Andhra Pradesh drive: Govt schemes for tribals; health, housing, pensions explained
NUZVID: Mandal Parishad Development Officer (MPDO) Chenna Raghavendranath said that people should avail themselves of all the govt schemes and programmes.
He mentioned that state and central govts were implementing several welfare programmes, particularly for the upliftment of the tribals and socially backward classes.
A village-level awareness programme was held as part of the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN) at Ongili Thanda on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, Raghavendranath stated that the objective of this programme was to raise awareness about govt welfare schemes in tribal areas and deliver necessary services directly to the people.
'Services such as health checkups, education opportunities, healthcare, nutrition support, pension eligibility verifications, and information on newly introduced govt schemes will be provided by the govt.
This programme is especially focused on the welfare of Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) through the involvement of various departments,' said Raghavendranath.
He mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, chief minister Chandrababu Naidu, deputy chief minister Pawan Kalyan, and housing minister Parthasaradhi were very keen on ensuring that the administration reached out to the PVTGs to extend the benefits of the govt schemes.

He explained that Dharti Aaba Abhiyan is a special national campaign launched by the Centre for the holistic development of tribal villages. It is named in honour of Birsa Munda, a revered tribal freedom fighter and reformer. 'The scheme ensures saturation of govt schemes in tribal villages.
It will improve access to healthcare, education, employment, pensions, housing, and other essential services. It will also bring remote and backward tribal areas into the path of sustainable development,' said Raghavendranath.
He stated that they would verify whether the schemes, including PM Awas Yojana for housing, Ayushman Bharat, PM Kisan, Ujjwala Yojana, and MGNREGA, were extended to all the eligible people. A large number of villagers actively participated and availed themselves of services and guidance.
Local public representatives, teachers, ASHA workers, anganwadi workers, village elders, women's group members, students, and youth took part enthusiastically in the event. Officials from health, panchayat raj, education, agriculture, irrigation, and other departments delivered services and interacted with the public.
Field-level reviews were also conducted to assess the implementation of welfare programmes in the tribal village, and suitable suggestions were offered.

Kenyan police officers arraigned over shooting a civilian during protests
AP image NAIROBI: A court in Kenya on Thursday gave detectives 15 days to complete investigations of two police officers suspected of shooting and wounding a hawker during the latest street protests over the death of a blogger in custody. The officers were arraigned in court two days after the Tuesday shooting on a busy street and under the full glare of cameras. It triggered anger and fury over persistent complaints against police brutality. Tuesday's protests in the capital followed tensions over the death of the blogger, Albert Ojwang, who was found dead while in custody at the central police station. Ojwang was arrested on June 6 in western Kenya for what police called publishing "false information" about a top police official on social media. Police attributed his death to him "hitting his head against the cell wall," but activists have questioned the cause of death. Protesters on Tuesday demanded the arrest of the police deputy inspector general, Eliud Langat, who had filed a defamation complaint against Ojwang. Langat said Monday he had stepped aside and would cooperate with investigators. The two officers at the central police station were arrested last week. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The officers will remain in custody until July 3. During their court appearance, they concealed their faces with masks, sparking complaints from activists. Kenya has a history of police brutality, and President William Ruto previously vowed to end it, along with extrajudicial killings. Last year, several activists and protesters were abducted and killed by Kenyan police during protests against tax hikes. The demonstrations led to calls for Ruto's removal.

Indian rapeseed meal exports soar as China replaces Canadian supply
China is set to make record purchases of rapeseed meal from India following Beijing's move to impose a 100% retaliatory tariff on Canadian imports, senior industry officials said. India's rapeseed meal exports will help China, the world's top consumer, replace imports from Canada while easing pressure on local rapeseed prices in India where there are large stockpiles of the widely used animal feed. "Indian rapeseed meal is very competitive compared to other origins. That's why China has been increasing purchases since March," B.V. Mehta , executive director of the Solvent Extractors' Association of India , told Reuters. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo India's rapeseed meal exports to China are likely to jump to a record 500,000 metric tons in the 2025/26 marketing year which started in April, up from the last year's 60,759 tons, Mehta said. In the first two months of 2025/26, India exported 113,836 tons of rapeseed meal to China, which imposed a 100% retaliatory tariff on rapeseed meal and oil imports from Canada starting on March 20. Live Events In 2024, China imported 2.02 million metric tons of rapeseed meal from Canada, 504,000 tons from the United Arab Emirates, and 135,000 tons from Russia, according to customs data. It bought 13,100 tons from India. India, the world's third-largest rapeseed producer, had struggled to export significant amounts of rapeseed meal to China because of higher prices in the past. But now India is offering rapeseed meal at around $202 per ton on a free-on-board (FOB) basis compared to around $300 for supplies from the European Union, traders said. "China has emerged as the biggest buyer of Indian rapeseed meal from nowhere. It is buying more than 50,000 tons every month," said one of the leading exporters. South Korea, Bangladesh, Thailand, and Vietnam traditionally account for the bulk of India's rapeseed meal exports. India badly needs edible oils to fulfill local demand amid lower imports in the past few months, said the exporter. "Higher rapeseed crushing because of Chinese demand for meal is improving rapeseed oil supplies," he said. India, the world's biggest importer of vegetable oils, buys palm oil mainly from Indonesia and Malaysia, while it imports soyoil and sunflower oil from Argentina, Brazil, Russia and Ukraine.

University of Minnesota approves largest tuition hike in a decade amid US education funding crisis
University of Minnesota approves steep tuition hike amid US funding crisis. (AI Image) The University of Minnesota (U of M) Board of Regents has approved the largest tuition increase in more than ten years, marking a significant development in the landscape of US higher education. In a 9-3 vote held on June 18, 2025, the board adopted a budget for fiscal year 2026 that includes tuition increases across all campuses and cuts to academic spending. The decision comes as the university faces a steep reduction in federal and state support, with leaders citing an 'uncertain financial landscape' and warning of tough decisions ahead. As reported by KSTP, University President Rebecca Cunningham told the board that 'higher education is facing unprecedented challenges' and emphasized the need to ensure financial stability despite the difficult choices involved. Tuition hike affects students across all campuses Under the new budget, undergraduate tuition will increase by 4% to 7.5% depending on the campus. Graduate students will see tuition rise by 6.5% for residents and 7.5% for out-of-state students. According to KSTP, officials said this marks the steepest tuition hike in over a decade and is part of a broader effort to stabilize finances. The board also approved a 7% cut in academic spending, a move that has drawn concern from students and faculty. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Here's A List Of Cheapest Steel Suppliers (See List) Steel Suppliers | search ads Search Now Undo During a public hearing the week prior to the vote, members of the university community expressed fears about the impact these changes could have on education quality and employee well-being. Federal and state funding cuts deepen financial strain University officials warned that a potential 30% reduction in federal funding and a 3.5% decline in state funding (adjusted for inflation) are exacerbating budget pressures. Cunningham noted during the meeting, as quoted by KSTP, that 'we can all agree there are no easy choices this year.' Board member Doug Huebsch defended the vote, saying, 'Not everyone is going to be happy with this budget… but it is our job and obligation to deliver a budget that's balanced and as fair as possible,' as reported by KSTP. Low-income students promised protection Despite the hikes, university leaders stressed that low-income students will not be adversely affected. Thanks to programs like the North Star Promise and sustained scholarship and aid efforts, tuition increases will be offset for qualifying students. As per KSTP, the administration reassured the public that affordability remains a priority. The budget will take effect starting fiscal year 2026, as the University of Minnesota moves to navigate what leaders described as one of the most challenging periods for higher education in recent memory.
