A police officer and a suspect were killed during a shootout in Barangay Commonwealth, Quezon City on early Monday morning.
According to Nico Waje's 'State of the Nation' report, Patrolman Harwin Curtney Bagga and his partner were responding to a robbery incident along Katipunan Street when the suspect managed to surprise and shot at them.
Despite being mortally wounded, Bagga and his partner returned fire, fatally hitting the suspect.
Bagga was brought to the hospital but later passed away. The bullet in his arm went through his chest.
Authorities have yet to identify the suspect.
The robbery victim, a food cart owner and a bystander were also shot.
The National Capital Region Police Office said the responding police officers actually encountered the suspect who told them the direction of the supposed robber.
When the cops turned away, the suspect pulled out his gun and fired at them.
The Philippine National Police is preparing a recognition to be awarded to the slain cop. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA Integrated News

1 Tondo blast victim set for surgery; 3 others in ICU — DOH

The six victims of an explosion in Tondo, Manila are currently undergoing medical treatment due to the severity of their injuries. According to a statement Tuesday, the six victims are recuperating at the Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center (JRRMMC) following the explosion. Three of the victims had undergone surgery and are now recovering at the surgical intensive care unit, while another victim is set for surgery due to facial injuries. DOH also shared that the youngest victim was a 14-year-old, who received traumatic brain injury with multiple fractures on the legs, arms, and gashes on the head and torso. Meanwhile, two other victims have been discharged after being treated for minor injuries. The six victims are recipients of the zero-balance billing in DOH hospitals recently enacted by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. following his fourth State of the Nation Address. According to an earlier report from Unang Balita, the explosion occurred on Sunday afternoon at Tayuman and Dagupan Streets in Barangay 234. The blast left the victims bloody and injured on the sidewalk, including the 14-year-old victim who was declared in critical condition. Barangay authorities reported that the victims were scavengers working on the sidewalk when the explosion occurred. Police said the explosion was caused by a compressor the victims were attempting to salvage for parts. — Jiselle Anne Casucian/RF, GMA Integrated News

Catherine Camilon friend backs out as witness over security concerns —PNP

Catherine Camilon, who represented Tuy, Batangas in the Miss Grand Philippines 2023 pageant, was reported missing by her family in October 2023. File photo A friend of missing beauty queen Catherine Camilon has withdrawn as witness due to security concerns, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday. 'We received information na medyo apprehensive na yung kaibigan ng nawawala na si Ms. Camilon because natakot siya para sa security and safety niya,' PNP spokesperson Police Brigadier General Jean Fajardo said in an ambush interview. (We received information that the friend of the missing Ms. Camilon is a bit apprehensive and are afraid for their security and safety.) Fajardo said the PNP vows protection for Camilon's friend. 'Huwag siya magdalawang-isip dahil ang intensyon naman natin ay bigyan ng hustisya itong pagkawala ng kanyang kaibigan kasi critical yung kanyang magiging participation sa kaso na ito,' Fajardo said. (We hope the friend will now change their mind because our intention is to bring justice to Camilon, and their participation in this case is critical.) 'Unang-una siya yung last person na nakausap ni Camilon at siya rin diumano ang nakakaalam sa diumano na special na relasyon ni Camilon dito sa na-dismiss na pulis na si (Police Major Allan de Castro),' she added. (First of all, Camilon's friend was the last person she spoke to and allegedly knew about Camilon's alleged special relationship with the dismissed Police Major Allan de Castro.) De Castro and his driver Jeffrey Magpantay are facing kidnapping and serious illegal detention charges for their alleged involvement in Camilon's disappearance in 2023. Charges against both suspects were initially dropped in May 2024 due to a lack of evidence, however both suspects now face the same charges with no recommended bail, filed by the Batangas Regional Trial Court. De Castro was alleged to be in a relationship with the former beauty queen before her reported disappearance, while Magpantay served as his driver-bodyguard. The ex-cop was reportedly supposed to meet Camilon on the day of her disappearance, which he denied. Camilon's car was last seen going through some towns in Batangas via CCTV footage on October 12, 2023. Witnesses later claimed that they saw a bloodied Camilon being transferred to a different vehicle on the same day, while Magpantay was in the area. Testing of an abandoned vehicle located in the area by the police later revealed hair and blood that matched the DNA profile of Camilon's parents. — BM, GMA Integrated News

Torre: Proceeds from charity boxing match donated to Red Cross, DSWD

A referee raises the hand of Philippine National Police chief Police General Nicolas Torre III after declaring him the winner in the 'Boxing for a Cause: Laban Para sa Nasalanta' charity boxing event at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum on Sunday, July 27, 2025. His opponent, acting Davao City Mayor Sebastian 'Baste' Duterte was a no-show. JUSTIN KENNETH CARANDANG/GMA Integrated News A portion of the proceeds of the July 28 charity boxing match in Manila's Rizal Memorial Coliseum were donated to the Philippine Red Cross and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Philippine National Police chief Police General Nicolas Torre III said Monday. 'Nakapag-bigay na po tayo ng P5 million sa Philippine Red Cross,' Torre said. 'Ang natitira pang mga pera, ang DSWD ay iko-convert na lang sa bigas. So bibili kami ng limang tonelada, that would be I think 1,000 sacks ng bigas dahil para mas mabilis daw ang accounting process,' he added. (We were able to give P5 million to the Philippine Red to the remaining money, the DSWD will convert this to rice. So we will buy give tons, that would be I think is equivalent to 1,000 sacks so the accounting procss could be faster.) Torre said that right after the boxing event, donations were also distributed to 1,000 people in Tondo, Manila. The remaining proceeds will be provided to relief operations in other areas, he added. According to Torre, more than P16 million were raised during the charity boxing event, which was organized to provide aid to the victims of recent tropical cyclones Crising, Dante, Emong, and the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat. Torre was declared as the winner of the match against acting Davao City mayor Sebastian "Baste" Duterte with the latter not showing up in the event. Torre declared winner as Baste Duterte a no-show in charity event | GMA News Online The match was planned after Duterte in a vlog posted July 20 mentioned Torre and said: 'Kasi matapang ka lang naman you have the position. Pero kung suntukan tayo, alam kong makaya kita. But then you're a coward.' (You're brave because you have the position but if we fight, I know I can handle you. But then you're a coward.) Torre responded to this by saying it could be in the form of a charity boxing match and the proceeds would be for those affected by the recent storms. The top cop scheduled the match on July 27. Duterte said he was not available on the said date as it was a 'family day,' but said he would be available on another day. To recall, Torre led the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte — the acting mayor's father — in March, as Philippine authorities assisted Interpol in serving a warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity in connection with his drug war.
