Ringgit rises vs greenback on stronger odds of US rate cut
At 8 am, the local note rose to 4.2205/2405 against the greenback from Thursday's close of 4.2340/2385.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said US initial jobless claims increased more than expected to 226,000 last week, above market forecasts of 221,000.
He said the increase marked a second consecutive weekly rise, supporting views that signs of labour market weakness are emerging, even though Federal Open Market Committee members believe more data is needed before their September meeting.
"Notwithstanding that, the US Dollar Index fell 0.09 per cent to 98,084 points as the odds of a September rate cut are rising,' he told Bernama.
On the domestic front, Mohd Afzanizam said the ringgit could remain supported after coming under selling pressure in yesterday's afternoon session.
"Expect the ringgit against the US dollar to hover around RM4.22 to RM4.23 today,' he added.
The ringgit was mostly lower against a basket of major and regional currencies in early trade.
It eased against the Japanese yen to 2.8750/8888 from 2.8732/8765 on Thursday and weakened against the British pound to 5.6770/7039 from 5.6596/6656. It, however, strengthened against the euro to 4.9283/9516 from 4.9411/9463.
Against regional peers, the local unit was firmer.
It edged up against the Singapore dollar to 3.2906/3064 from 3.2973/3013 and appreciated vis-à-vis the Thai baht to 13.0653/1346 from 13.0954/1146.
The ringgit also gained against the Philippine peso to 7.39/7.44 from 7.42/7.44 and firmed versus the Indonesian rupiah to 259.1/260.4 from 259.9/260.3. - Bernama

JAKARTA (Xinhua): Indonesian Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Yuliot Tanjung has announced that the country is building its first bioethanol factory in Merauke, South Papua province, as part of its efforts to develop alternative energy and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. He said this was conveyed by Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong during separate meetings with both leaders on Saturday. "This highlights Malaysia's active role in ensuring regional peace and stability,' he said in a statement on Saturday. Ahmad Zahid is in Singapore for a two-day working visit beginning Saturday and is scheduled to attend the Singapore National Day Parade this evening at the invitation of the Singapore Government. In the separate meetings, he conveyed his warmest congratulations to the Government and people of Singapore on the occasion of their 60th National Day celebrations. Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid said his meeting with Wong, who is also Finance Minister, focused on strengthening long-standing bilateral relations, including strategic projects that have the potential to boost foreign direct investment (FDI) and create more job opportunities in Malaysia. "We also discussed new areas of cooperation in tourism, TVET, and strengthening people-to-people ties as the foundation for long-term understanding,' he said. Both leaders also examined ways to share best practices in enhancing laws related to the gig economy, which has become one of the key sectors in both countries. Ahmad Zahid said Malaysia and Singapore are studying the matter from legal and policy perspectives to ensure industry players, especially gig workers, receive appropriate protection and have their welfare safeguarded. New e-commerce law proposed by KPDN to regulate digital trade
KOTA KINABALU: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has proposed drafting a new law specifically to regulate e-commerce. The aim is to ensure a more organised and effective digital trade ecosystem at the national level. Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh stated that the proposal is built on three key pillars. These include clearer industry responsibility, stronger enforcement, and comprehensive protection for consumers and small businesses. 'KPDN will ensure that the e-commerce ecosystem is not only innovative but also safe, transparent, and ethical,' she said. She emphasised the importance of cooperation from all stakeholders to achieve these goals. The ministry hopes constructive feedback from engagement sessions will refine the draft legislation before submission. Fuziah spoke to reporters after the second E-Commerce Legislative Review Engagement Session. The session involved industry representatives, digital platforms, merchant associations, and consumer protection groups. Legal experts, academics, and government agency officials also participated in the discussions. KPDN organised the session to address the need for updated e-commerce laws. Existing regulations must remain relevant in governing the fast-changing digital marketplace. 'These improvements are crucial to adapt to dynamic shifts in online business,' Fuziah added. She highlighted the growing role of e-commerce in Malaysia's digital economy. However, rapid growth has also led to risks like fraud and unsafe products. Cross-border enforcement challenges further complicate digital trade regulation. Fuziah noted findings from the E-Commerce Legal Review Study.
