Girls killed after being mown down by mom-of-two who plowed into after-school club... as driver remains free
Marianne Akers's black Jeep rammed straight through the YNOT Outdoors Summer And After School Camp in Chatham, exiting the other side of the building about 3.20pm on Monday.
Kathryn Corley and Alma Buhnerkempe, both seven, Ainsley Johnson, eight, and Rylee Britton, 18, died from blunt force trauma injuries, the coroner said. Six other children were injured, one of whom is still in critical condition. Two of them were identified as Mia and Emma.
Three of the victims were hit by the Jeep as they stood outside the building, while the fourth person who died was inside the building, police said.
The six injured children were rushed to hospital, including one with injuries so severe they had to be airlifted for treatment.
'Postmortem procedures done today indicate that they all died from multiple blunt force injuries sustained in the incident,' Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon said.
Akers is understood to have crashed her car into the east side of the school facility with such force that it burst out the other side seconds later.
'The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but this does not appear to be a targeted attack,' Illinois State Police said.
After the shocking incident Akers, 44, was filmed in handcuffs wearing a dark gray T-shirt. She was uninjured despite crashing through walls.
She was taken to a local hospital for evaluation with toxicology results still pending, but was not placed under arrest.
'Akers is not in custody at this time as the cause of the crash remains under investigation,' Illinois State Police said.
Chatham Police Department debunked rampant social media rumors that Akers was drunk and failed a field sobriety test after the crash.
'This is not true. Please stop sharing this,' the department's Facebook page commented on a post claiming Akers was arrested for a suspected DUI.
Akers is a food service worker at Chatham Elementary School and a mother of two children - a teenage boy and girl.
Ainsley's grandfather Galen Johnson mourned her online with a photo of her in an adorable fancy dress outfit.
'Words alone cannot express the pain we in the Johnson family are feeling with the loss of granddaughter Ainsley Grace Johnson. Love you "Squirt!"' he wrote.
Ainsley was a dancer at Studio M Dance Centre, where her teacher Mariah Clark promised to always remember her.
'Ainsley brought so much light and joy into my class, she always gave me a little hip-hop tude and I lived for it,' she said.
'Her smile was so bright, her personality was already so big at such a young age, and she danced like she meant it. I will forever keep Ainsley in my heart.'
Britton was a senior at Glenwood High School and like many of the students who helped run the program, planned to be a teacher.
'One of my favorite things about her was how she was unconditionally nice to everyone,' a classmate said.
'She was super-intelligent and always made people laugh.'
A fundraiser for the victims and their families has already attracted more than $75,000 in donations.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker expressed his horror, writing: 'Parents said goodbye to their kids this morning not knowing it would be the last time.
'Our community lost a group of bright and innocent young people with their whole lives ahead of them.
'Let's wrap our arms around the community tonight as we receive updates on the situation.'
Devastated locals recalled the moment their neighbors, friends, and loved ones learned of the tragedy and rushed to the scene.
'Watching people you know sprint past your house, not knowing if their children are safe, is a gut-wrenching experience. My heart aches for everyone,' one wrote.
Employees and volunteers at the local blood bank, ImpactLife, urged locals to give blood as they drained much of their stockpile helping victims of the crash.
'After the tragic events today the blood bank is running low, please if your able go donate,' one woman wrote.
Another said: 'I work at the blood center, and we had to pack up so much of our supply for this, so please if you can donate blood, platelets, any of it, go do it.'
Shock speed: Akers is understood to have crashed her car into the side of the school facility with such force that it burst out the other side seconds later
Illinois Senator Doris Turner said she was 'heartbroken' by the tragedy.
'When we drop our kids off in the morning, we should always have the utmost belief that they will come home safely at the end of the day,' she wrote.
'For some families, that belief was shaken today following the tragedy at YNOT in Chatham.
'I am heartbroken - there truly are no words to explain what the Chatham community is feeling and will feel for days, weeks and months to come.
'I want to thank the first responders, law enforcement and volunteers.'

Dramatic moment knife-wielding car thief taken down by police is caught on camera
Harrowing footage has captured the moment a car thief slashed a police officer with a box knife before setting his car alight following a high-speed chase. Diesel Jackson, 25, punched two police officers, wielding a box knife, at a home in Frankston, in Melbourne 's south-east, on the evening of March 22, 2024. The officers, a man and woman, were responding to reports of a man at the property with a stolen white Jeep Grand Cherokee. When they arrived, Jackson waved a box knife and slashed one of the officers before fleeing in the stolen vehicle. Bodycam footage released by a judge to Seven News on Friday showed the male officer breaking away from the tussle and pointing a gun at the knife-wielding man. 'Put it down... Put the f***ing knife down!' he said. During the altercation, the female officer pleaded with the male officer to let Jackson go, having found herself 'trapped' alone in the room with the armed man. 'No, no, let him go, let him get out.... I'm trapped!' she said. During the altercation, neither of the officers were equipped with tasers but one of them used capsicum spray against the enraged Jackson, although it had little effect. 'Let him go, not worth it,' the female officer said as her police partner stepped out of the way to allow Jackson to go downstairs, before taking off in the stolen Jeep. Outside, the pair watched as Jackson drove off, only for him to come back and speed up as he approached them on the pavement. 'Watch out, he's going to ram us!' the female officer yelled, before ordering her partner to 'Get out of the way!' Aerial footage captured the high-speed chase through south-east Melbourne during which Jackson reportedly reached speeds approaching 170km/h. Manoeuvring through dense, oncoming traffic, the Jeep could be seen mounting kerbs and median strips before he sped over police-deployed stop sticks. The pursuit ended when Jackson lost control of the vehicle, spinning out on Cranbourne Road. He then set fire to the stolen vehicle before fleeing on foot but was apprehended nearby. The incident, which left both officers hospitalised, has renewed calls for the Victorian Government to fast-track its plan to equip all front-line officers with tasers. First proposed by the former Andrews Labor Government, the state has earmarked $214million towards funding the rollout of upgraded Axon tasers by September 2026. Chief executive of the Police Association Victoria Wayne Gatt said tasers would 'definitely have helped in the situation'. The 25-year-old Jackson was charged with 28 offences including assaulting emergency worker whilst on duty, intentionally causing injury, recklessly causing injury and theft of motor vehicle. He was convicted of eight offences and three summary offences and sentenced to six years imprisonment with four years non-parole.

He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but couldn't be saved. Chow and the little girl were declared dead at the scene, and Chow's wife had minor injuries. The suspect continually zoomed through the center of the city with cops on his trail before someone reported seeing a naked man in their backyard. Officials raced to the area and found Nieneker naked on the street. When he didn't follow their directions, they tased him and put him in cuffs. Cops later found his clothes in a nearby porta-potty. Advertisement Nieneker was booked on Tuesday and looked battered and bruised in a mugshot taken by the local police department. Austin Police Department's full statement on shooting "On Monday, August 11, 2025, at approximately 2:15 p.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to calls of multiple shootings at the Target parking lot at 8601 Research Boulevard northbound. Officers arrived to find a male, later identified as Hector Leopoldo Martinez Machuca, in the parking lot. Mr. Martinez Machuca was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced deceased at 3:01 p.m. Officers also located a family including Adam Chow, his wife, and their 4-year-old granddaughter. Adam Chow and his 4-year-old granddaughter were pronounced deceased on scene. Mr. Chow's wife sustained minor injuries. Homicides Detectives and Crime Scene Specialists responded to process the scene and interview witnesses. The investigation showed Ethan Nieneker randomly attacked a Target employee Hector Leopoldo Martinez Machuca in the parking lot, shooting and killing him as he was collecting shopping carts. Nieneker then ran to a black Jeep Cherokee and began firing as the Jeep attempted to evade the gunfire. Nieneker then ran up to a gray Toyota 4-Runner where he shot Mr. Chow as he sat in the driver seat. He then fired into the backseat, striking the 4-year-old granddaughter. Mr. Chow's wife carried their granddaughter from the vehicle and Nieneker pushed her from the vehicle. Nieneker then drove the Toyota from the parking lot at a high rate of speed. Mr. Chow and the 4-year-old granddaughter were pronounced deceased on scene at 2:39 and 2:50 p.m. At approximately 2:20 p.m. Nieneker found a water truck parked alongside the 7800 block of Mopac Expressway. He opened the driver's door and repeatedly assaulted the driver before pushing him out of the vehicle. He attempted to put the truck into drive but was unable to. He pushed the female driver of the Volkswagen out and then drove off. At 2:34 p.m., a suspect matching Nieneker's description exited the stolen Volkswagen and went up to a Waymo vehicle and attempted to break into it. This failed and Nieneker returned to the stolen Volkswagen and drove away. At 2:58 p.m., APD received the call of a naked male walking through a backyard in the 2400 block of La Casa Drive. Nieneker was observed running into a 'porta potty' and then leaving on foot. Officers located Nieneker walking naked on Montclaire Street. Nieneker was issued commands, did not comply, was tased and taken into custody at 3:06 p.m. Officers checked the area, and the matching suspect clothing previously captured surveillance was located inside of the "porta potty". Mother accused of murdering her three-year-old daughter
A mother has been charged with the murder of her three-year-old daughter. Pippa McGrath, 47, appeared at Leeds Crown Court by video link on Tuesday, when she spoke only to confirm her name and date of birth. She is charged with the murder of Hope McGrath, whose body was found at a bungalow in Austhorpe Court in the Colton area of Leeds last Wednesday. West Yorkshire Police had visited the property after concerns were raised about the safety of a child. Neighbours suggested Hope had suffered with a disability and needed a wheelchair, The Sun reported. The court heard a toxicology report was likely to be relevant to the case. Judge Guy Kearl KC, the Recorder of Leeds, said a post-mortem examination on Hope was due to take place on Wednesday and that 'at least one of the issues will be the toxicology report'. The court heard psychiatric reports would be prepared to establish McGrath's fitness to plead. A date of Feb 24 was set for the trial, which is expected to take up to two weeks. McGrath was remanded in custody until her next appearance at the same court for a plea and trial preparation hearing on Sep 3. The force released a photograph of Hope on Tuesday Detective Chief Inspector Stacey Atkinson, of the force's homicide and major inquiry team, said: 'We are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Hope's death. 'A photograph of the three-year-old has been released by her family. I would ask that people respect their privacy at this extremely difficult time.'
