Thousands raised in Poppy Atkinson appeal
More than £22,000 has been raised in memory of a 10-year-old girl killed when a car crashed on to a pitch where she was playing football.
Poppy Atkinson was attending a training session at Kendal Rugby Club, in Cumbria, on Wednesday evening.
A 40-year-old man from Lancaster, who was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, has been released while Cumbria Police continues its investigation.
Football clubs of all levels paid tribute to the youngster over the weekend with a minute's silence, while Manchester United Women's captain Maya Le Tissier held up a shirt with Poppy's name on it after her side's first goal in their FA Cup victory over Sunderland.
An online fundraiser was set up by her uncles Gary Gregory and Thomas Atkinson, with the donated money to be used to cover the costs of a memorial, as well as supporting grassroots football teams across the UK.
Poppy's family have described her as "force of nature" who wanted to grow up to be a professional footballer.
In a statement released last week, they said: "Many who know her, and who know her determination to improve and win, had no doubt she would achieve her goal to one day to play for Manchester United.
"She was so special, she was too good for this world.
"Poppy touched so many lives, it was easy to see why, her energy, character, spirit and passion for football was infectious and touched huge numbers of people.
"The hole in our lives and so many around us that Poppy leaves is enormous, we will never be whole again."
Poppy played for Kendal United's U12 girls team and Morecambe Girls.
Kendal United described her as "our much loved player", saying her "love for football shone through to all who met her and she was an inspiration to her teammates".
Morecambe FC said she would "always remain part of the Shrimps family".
Messages of condolence have also been sent from some of the England Women's team, including Georgia Stanway who is from Barrow.
On social media, her fellow Lioness Ella Toone described Poppy's death as "heartbreaking".
At the time of the incident, police said there was "no indication" to suggest it had been a deliberate act.
An eight-year-old girl, also from Kendal, was taken to hospital for treatment, but her injuries were not life-threatening.

Trent Alexander-Arnold gives speech in Spanish during Real Madrid unveiling
Trent Alexander-Arnold spoke in speech in Spanish during his unveiling as a Real Madrid player on Thursday. The 26-year-old went through the formalities of signing his new six-year contract alongside Madrid club president Florentino Perez at the club's Valdebebas training gronud before the unveiling ceremony to media and his family. Advertisement The full-back will wear No.12 and 'Trent' on the back of his shirt as a Madrid player, leaving behind the No. 66 and surname he had at former club Liverpool. Speaking in Spanish, Alexander-Arnold said: 'Thanks to president Florentino Perez and this club for this opportunity. To sign for a club like Real Madrid does not happen every day, it is a dream come true, I am happy and proud to be here and I am really looking forward to showing madridistas my play. 'I know it is a big responsibility to play for this club but I am ready to give everything for this club and these fans. I really want to show them how I play, and to win many trophies, and improve among the best players in the world.' Alexander-Arnold is the second new signing from the Premier League to be unveiled by the Spanish side this week following Dean Huijsen's unveiling at the training complex on Tuesday. The 20-year-old Spain international joined Madrid from Bournemouth in a £50million ($64.8m) deal on a contract through to 2030, making him the Spanish club's most expensive defender. England international Alexander-Arnold agreed to join Madrid as a free agent after his contract at Liverpool expired, although the Spanish giants paid €10million (£8.4m; $11.4m) to sign him ahead of his Anfield contract expiring on June 30, ensuring the full-back would be available for the entirely of their Club World Cup campaign. He was booed by Liverpool fans in his first appearance after announcing his departure in May — a 2-2 draw against Arsenal at Anfield — as many reacted strongly to the decision of the homegrown talent to leave his boyhood club. Alexander-Arnold spent 20 years at Liverpool, first joining the academy at the age of six. He made his debut as an 18-year-old in 2016 and registered over 350 appearances, winning the Champions League, two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup. Madrid are set to play their first Club World Cup fixture against Al Hilal at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium on June 18.

Former Gunner scores free-kick with ‘weak foot'
Santi Cazorla scored a vital free-kick with his supposed 'weak' foot on Wednesday night, sending boyhood club Real Oviedo through to the La Liga promotion play-off final. Photo via Cazorla on Instagram Seven years after leaving Arsenal and at the age of 40, Santi Cazorla continues to play a regular role for Real Oviedo in the Spanish second tier. Advertisement The former Gunner has made 34 appearances for Oviedo this season, including 25 starts. But it was in a substitute appearance in midweek that he scored his most important goal since signing for the club. Photo via Cazorla on Instagram Having finished third in La Liga 2, Oviedo are currently playing in the promotion play-offs for the chance to rejoin the top tier of Spanish football. Taking on UD Almeria in the semi-final, Cazorla played 82 minutes of a 2-1 win in the first leg, but he came on at half-time of Wednesday's second leg with his team 1-0 down – level at 2-2 on aggregate. Just a few minutes into his substitute showing, the Spanish international won a free-kick, and he stepped up to score it with his 'weaker' left foot. View Tweet Photo via Cazorla on Instagram Arsenal fans will be well aware that Cazorla doesn't really have a weak foot, but he does generally have a preference for using his right. Gunners supporters will recall his iconic right-footed free-kick to get their team back in the mix in the 2014 FA Cup final. Advertisement So to take on an important free-kick with his left just shows the confidence the player has on both sides. Oviedo ended up drawing the match 1-1, sending them through to the play-off final 3-2 on aggregate. The team will face either Mirandes or Racing de Santander in the play-off final, depending on the winner of their semi.

Chelsea release 2025-26 away kit
Chelsea have unveiled their away kit for the 2025-26 season. "In the early 1970s and fresh from securing our first FA Cup and European trophy, Blues manager Dave Sexton, himself an artist when it came to the tactical game, introduced a Chelsea away strip coloured as a tribute to Hungary's famous 'Magnificent Magyars' side from two decades earlier, whose extravagant patterns on the pitch had so influenced his own winning football," the club said. Advertisement "Soon, the simple plain red, white and green of that kit evolved into a white shirt with a broad red and green vertical stripe, whose theme is now reimagined in a subtle form 50 years on." The club also confirmed that the shirt will be worn in Club World cup matches against Flamengo and ES Tunis and later this month. Tell us your thoughts on the kit here
