‘Reinvented Soul': Kia Syros gets the go-ahead for South Africa

MPV-styled Syros will slot-in between the Sonet and Seltos, however, an official date of reveal has not yet been mentioned.

Revealed at the end of last year as the successor for the Soul outside Europe and North America, Kia has confirmed availability of the Syros for South Africa well before the end of the year.
NOT and MPV
Classified as an SUV and not an MPV as per its name starting with an 'S' and not the MPV denoting 'C', the Syros adheres to India's sub-four metre regulations by measuring 3 995 mm long, 1 800 mm wide and 1 665 mm tall.

Its wheelbase stretching 2 550 mm, the Syros will be positioned between the Sonet and Seltos, thereby making it the direct replacement for the Soul that bowed-out in 2019 before the current third generation went on-sale.
Petrol only?
According to the confirmation report by Car Magazine, an official date of reveal wasn't disclosed, though projections point to the Syros possibly being a petrol-only affair so as not to overlap with the Seltos that offers both petrol and diesel engines.

As such, South Africa will seemingly be privy to the 1.0 T-GDI only that develops the same 88kW/172Nm as in the Sonet.
Sending the amount of twist to the front wheels falls to a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed dual-clutch, the latter potentially the only option the local market could get as in the Sonet.
Expected spec
While available in four trim grades in India, a more condensed line-up will be applicable to South Africa possibly with a mixture of the LS, LX, SX, EX and EX+ denominators used on the Sonet and Seltos.
Based on the Indian-market version, expect specification to consist of ambient lighting, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, LED headlights, a wireless smartphone, heated and ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, ventilated rear seats and an eight-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.

On the safety side, and again depending on the grade structure, the Syros will feature the following:
six airbags;
tyre pressure monitor;
360-degree surround-view camera;
Adaptive Cruise Control;
Front Collision Warning;
Lane Keep Assist;
Front Collision Avoidance Assist;
Lead Vehicle Departure Alert;
Blind Spot Monitoring;
Junction Assist;
Lane Departure Warning;
Rear Cross Traffic Alert;
Driver Attention Alert;
Hill Start Assist;
Auto High Beam Assist;
Electronic Stability Control
A drive mode selector with three settings; Eco, Normal and Sport, alloy wheels up to 17-inches and what Kia calls a traction mode with three settings, Mud, Sand and Snow, rounds the Syros off.
Speculated price
Likely to be selectively detailed within the coming months in the form of teasers, pricing for the Syros remains unknown, however, as per its placing between the Sonet and Seltos, expect it possibly start from around the R350 000 or R370 000 mark.

Chinese brand GWM teases Ferrari-rivalling supercar

A Chinese supercar to rival established brands such as Ferrari? Indeed, a high-performance GWM is on its way, with the Baoding automaker teasing its upcoming halo model on its 35th anniversary. While the name that will adorn this GWM remains unconfirmed at this point in time, the company is looking to put their name on the supercar map with this new derivative. Teased by the brand on a Chinese social media platform, the mystery machine could only be 'seen' underneath a cover. Though, despite very little information being revealed to the public, the car is expected to be powered by the firm's 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, which was unveiled at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show. The automaker's supercar project was confirmed in April by chief technology officer Wu Huixiao, who highlighted that the vehicle had been under development for five years, as it must not only deliver exceptional performance, but also remain reasonably attainable as far as supercars go. In addition to the expected PHEV arrangement – the internal combustion (ICE) component of which is sited midships – that will power the firm's halo car, it will feature a carbon-fibre monocoque chassis. Power and torque outputs, and performance figures remain unconfirmed, though Huixiao says the company's first supercar will outperform the Ferrari SF90. As a reminder, the Italian supercar's PHEV setup produces a total system output of 735kW for a claimed 0-100km/h sprint time of 2.5s and top speed of 340km/h. GWM hasn't announced an official debut date for its supercar yet. However, it is speculated that it will be unveiled before the end of 2025. Watch: Oops! Super rare Porsche 911-based RUF falls off car carrier

In what can only be described as a major 'oops', an extremely rare Porsche 911-based RUF fell off a car carrier when delivered back to its owner in San Francisco, California, following its return from RUF's headquarters in Germany, where it was freshly painted in black. So, how exactly did this accident happen? Well, this RUF Yellowbird's rear wheels weren't correctly fixed to the transporter. So, upon delivery, it rolled off the 2.4m-tall ramp and hit the ground. According to footage circulating online (watch the footage shared by Spike Feresten on Instagram below), only the rear bumper and exhaust touched the ground. However, the car was wedged between the ramp and the ground. John Clay Wolf wrote on Instagram: 'Sitting with a friend when he gets the call that his customer's RUF Yellowbird fell off the trailer. The guy had just sent the car back to Germany to have it painted black. It makes it all the way home to SF [San Francisco], then the driver forgets to block the tires – and this happens.' Based on the 993-generation Porsche 911, the CTR Yellowbird is one of the rarest models ever built by RUF – the car you see here being one of only 29 sold. As such, it's an extremely sought-after collector's car. In 2025, one example sold for $6m – a whopping R107m at the current exchange rate – under the gavel. The RUF CTR Yellowbird was the world's fastest production car when it was introduced in the late 1980s, with its 3.4-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six engine's 345kW peak power output allowing it to reach a top speed of 343km/h. A 1998 CTR 2 Sport is now heading to Broad Arrow Auctions' 2025 Monterey auction event, and is expected to fetch between R55.5m and R64.75m. Kia takes $570m hit from US tariffs in second quarter

South Korea's Kia said on Friday it suffered a hit of 786bn won (about R10.07bn) from US tariffs in the April to June period. Kia, the world's No3 carmaker with affiliate Hyundai Motor, said its operating profit slumped 24% to 2.76-trillion won (R35.39bn) in the second quarter from a year earlier. Kia increased US sales by 5% as consumers brought forward car purchases due to concerns that US tariffs would lead to higher vehicle prices. It also had solid sales of its new Carnival hybrid SUV in the second quarter.
