Barcelona youngster steps up recovery from injury, trains with reserve team

Dani Rodriguez is one of the young talents who made their FC Barcelona senior debut last season under Hansi Flick.
However, his debut against Real Valladolid in May ended on a heartbreaking note as the young winger suffered a dislocated shoulder and had to undergo surgery.
Now on the road to recovery, the 20-year-old has been making good strides and is closer to making a return.
Dani Rodriguez trains with Barça Atletic
Indeed, according to Mundo Deportivo, Dani Rodriguez took part in part of Monday's training session with Barça Atlètic, marking another step forward in his recovery.
Rodriguez joined Barcelona's youth ranks in the 2020/21 season from Real Sociedad and has since established himself as one of La Masia's brightest prospects.
Last season, he played for the reserve side under Albert Sanchez and Sergi Mila, making ten appearances, scoring three goals and providing three assists – an impressive return given his injury setbacks.
The 20-year-old Basque winger caught Flick's eye last season and was regularly called up to train with the first team, before eventually making his debut in May when the unfortunate injury occurred.
Barça Atletic coach Juliano Belletti is hopeful of having Rodriguez back at full strength for the coming campaign as the side looks to bounce back from relegation to the RFEF Segunda Division.
Meanwhile, Flick is also keeping a very close eye on the winger's progress, and plans to have him continue in the first-team dynamics once he recovers fully.

Mbappé converts penalty kick as Real Madrid beats Osasuna 1-0 in Spanish league opener

MADRID (AP) — Kylian Mbappé got off to a scoring start in his second season with Real Madrid, leading the team to a 1-0 victory over Osasuna in their Spanish league opener Tuesday. Mbappé, the leading scorer in his debut with Madrid last season, converted a 51st-minute penalty kick to give the hosts the victory. A nice run by Mbappé through the right side of the area, followed by a neat cutback move, prompted the foul. The goal gave new coach Xabi Alonso a winning debut in his first full season with the club. The former Madrid player arrived before the Club World Cup to replace Carlo Ancelotti, who left to take the Brazil job. Alonso started the match with three of the club's new signings for the season — left back Álvaro Carreras, right back Trent Alexander-Arnold and central defender Dean Huijsen. Teenage forward Franco Mastantuono came off the bench to replace Brahim Díaz in the 68th, being loudly cheered by the crowd at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. Some fans had not been happy after the former River Plate player praised Lionel Messi — the fellow Argentine who was a star at rival Barcelona — during his introductory news conference. The 18-year-old Mastantuono had a chance to score in the 89th, but his shot from inside the area was saved by the Osasuna goalkeeper. Osasuna defender Abel Bretones was sent off in stoppage time with a straight red card for a high arm to block Madrid forward Gonzalo García. 'They dominated, we knew it was going to be like that,' Osasuna midfielder Rubén García said. 'We played a good game but couldn't get too close to their goal. In the end, they deserved the victory.' Madrid forward Rodrygo stayed on the bench the whole match, intensifying speculation of a possible transfer. The game was played Tuesday instead of last weekend along with the rest of opening matches because Madrid's players needed more rest following the team's participation at the Club World Cup. Madrid's attempt to delay its debut even further was denied by the league. Madrid controlled possession — more than 70% — but struggled to break through the tight Osasuna defense early, threatening with a few long-range shots. Mbappé had one of Madrid's best first-half chances with a curling shot from inside the area that just missed the top corner, but finally broke through with the winner early in the second half as Madrid continued to press forward. He sent a low shot from the spot into the right side of the net as the goalkeeper dived the other way. Barcelona began its title defense with a comfortable 3-0 win at nine-man Mallorca on Saturday, while Atletico Madrid squandered a late lead in a 2-1 loss at Espanyol on Sunday. Madrid was runner-up to Barcelona in the Spanish league last season. Osasuna finished ninth. ___ AP soccer:

Luis Suarez open to Inter Miami contract, retirement with Messi: ‘It could happen'

Inter Miami striker Luis Suarez is open to a renewal of his current contract with the MLS club. The 38-year-old former Uruguayan international is nearing the end of his current contract, which runs through the 2025 season. 'In football, you always have plans — sometimes they turn out well, sometimes badly,' said Suarez on Tuesday. 'But what I have to do right now is enjoy this stage I'm living here at Inter, and then, well, we'll see what happens afterward.' Advertisement Speaking to reporters ahead of Miami's Leagues Cup quarterfinal versus Liga MX side Tigres, Suarez was non-committal about his future, but expressed his desire to retire at the club alongside Lionel Messi. The two former Barcelona teammates have enjoyed relative success together in MLS. Both Messi and Suarez have delivered on the pitch, and their stature within the dressing room and throughout the organization gives Miami a level of gravitas that's rare in MLS. Messi has not yet signed his contract extension. All signs point to a renewal, as previously reported by The Athletic. Asked if his future depends on Messi's longevity at the club, Suarez was open about what he and Messi envision for themselves. 'I think we're both already quite mature now, and each of us will make the decision that's right for ourselves, thinking about what's best personally,' Suarez said. 'In my case, I can't say for sure, but what I can say is that I would love to retire alongside him, because we've been talking for years about retiring together. And it could happen, it's possible. But it also depends on my renewal, on his renewal, and each of us will make the right decision at the right moment.' After scoring 20 goals in his first MLS season, Suarez, who has chronic knee problems, has not been nearly as prolific in 2025. He has six goals for Miami this regular season, but he has added 10 assists. Suarez is among the club's all-time leaders in that category, which prompted the mercurial striker to joke about his production thus far. 'I'm a generous number nine,' he said. 'But when I don't score, I still get angry.' 'But I'm very self-critical with myself, and I know that sometimes I can — not that I can give more, but that I can contribute more to the team,' Suarez continued. 'And sometimes, because of circumstances or because of poor finishing, bad moments — which are normal in football — I don't get to help in that part.' Advertisement Suarez admitted that this season has been more difficult for him in terms of his fitness. He said that the MLS offseason, which for Miami began in November of 2024 and ended in February of 2025, stunted his fitness at the start of this season, which so far has included the MLS regular season, a Concacaf Champions Cup semifinal run and the Club World Cup, which saw Miami progress to the round of 16. 'It takes time for the body to readapt to all the physical demands,' said Suarez. 'The high-intensity training — that's when I felt it the most. After that, as the matches went on, that's when you start feeling better. The more games you play, the more rhythm you gain. That idea that playing too many games makes it harder to recover — it's kind of a myth. I never really suffered from that.' Suarez, though, is facing the end of his illustrious career. The Uruguayan legend has a trophy case filled with more than 20 club titles and a litany of individual awards. His physical limitations are evident, but while Suarez has slowed down, his competitive spirit appears to be the root cause of his willingness to perhaps play one more season in Miami. For a player who many thought would struggle mightily in a fast-paced, transition-first league, Suarez has quieted at least some of his detractors. Ultimately, though, Suarez knows that Miami is expected to win every game they play in. 'If we approach games the way we did at the Club World Cup, we can win the Leagues Cup and MLS Cup,' he said. 'The thing is, we're very demanding with ourselves,' Suarez stressed. 'A lot of people criticize or think that in MLS, players come to retire or to take it easy, like they're on vacation. But you can see that's not the case. I'm still swearing on the field, I still get heated, my teammates too.' 'But that's because we have that competitive DNA of wanting to win no matter what we're competing in,' he added. 'And we're always going to carry that — that's what brought us to the highest level of our careers, and we'll keep being that way until the end.' Spot the pattern. La Liga Matchweek 1 Roundup: Barcelona Take Top Spot Early On

Spanish soccer returned in style with an action-packed matchweek one to start the 2025/26 La Liga season. With all 20 teams in action, it is defending champion Barcelona who have ended up topping the pile after a 3-0 win over Mallorca in the Balearic Islands. Elsewhere, Real Oviedo made their long-awaited return to the top flight action and it seemed to be going perfectly until Salomón Róndon missed a penalty, and Villarreal then showed the distance in quality between the two teams to secure a 2-0 win. Real Madrid also began the Xabi Alonso era in La Liga with a 1-0 win over Osasuna, also with new coach Alessio Lisci, as Los Blancos required a Kylian Mbappé penalty to open the scoring. Sevilla also welcomed new coach Matías Almeyda in a thrilling 3-2 defeat to Athletic Club. There were surprises in store as Atlético Madrid crashed to a 2-1 defeat away to Espanyol and lowly Getafe, with not even a full squad of players available, beat Celta Vigo 2-0 on the road. The storylines of La Liga matchweek one Beyond the goals, assists and tackles, there can be little arguing with the star of the show in this opening weekend being Santi Cazorla of Real Oviedo. Having returned to his boyhood club for one last hurrah and helping them earn promotion back to Primera, it was poetic that he would start what is likely to be his final season back at his former club Villarreal. Coming off the bench with his team already well-beaten, Cazorla was given a hero's welcome, as he is likely to receive at stadiums across Spain this season. Atlético Madrid had never lost an opening game of the season under Diego Simeone until they headed to take on Espanyol on Sunday night, a side who battled relegation last season. While Atleti have invested in their squad and gave debuts to the likes of Álex Baena, Johnny Cardoso and Thiago Almada from the start, Espanyol have mostly picked up free transfers and bargain deals for the likes of veteran Kike García and Miguel Rubio from Segunda. Still, it was the Catalans who mounted an inspiring second-half comeback to win 2-1, even after Julián Álvarez scored a magnificent free-kick to give the Colchoneros the lead. No-one can be envious of the job that new Sevilla coach Matías Almeyda has on his hands at the Pizjuán. Registration issues with a lack of flexibility in their wage cap means that the Argentine was left without several of his summer signings in the squad, and he was left with little choice but to field the youngest starting lineup of any Sevilla coach in their first game in charge since Juande Ramos in 2005 with an average age of 25 years and 245 days. Goalkeeper: Aarón Escandell (Real Oviedo). While Villarreal's Luiz Junior may have taken the plaudits for his clean sheet and penalty save at the other end, Escandell made an impressive eight saves to stop Real Oviedo's La Liga return from becoming even more of a nightmare. Right-back: Santiago Mouriño (Villarreal). Playing in a new role for his new club, Mouriño looked right at home. He completed 86 of 87 attempted passes, playing a key role in the attack bnd build-up, while also winning three of his four duels in what was a comfortable debut. Central defender: Dean Huijsen (Real Madrid). The pick of the bunch from Real Madrid in their Tuesday night encounter, he led from the back in building out Real Madrid's play with more passes than anyone else on the field, and almost got himself on the scoresheet with a powerful rocket from 40 yards out. It was a strong debut from the 20 year old. Central defender: Nahuel Tenaglia (Alavés). Playing, unusually, on the left side of central defence, Tenaglia not only produced a solid defensive performance with four duels won and nine clearances, but he also added an injury-time winner to get Alavés their first top-flight opening-day win since 2019. Left-back: Sergi Cardona (Villarreal). Winning every one of his duels, creating one chance, delivering eight crosses and registering three successful tackles is a neat summary of how Cardona bossed the left flank pretty much on his own. Cardona has developed well at Villarreal, and he led the way again on Friday evening. Right wing: Lamine Yamal (Barcelona). A goal and an assist to start the season goes to show the potential that Lamine Yamal has for Barcelona if they are to defend their title at the first time of asking. He completed a match-high six dribbles and won nine duels to boot. Central midfielder: Pape Gueye (Villarreal). Benefitting from a new-look and rejuvenated midfield, few midfielders in La Liga were as involved as Gueye this weekend. Eight duel wins and an impressive nine long balls completed go to reflect how pivotal he was in the holding role for Villarreal. And he added a left-footed strike from outside the box to make it 2-0 to Villarreal. Central midfielder: Edu Expósito (Espanyol). It was hard to believe that Expósito had only played 90 minutes in La Liga four times since overcoming an ACL tear, but he bossed a midfield battle which put him up against four Atlético Madrid midfielders. He claimed the assist for equalizer with a poised delivery to Miguel Rubio to level the scoreline. Left wing: Nico Williams (Athletic Club). Completing a league-high eight dribbles and winning a total of five fouls with his pace and energy down Athletic's left flank, Williams won himself a penalty, which he finished off well, and hit the woodwork. It was a powerful display from the winger. Forward: Chrisantus Uche (Getafe). Involved in an incredible 21 duels, Uche was the man leading the line in tough circumstances for Getafe. Holding the ball up well, he teed up debutant Adrián Liso alongside him to score his first La Liga goal and then added one for himself in a hardfought win for the Azulones. Forward: Jorge de Frutos (Rayo Vallecano). De Frutos is not a centre-forward by trade, but with few options convincing Iñigo Pérez, he has filled in there for Rayo and with great impact. He got the opening goal against Girona and then won a penalty which also saw Paulo Gazzaniga sent off on the stroke of half-time. Coach: José Bordálas (Getafe). Getafe could only name seven players on the bench, three of them plus one of the starters being youth-team call-ups, due to registration issues. Yet they still came away with a 2-0 win away at Celta Vigo in a shock result.
