James Gunn Just Debunked A Popular Lex Luthor Theory, And I'm Relieved

The superhero genre continues to be wildly popular, and all eyes are on what DC co-CEO James Gunn has up his sleeve for the new DCU. The first slate of projects is titled Gods and Monsters, debuting in theaters with the Superman movie. Hype for the upcoming DC movie is real, and James Gunn recently debunked a rumor about Lex Luthor. As a fan, I've got to say I'm relieved.
What we know about Superman is limited, and largely based on its limited footage. So fans are filling in the blanks, resulting in a number of theories and rumors swirling around online. While talking to fans on Threads, Gunn confirmed that we wouldn't be getting origin stories for the Superman cast, but that we will not see a certain version of Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor. As he put it:
There are no origins but Lex is not President.
There you have it. While it remains to be seen how/why Lex Luthor will stand in Superman's way in the forthcoming blockbuster, he won't have the full power of the President of the United States. Instead we'll seemingly be getting a private citizen with a huge amount of resources at his disposal.

The full Superman trailer just dropped, and offers clear glimpses at the ensemble cast James Gunn brought together. The footage is thrilling, although the specifics of the story are largely under wraps. Superman's morality is going to be at the heart of the narrative, but the specifics of his dynamic with Lex is unclear. As a reminder, you can re-watch the limited footage below:
James Gunn gave Nicholas Hoult the role of Lex because he seemed so full of hatred during auditions, so it sounds like the X-Men alum is going to be firing on all cylinders for Superman. And he'll presumably be a major villain in the entire DCU as a whole, especially since Gunn and company are putting so much focus on serialized storytelling.
We've only seen a few very brief appearances of Hoult as Lex Luthor, as James Gunn and company have been keeping the movie's contents close to the chest. That should change as we get close to Superman's release this July, but the choice to not put out a full length trailer until recently seems purposeful.
The DC Universe is still in its infancy, but we've already seen connection between its first two projects. Creature Commandos voice actor Karl Urban is making the leap to live action as Rick Flag Sr. in Superman, as well as Season 2 of Peacemaker. So the narrative possibilities feel pretty endless.
Superman will hit theaters on July 11th as part of the 2025 movie release list. We'll just have to wait and see what Nicholas Hoult will bring to the table as Lex Luthor.

‘Fortnite' Is Down: Here's When Servers Come Back Online For Season 3

Fortnite Season 3 Fortnite servers have gone dark following the massive Death Star Sabotage live-event. The short, five-week Season 2 which featured all Star Wars content has come to an end, and the new Superman-themed Season 3 is about to begin. Typically new seasons of Fortnite kick off in the middle of the night or early morning, but Season 3 is slated to launch this evening, and possibly as early as this afternoon if you're on the West Coast. Server downtime is typically three or four hours, so with the game going down at roughly 2:30pm ET / 11:30am PT we could see Season 3 go live as early as mid-afternoon. Update: According to the in-game timer at the end of the live-event, downtime will last 5.5 hours, meaning Season 3 will launch at 8pm ET / 5pm PT. The new season brings James Gunn's Superman to the Battle Pass. The new model is based on David Corenswet's Man of Steel. The suit looks pretty good on this Fortnite version of the character. We also get Robin and Jonesy this season, along with other skins. Crossovers will be abundant, as per usual, with One Punch Man and Squid Game skins headed to the game. You can read all about the new items, weapons and POIs headed to Season 3 right here. Fortnite is now available on more devices than ever for Season 3, with the game returning to mobile devices and launching on the Nintendo Switch 2. Players were able to load in early and play a Tie-Fighter vs X-Wing dogfighting game for a couple hours prior to the event going live which was pretty fun. I had no trouble getting into the event this time, which is a nice change of pace from many previous Fortnite events. New on Netflix June 7-13: our TV expert picks 6 new movies and shows to stream this week

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. It's documentary week over at Netflix — unofficially, I might add, but with the start of a two-month season of documentary films and several other high-profile non-fiction releases, it's a great time to catch up on events in the real world. I'm What to Watch's streaming editor and every week, I look through the list of what's new on Netflix to create a curated list of the new Netflix Originals you should be watching. I only include ones that would be worthy of our lists of the best Netflix shows and best Netflix movies, bringing you only the top picks. This week my list covers new uploads arriving between Saturday, June 7 and Friday, June 13, inclusive. If you like the sound of something, add it to your watchlist, but even if it's not out yet Netflix hosts landing pages to near releases which you can use to set a reminder for when it releases. The docu-craze isn't exclusive to Netflix with most other streaming services focusing on non-fiction. The reason is that, during the summer months, there's often a lull in fiction and drama releases, however I've also included a romantic sci-fi movie and an action series if you want something that's fictional. So let's find you something to watch on Netflix this week... Netflix begins a season of one-per-week documentary movies about headline events with The Astroworld Tragedy, about a well-reported tragedy from 2021. TAT tells the tale of the 2021 crowd crush at the Astroworld music festival which ended in the deaths of 10 people. It examines what happened from the perspective of survivors and first responders featuring plenty of interviews along the way. Releases on Tuesday, June 10 Next up we've got a 90-minute movie from Mexico that Netflix is billing as a sci-fi-rom-com. Our Times is about two married physicists in 1966 who are a bit too good at their job, and accidentally end up travelling to 2025. One loves the modern day yet the other wants to return to the past, and they have to question whether their marriage is worth more than living in the time they feel comfortable. Releases on Wednesday, June 11 Our next documentary of the week is a French docuseries about a worldwide topic. Ahead of release there's no word on how many episodes. Cocaine Air: Smugglers at 30,000ft is about four French people who were arrested at Punta Ana airport in 2013 after they were discovered smuggling 700kg of cocaine. While none of them fit the bill of a drug smuggling heavyweight and they all pleaded innocence as to the owner of the coke, it prompted officials to dig deeper into what was happening. Releases on Wednesday, June 11 Here's a new documentary which likely needs no introduction: Titan: The OceanGate Disaster is Netflix's long-awaited movie about the infamous OceanGate submersible implosion from 2023. Titan will tell the story of the OceanGate company as its figurehead Stockton Rush tried to pioneer the industry of deep-sea tourism. This culminates in the Titan sub's disappearance which the documentary will also explore in detail. Releases on Wednesday, June 11 For a hot minute in 2023, Netflix crowned Arnold Schwarzenegger its "Chief Action Officer" as the Governator seemed poised to renew his career on the streamer. In practice this only really resulted in his TV show Fubar which gets a second season this week. In Fubar, Schwarzenegger plays a retired CIA operative who comes in from the cold and is forced to team up with his estranged daughter and her team of strange characters. In season 2 he's forced to save the world from a past lover with a bone to pick, but this nemesis is just as interested in ruining his relationships as the world. Releases on Thursday, June 12 The latest international version of Netflix's Too Hot To Handle is here, and it features a cast of 10 Spaniards looking for romance... or something else. As always, Too Hot to Handle tasks unwitting contestants of a romance reality show with abstaining from physical affection. A grand sum is on the line but the amount will drop every time the contestants break the rules, and the series is no stranger to having every penny drained from the pot. Releases on Friday, June 13
