached 65% progress. Key interchanges such as EBM, Shah-Faisal, and Quaidabad are complete, with Jam Sadiq and Memon Goth interchanges making significant progress despite some delays caused by utility relocations and concurrent Yellow Line corridor works.
The Samo Goth elevated structure, a 4-kilometre stretch over the Malir River Bed aimed at preserving local villages, has achieved 48% physical progress since its start in August 2024. Preparations for the Kathore Interchange at M9 are underway, with the Finance Department approving a competitive bidding process to ensure timely execution.
Korangi Causeway Bridge: The Korangi Causeway Bridge project is progressing rapidly, with 80% of the work completed. This Rs6.1 billion project, featuring a 26-meter wide bridge, is scheduled for completion by November 2025. The junction at Shahrah-e-Bhutto and Korangi Causeway has received administrative approval, with tendering underway and construction expected to commence by mid-August 2025. Once the Korangi Causeway Bridge is operational, the existing causeway road will be closed.
CM Murad underscored the critical role these projects play in enhancing Karachi's infrastructure, alleviating traffic congestion, and promoting economic growth through improved connectivity. The Sindh government remains committed to delivering these landmark projects on schedule, fostering sustainable urban development, and strengthening public-private partnerships.

Listen to article Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah criticised the federal government on Friday for releasing only Rs3 billion this year out of the Rs78 billion it had committed for the K-IV water project for Karachi. He said the Sindh government had funded all associated components of the project itself. Speaking at the inauguration of the 20th 'My Karachi – Oasis of Harmony' Exhibition at Expo Center, on Friday Shah said four major K-IV sub-projects were ongoing. A Rs50 billion expansion of water feeders would be completed this year. A separate Rs170 billion project is bringing water from Keenjhar Lake to Karachi, with a power plant being installed by STDC to support two pumping stations. The chief minister announced that a new 100 MGD Hub Canal had been completed and would be inaugurated on August 14, while the old canal would be restored to the same capacity. By year-end, Karachi is expected to receive 200 MGD water from Hub Dam. He also highlighted the Dumlottee project for South Karachi and said 150 MGD additional water would be supplied to the city this year. Shah urged the federal government to increase Karachi's water allocation from Hub Dam, especially as availability had improved due to better climatic conditions. Referring to the 2015–16 World Bank gap analysis, he said Karachi needed Rs3 trillion to meet modern urban standards. Large-scale infrastructure, he stressed, could not be handled by the provincial government alone and required federal support. He criticised the Centre for not convening the Council of Common Interests (CCI) for 18 months. He pointed out that although Sindh produces 70% of Pakistan's gas, it is denied its constitutional share. He vowed to raise the issue in the next CCI meeting and reminded that the constitution requires CCI to meet every three months. Shah called on citizens to fulfil legal duties, such as paying taxes and registering vehicles, and not blame law enforcement for governance issues. He reassured the business community of the Sindh government's full support. Chairman BMG Zubair Motiwala thanked the provincial government for supporting KCCI and urged the CM to expedite K-IV to resolve water shortages in Karachi's industrial areas. He highlighted the exhibition's global recognition and urged foreign diplomats to promote Karachi's positive image abroad. KCCI President Jawed Bilwani appreciated the 'Marka-e-Haq' theme for Independence Day and recalled the 2004 origins of the exhibition. He urged the Sindh government to establish a world-class Expo Center and upgrade Karachi's only existing one. Bilwani criticised high water tariffs and the incomplete K-IV project. He expressed concern over persistent gas shortages and deteriorating infrastructure. SU launches Independence Day celebrations under ‘Marka-e-Haq' theme
HYDERABAD: The University of Sindh, Jamshoro, launched its two weeks Independence Day celebrations under the 'Marka-e-Haq' theme with a vibrant walk and a symbolic tree plantation drive on Friday, in line with the schedule announced recently at a high-level meeting chaired by the Chief Minister of Sindh at the CM House. Waving national flags and raising slogans in favour of the Pakistan Army and Pakistan, a large number of faculty members, officers and staff participated in a spirited march led by SU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Khalil-ur-Rehman Khoumbati. The rally began at the back gate of the administrative building and concluded at the main entrance of AC-II circling around the premises. Participants enthusiastically expressed gratitude for the country's triumphs in past conflicts, particularly hailing the Pakistan Air Force for its decisive actions, including the downing of six Indian fighter jets, including three Rafales. Addressing the rally, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Khoumbati reflected on the sacrifices that led to the creation of Pakistan and warned against the challenges the nation faces today from terrorism and extremism. 'Pakistan was born out of a long and difficult struggle. Today, we are again called upon to stand united and resolute,' he said. Pinning his hopes on the younger generation, the Vice-Chancellor said that university students had the potential to become architects of national revival. 'Our youth can be the force that repels negativity. They possess the vision to chart a new course for the country. We must equip them with education, our most powerful weapon to face the complex challenges of the modern world,' he noted. Accompanying the Vice-Chancellor were Registrar Professor Dr. Mushtaque Ali Jariko, Pro-Vice Chancellor of SU Thatta Campus Professor Dr. Misbah Bibi Qureshi, deans, academic and administrative heads, faculty members, and university employees. Speaking at the plantation ceremony, he said that extreme weather patterns had wreaked havoc in Pakistan in recent years. One of the most impactful ways to counter it was through large-scale tree plantation. 'Everyone from students to staff can take part in this collective mission,' he said. He said that enhancing tree cover would not only combat climate change but also improve air quality and public health, adding that environmental action was a civic responsibility. CM opens ‘My Karachi' exhibition: ‘Nation celebrates Independence Day with focus on Battle of Rights'
KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah stated that this year, the nation celebrates Independence Day with a focus on the 'Marqa-e-Haq' (Battle of Rights), recalling the significant events of May when India attempted a conspiracy, to which Pakistan responded strongly. Shah highlighted the unity shown by the people when the country is under threat, saying, 'We stood united for the protection of Pakistan and achieved success.' He made this statement while addressing the 'My Karachi – Oasis of Harmony Exhibition 2025,' organised by the KCCI at the Expo Centre. The programme was attended by Minister of Local Government Saeed Ghani, Minister of Industries Jam Ikramullah Dharejo, KCCI President Javed Balwani, members of KCCI, and leading industrialists and members of civil society in large numbers. The chief minister said, 'The celebrations for Independence Day' in the province commenced on August 01. Murad Ali Shah reflected on Pakistan's journey since its establishment through the peaceful efforts of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah in 1947 and the subsequent division of the country in 1971. The CM praised the leadership of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto during difficult times, who endowed Pakistan with nuclear capabilities, followed by Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, who advanced missile technology for the empowerment of the armed forces. In a celebratory gesture, the chief minister cut a cake symbolising victory against India, marking the theme of this year's Independence Day celebrations. The 'My Karachi' event has become a signature celebration for the city, with participation from various countries, showcasing Karachi's potential. Shah congratulated the Karachi Chamber for successfully organising the event, highlighting its initiation in 2004 when the city faced significant challenges. The Chief Minister noted improvements in Karachi's security situation, stating that while some street crimes still occur, the overall conditions have improved compared to previous years. He mentioned the World Bank's gap analysis conducted in 2015, which highlighted the need for Rs3 trillion for a better standard of living in Karachi. Shah discussed various projects, including the Karachi Neighbourhood Improvement Project and the Competitive and Liveable City of Karachi (CLICK) project, aimed at enhancing the city's infrastructure. He highlighted the establishment of the Waste Management Authority to improve cleanliness and the introduction of electric buses by the Sindh government. Murad Shah also addressed ongoing water issues, emphasising the need for the swift completion of the K-IV water supply project, which is critical for Karachi's water supply. The chief minister assured that efforts are being made to bring additional water resources to the city and expressed gratitude for the support from the federal government. In a strong statement of unity, the chief minister reiterated that all parties will celebrate Independence Day together, transcending political differences.
