Calcutta HC directs Centre to start 100-day job scheme in Bengal from August 1
However, while giving the direction to the Union government, the division bench of Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam and Justice Chaitali Chattopadhyay also gave a free hand to impose any condition on the West Bengal government on the proper implementation of the 100-day job scheme to ensure the prevention of corruption in the implementation process.
While giving the direction, it also authorised the Centre to pay the amount directly to the bank accounts of the beneficiaries, if required.
The court also authorised the Union government to monitor the implementation process to prevent future corruption and also to carry out ongoing investigations on past instances of corruption.
The direction to the Union government came on a petition filed by the organisation, Paschim Banga Khet Mazdoor Samiti (West Bengal Agricultural Workers' Forum), accusing the Centre of not releasing funds under the 100-day job scheme. Senior advocate and the CPI-M Rajya Sabha member Bikas Ranjan Bhattacharya appeared on behalf of the forum.
On the same issue, the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, also filed a case at the Calcutta High Court. However, his contention was that there had been massive irregularities in the implementation of the 100-day job scheme in West Bengal.
The state's ruling Trinamool Congress had been quite vocal against the Union government over the non-release of central funds under the MGNREGA scheme for the last three years. On the other hand, the Union government and the BJP argued that the funds have been stopped for the state under this scheme due to rampant corruption in the implementation of the scheme in the past.
Field inspection teams from the Union government during the last couple of years toured several districts in West Bengal, probing the complaints on corruption in the implementation of the scheme.

If we do such work continuously, then the growth rate of our country's economy will increase up to three times." Gadkari's remarks come after US President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed an Executive Order imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on imports from India. Trump cited matters of national security and foreign policy concerns, as well as other relevant trade laws, for the increase, claiming that India's imports of Russian oil, directly or indirectly, pose an "unusual and extraordinary threat" to the United States. Terming the United States' move to impose additional tariffs on India over its oil imports from Russia as "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable," the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) declared that New Delhi will take "all actions necessary to protect its national interests.

"Hope PM Modi Restores J&K Statehood On August 15": J&K Deputy Chief Minister
Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Sunday expressed hope that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would announce restoration of full statehood to the Union Territory from the ramparts of Red Fort in his address to the nation on Independence Day. Addressing a public meeting organised by the National Conference at Tali Morh Bari near here, Mr Choudhary recalled the events of August 5, 2019 and alleged the downgrading of a full-fledged state into two Union territories — J&K and Ladakh — was done arbitrarily. 'The people of Jammu and Kashmir have never accepted the 2019 decision. The promise made by the prime minister and home minister (Amit Shah) that statehood will be restored at an appropriate time must now be fulfilled.' "It is the most appropriate time to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir by pushing a bill regarding the same in current (Monsoon) session of parliament," the deputy chief minister said. "Hopefully, the PM shall announce restoration of statehood to J&K on August 15 during his speech to the nation from the ramparts of Red Fort," he said. Mr Choudhary also highlighted the achievements of the Omar Abdullah-led government like free travel for women in government-run buses, enhancement of marriage assistance from Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000 for Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) families, 200 units of free electricity for AAY households, and increase in pension for senior citizens, widows and physically challenged. National Conference provincial president Rattan Lal Gupta emphasized that the 2024 assembly elections have sent a clear message that the massive mandate given by the people in favour of the party is a rejection of the 2019 move to downgrade the erstwhile state into UT. He said the democratic mandate must be respected. Reaffirming the ruling party's commitment to equitable development, he said the National Conference has intensified its mass contact programme across Jammu region. 'We are reaching out to the people to listen to their grievances, ensure timely redressal, and make them aware of the achievements of the Omar Abdullah-led government over the past 10 months,' Mr Gupta said. He said the party firmly stands with the aspirations of people and will continue to advocate restoration of full statehood and the rights of the citizens of J&K.

HYDERABAD: Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka said neither poverty nor backwardness can stop anyone who sets a goal and works sincerely to achieve it, citing former Union minister P Shiv Shankar as the best example. He noted that Shiv Shankar rose to become the No. 2 in the country under former prime minister Indira Gandhi. He was speaking at Ravindra Bharathi on Sunday at a meeting to mark Shiv Shankar's 96th birth anniversary. The event, organised by his son Dr Punjala Vinay Kumar, chairman of the TPCC Samvidhan Bachao Programme Committee, drew ministers, legislators, bureaucrats, activists and admirers. The Congress leadership resolved to install a statue of the former Union minister, who held key portfolios including Law, Petroleum and External Affairs, at a prominent location. Bhatti recalled how Shiv Shankar, engaged in small jobs to support his family, went to Amritsar to pursue a law degree and overcame hardships through education. 'Nothing is impossible,' he said, staying late into the night to deliver his tribute.
