Kishan shines as Hyderabad defeat Bengaluru

Observer24-05-2025

LUCKNOW, India: Ishan Kishan top-scored with 94 not out as Sunrisers Hyderabad scripted a 42-run consolation win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League on Friday.
Kishan hit seven fours and five sixes in his sparkling 48-ball knock to help Hyderabad post a formidable 231-6 off 20 overs in Lucknow.
Bengaluru, who have already qualified for the playoffs, were bowled out for 189 off 19.5 overs in reply.
The win helped restore some pride for Hyderabad who have been eliminated from the playoffs.
"It was probably one of the best wickets to bat on throughout the tournament," said Hyderabad's Jaydev Unadkat.
"The message was to try and make things happen. Our bowlers were spot on." Bengaluru started their chase positively with openers Phil Salt and Virat Kohli laying a strong foundation.
Kohli looked in supreme touch, hitting paceman Harshal Patel over deep extra cover for four and then following it up with another boundary over mid-off on the next ball.
His 43-run innings was cut short when he holed out to Abhishek Sharma off left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey. He hit seven fours and a six in his 25-ball knock.
After a cautious start, Salt (62) opened up to play some delectable shots and delight the crowds at the Ekana stadium.
After Salt's departure, Bengaluru lost wickets in quick succession, including three in the space of five balls.
Pat Cummins (3-28) and Eshan Malinga (2-37) impressed the most among Hyderabad bowlers.
"They played very well. I didn't have any answers for their attack," said Bengaluru skipper Jitesh Sharma.
"We were rusty. The intensity was not there initially." Earlier, Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head gave Hyderabad a flying start, going after the bowlers with disdain after Bengaluru won the toss and put Hyderabad in to bat. But Bengaluru fought back, with Lungi Ngidi having Abhishek caught at backward square leg by Salt for 34.
Abhishek smashed three fours and three sixes in his 17-ball knock. Head (17) was out soon after, with Hyderabad being reduced to 54-2 by the fifth over.
Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen (24) then rebuilt the innings with a 48-run stand off 27 balls for the third wicket.
A quickfire 26 off just nine balls by Aniket Verma provided momentum to Hyderabad innings but the day belonged to Kishan.
The left-hander punished the lacklustre Bengaluru bowlers, as Hyderabad smashed 43 runs in the final three overs. — AFP

India: Four arrested for deadly cricket stampede

Police in Bengaluru, India's tech capital, arrested four individuals early Friday for the roles in a deadly fan crush that occurred on Wednesday while the local cricket team Royal Challengers Bengaluru was celebrating its T20 Indian Premier League (IPL) championship victory. The team offered free tickets to a trophy celebration at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, saying the number of tickets would be limited. Officials say the stadium has a capacity of 35,000 people, "but 200,000-300,000 people came." In the end, 11 people were killed and 47 injured as fans without tickets attempted to push their way into the venue in what Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called an "absolutely heartrending" incident. State officials on Friday announced that "legal action has been taken against the representatives of the RCB" as well as the event organizers and the state cricket association. Local media have reported that the four face charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, among others. Officials suggested that senior police may also be subject to punishment for their roles as well. Wealthy Indian Premier League cricket cutting corners on fan safety? The IPL is the world's richest cricket league, with media widely reporting that RCB's T20 victory had secured it a $2.3 million (€2 million) match bonus. RCB has called the event "unfortunate" and offered $11,655 each to the families of victims, most of whom were men between the ages of 14-49. Indian Premier League ranks among the world's wealthiest in cost-per-match terms since selling a five-year global broadcast right package for $6.2 billion in 2022. This has led many in India to demand the league be more forthcoming about Wednesday's tragedy. The Indian Express newspaper this week wrote: "The world's richest cricket tournament can't cut corners when it comes to fans' safety. A fitting tribute to those dead, therefore, is not mere signing a cheque but holding those in charge responsible."

The High Court took suo motu cognisance of the incident and asked for a further status report. "News items have been published in various newspapers, narrating the tragedy that happened when 11 persons died and 75 were injured during the course of the victory celebration of RCB. This court is taking cognisance of the incident," the High Court said. "Senior Advocate Arun Shyam submitted that two events took place at Vidhana Souda and the stadium, let them give details of where the ambulances were deployed," the Court said. Issuing notice to the Karnataka government, the HC said, "To ascertain the cause of the tragedy and how to prevent it in future, we have also received communications from several persons on this subject matter. We issue a notice to the State government." The High Court listed the matter for hearing again on June 10. India: Several feared dead after cricket stadium stampede

Several people were reported killed in a stampede outside a cricket stadium in Bengaluru, the capital of India's southern Karnataka state, Indian media reported Wednesday. The incident took place as thousands of fans gathered outside to celebrate a cricket match of the Indian Premier League. Broadcaster NDTV reported that at least 11 people had been killed while The Indian Express newspaper reported at least 10 deaths and multiple injuries. Local official says crowd 'uncontrollable' Deputy chief minister of Karnataka state, D.K. Shivakumar that he was not able to give immediate confirmation of deaths. "This is not a controllable crowd," AFP news agency quoted him as telling reporters. "The police were finding it very difficult." "I apologise to the people of Karnataka and Bengaluru," he said. "We wanted to take a procession, but the crowd was very uncontrollable... the crowd was so much." Local TV channels broadcast footage of police moving injured people to nearby ambulances. Fatal stampedes in India Overcrowding and stampedes of people are frequently reported at mass gatherings in India, often at religious events, where millions of devotees come together for a special event. In February, at least 18 people were killed and over 10 were injured in a stampede at a railway station in New Delhi, as crowds rushed to catch trains to the world's largest religious congregation, the Maha Kumbh Mela. In July last year, over 100 people were crushed to death in a stampede at a Hindu religious gathering in Mughalghari village in the Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh in northern India.
