Thousands raised in Poppy Atkinson appeal

Yahoo10-03-2025
More than £22,000 has been raised in memory of a 10-year-old girl killed when a car crashed on to a pitch where she was playing football.
Poppy Atkinson was attending a training session at Kendal Rugby Club, in Cumbria, on Wednesday evening.
A 40-year-old man from Lancaster, who was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, has been released while Cumbria Police continues its investigation.
Football clubs of all levels paid tribute to the youngster over the weekend with a minute's silence, while Manchester United Women's captain Maya Le Tissier held up a shirt with Poppy's name on it after her side's first goal in their FA Cup victory over Sunderland.
An online fundraiser was set up by her uncles Gary Gregory and Thomas Atkinson, with the donated money to be used to cover the costs of a memorial, as well as supporting grassroots football teams across the UK.
Poppy's family have described her as "force of nature" who wanted to grow up to be a professional footballer.
In a statement released last week, they said: "Many who know her, and who know her determination to improve and win, had no doubt she would achieve her goal to one day to play for Manchester United.
"She was so special, she was too good for this world.
"Poppy touched so many lives, it was easy to see why, her energy, character, spirit and passion for football was infectious and touched huge numbers of people.
"The hole in our lives and so many around us that Poppy leaves is enormous, we will never be whole again."
Poppy played for Kendal United's U12 girls team and Morecambe Girls.
Kendal United described her as "our much loved player", saying her "love for football shone through to all who met her and she was an inspiration to her teammates".
Morecambe FC said she would "always remain part of the Shrimps family".
Messages of condolence have also been sent from some of the England Women's team, including Georgia Stanway who is from Barrow.
On social media, her fellow Lioness Ella Toone described Poppy's death as "heartbreaking".
At the time of the incident, police said there was "no indication" to suggest it had been a deliberate act.
An eight-year-old girl, also from Kendal, was taken to hospital for treatment, but her injuries were not life-threatening.

Wolves host Manchester City at Molineux on Saturday as Pep Guardiola's City aim to finish off where they left off last season. WATCH — Wolves v Manchester City After a rollercoaster of a season, City ended up winning seven of their last 10 games to finish third in the Premier League table. After winning four titles in a row before that, last season was obviously a disappointment. But a huge squad overhaul in January and the summer sees the dawn of a new era. Losing the FA Cup final to Crystal Palace and being knocked out of the Club World Cup by Al-Hilal in shock fashion shows there's plenty of work for Guardiola to do with his new squad. But you can never bet against City and they'll likely be title contenders again. Wolves have had a rough summer, as Vitor Pereira's reward for keeping them up last season was losing three of his best players. Matheus Cunha, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Nelson Semedo have all moved on and Wolves fans will have concerns they will be dragged into a relegation scrap this season. They have enough quality to survive and Pereira proved himself a shrewd tactician in setting up a counter-attacking team. But losing Cunha in particular was a big blow. Brighton season preview: Hope for another European adventure… and fewer injuries

Brighton & Hove Albion are about to begin a ninth successive season in the Premier League. Under four managers they have finished as low as 17th, and as high as sixth. They have played in Europe and reached the FA Cup semi-finals twice, sold a player (Moises Caicedo) for a British record transfer fee of £115million, and signed a player (Georginio Rutter) for £40m. What lies in store this time around? The Athletic's Brighton correspondent, Andy Naylor, gazes into his crystal ball… The same as last season: to push for a European place and have a crack at winning a first major trophy in one of the domestic cup competitions. They went close last season, ending up eighth to just miss out on Europe. They want another taste of Europe after finishing sixth in 2022-23 under Roberto De Zerbi and reaching the last 16 of the Europa League the following season. Advertisement Losing at home to Nottingham Forest on penalties in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup in March was painful. Especially as rivals Crystal Palace went on to lift the trophy, although that proved it can be done by a club outside the elite. The League Cup record is poor — not reaching the quarter-finals since 1978-79 — but they have been FA Cup quarter-finalists or semi-finalists four times in the last eight seasons, so they are knocking on the door in the biggest knockout competition. Italian 21-year-old Diego Coppola (£9.4m from Hellas Verona) and 27-year-old Frenchman Olivier Boscagli, on a free transfer from PSV, give the centre of defence an injection of youthful power and pacy nous. Adventurous left-back Maxim De Cuyper, 24 (£17.3m from Club Brugge), replaces Pervis Estupinan following the Ecuadorian's move to Milan. The other two signings in the current window are rich in unproven promise — 18-year-old Greek forward Charalampos Kostoulas from Olympiacos in Greece (over £31m including add-ons) and 19-year-old former Sunderland winger Tommy Watson (£10m). Both teenagers are regarded as long-term investments. Cuiabano from Botafogo in Brazil was a target in the early stages of the summer window. Formal offers were made, reaching nearly £7m with add-ons, for the versatile 22-year-old, who can play anywhere on the left. Dutchman Jelle ten Rouwelaar has joined from Leicester City as goalkeeping coach in a bid to bring the best out of Dutch No 1 Bart Verbruggen. They worked together at NAC Breda in their homeland and at Belgian club Anderlecht. The goalkeeping coach duties last season were shared between Jack Stern and Marco Knoop, who came with head coach Fabian Hurzeler from St Pauli. Defensive set pieces formed part of Knoop's duties, while Hurzeler's assistant Jonas Scheuermann looked after attacking set plays. Advertisement New set-piece coach Yannick Euvrard will be responsible for both defence and attacking plans. The 32-year-old Belgian has been in the same role at Anderlecht for the last two years, having spent four years before that working for the Belgian Football Association on set pieces. Brighton had the fourth-best record defending set pieces and the fifth-best record scoring from them last season, but it is an area which Hurzeler believes is open to marginal gains. Matt O'Riley looked sharp and hungry. The Danish international midfielder has attracted interest from clubs in Italy after a frustrating debut season with Brighton in 2024-25, punctuated by injuries and irregular game time. The £25m signing from Celtic could force his way into the reckoning at No 8 or No 10 — or be on his way. A young and energetic squad, with quality depth in most departments, under the guidance of a young and ambitious head coach. Keeping hold of Japanese winger Kaoru Mitoma, a full season of record buy Rutter (injured from March last season) and other signings from the near £200m spend last summer proving their worth second time around. Replacing the goals (30 in 70 appearances) and penalty-taking expertise of Joao Pedro (15 of those goals), or a repeat of the relentless injury problems they suffered last season. Numerous niggling absences across the pre-season programme, plus the loss of Adam Webster for most of the campaign with knee ligament damage sustained in a non-contact incident in training during the camp in Spain in July, do not bode well on that front. Then there's the distinct possibility that Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are nowhere near as bad as they were last season, which would make it more difficult to improve on last season's finishing position. Quietly optimistic. Although he gets hot under the collar sometimes in the technical area, Hurzeler is level-headed in coping with the fluctuations that are par for the course for Brighton, competing in the toughest league in the world. He does not get carried away by good results and spells, or bogged down in bad times. Ninety-nine per cent. The one per cent is if the worst happened — deep in relegation trouble with a chunk of the season left. Even in those improbable circumstances it is not the style of owner-chairman Tony Bloom to panic. It will not come to that anyway. Brighton have moved on from the club they were when they entered the Premier League in 2017 as bottom six material, intent on staying up. Advertisement There is no complacency internally, but the squad has reached a level of quality now for the parameters of possibilities to be set somewhere between 14th and fourth. Carlos Baleba's improvement continues, leading to a big move next summer. It's not just Manchester United, whose interest has recently be reported by The Athletic's David Ornstein — at least one other Premier League club are keeping tabs on the 21-year-old Cameroonian midfielder. Baleba is an exceptional talent with the potential to be as good, if not better, than Caicedo. He was bought as a raw teenager two years ago for £26 million from French club Lille, a fortnight after Caicedo joined Chelsea for a British record package of £115m. Baleba has all the tools develop into an outstanding box-to-box midfielder. He just needs more consistency. On the basis that is hard to make judgments at this stage on the new signings: Verbruggen; Hinshelwood, Van Hecke, Dunk, Kadioglu; Baleba, Ayari; Minteh, Rutter, Mitoma; Welbeck. Ask me again in January and it might look a lot different! The newcomers could transform that line-up. Spot the pattern.
