Countdown to Kickoff: Rejzohn Wright is the Saints Player Day 25

Wright hopes for another strong preseason to grab a Saints cornerback job
The New Orleans Saints will begin their regular season in 25 days when they host the Arizona Cardinals. Wearing No. 25 is defensive back Rejzohn Wright, fighting for a roster spot for the second year. Wright wore No. 28 with New Orleans last year before switching this summer. Our countdown series continues, with Wright as our Saints Player of the Day.
Out of James Logan High School near Palo Alto, California, Wright would play his first two years of college ball at Laney College in northern California. He'd transfer to Oregon State in 2020 and would be a big part of their defense the following year after a Covid-shortened 2020. In 2021, Wright had 2 interceptions and broke up 8 passes for the Beavers while recording 52 tackles. His tackle totals were down in 2022, but Wright again had 2 interceptions and broke up 9 throws, earning him 1st Team All-Pac-12 recognition.
Despite a strong finish to his collegiate career, Wright was not selected in the 2023 NFL draft. He'd sign with the Carolina Panthers, but was released in training camp. Wright was picked up by the Raiders midway into the 2023 season for their practice squad, but was released a week later. At the conclusion of the 2023 season, New Orleans signed Wright to a reserve/future contract.
Wright had a solid preseason for the Saints in 2024 and looked like a possibility for a roster spot. However, an injury sustained in the third preseason game ended his year with a trip to injured reserve. Rejzohn Wright is again in the mix for a cornerback job with the Saints. He'll have to shine on special teams, but will also have to outperform several other corners at a position that will have a vastly new look this season for New Orleans.

Travis Hunter limited in practice, may not play Sunday

Jaguars wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter is dealing with his first NFL injury. Hunter did not do any team work because of what head coach Liam Coen said at a press conference was an "upper-body deal." Coen said that the decision to limit his workload was "precautionary" and that the team is still working out whether Hunter will play against the Saints in New Orleans on Sunday. "We'll figure that out," Coen said. "We don't know yet." Hunter played 10 offensive snaps and eight defensive snaps in the Jaguars' first preseason game. Coen said that the team has not determined how much starters are going to play this weekend, but the precautionary approach means Hunter's playing time will likely be limited if he does get on the field.

Purdue Boilermakers snuck an awesome Drew Brees Easter egg into sports logo redesign

Now this is cool. Drew Brees always looked his best in black and gold -- not just in his New Orleans Saints career, but at the college level with his Purdue Boilermakers, too. And his alma mater snuck in a fantastic Easter egg as a nod to the legendary quarterback in a recent refresh for their athletics logos. Purdue's hardhat-wearing mascot, aptly named Purdue Pete, hasn't changed much through the years. But back in April the school introduced a new set of logos for the Boilermakers' golf, basketball, and football teams, each featuring Purdue Pete competing in those sports. And they picked a great pose for the windup to throw a football, perfectly emulating Brees' own signature throwing motion. Every quarterback has their own technique. Some lift the ball high above their head, others prefer more of a sidearm, or a counterbalance with their off-hand. Brees has talked about changing his throwing motion after turning pro, widening his feet to produce a quicker release. With his left hand splayed and lining up with his forward planted leg, Brees drove off his back foot to push the ball downfield. It's a technique that won him the all-time NFL passing yards record, among dozens of others, before he called it a career. Now he's up for enshrinement at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. And it's a really nice gesture from Purdue's athletics department. Brees led the Boilermakers to hard-fought wins over Michigan, Northwestern, and Ohio State in 2000, which earned Purdue's first Rose Bowl invitation since 1967. Brees left college with Big Ten conference records in everything from passing yards to touchdown passes, and he was inducted to the school's Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame back in 2009. Not bad for someone a lot of people said was too short to play QB.

Saints Play of the Day: Marshon Lattimore's creative interception vs. Falcons

The New Orleans Saints are just 23 days away from the kickoff of their 2025 season. Our Saints Play of the Day celebrates one of the franchise's best to don the No. 23 jersey in cornerback Marshon Lattimore. You can watch the play for yourself here. Lattimore spent 2017 to 2023 in New Orleans before the Saints traded him to the Washington Commanders last season. He has been beaten up by injuries over the past couple of years, but he has built a reputation for himself as one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, when healthy. The specific play we are highlighting today came back in Week 16 of the 2017 season against the rival Atlanta Falcons. If the Falcons wanted to win the NFC South, this would be a must-win game. The Saints made sure that was not going to happen. Most of the first half was fairly uneventful, but New Orleans did have a 6-0 lead. Atlanta was driving past midfield until, with just under a minute left, Matt Ryan targeted Marvin Hall over the middle of the field. The ball deflected off of Hall's hands and landed on the backside of a diving Lattimore. The cornerback was able to secure the ball and created what has become known as the "butt interception." The Saints were able to put together a 54-yard touchdown pass from Drew Brees to Ted Ginn Jr. on the ensuing drive, pushing the score to 13-0 before the half. New Orleans won the game 23-13 and clinched the NFC South.
