‘Reinvented Soul': Kia Syros gets the go-ahead for South Africa

MPV-styled Syros will slot-in between the Sonet and Seltos, however, an official date of reveal has not yet been mentioned.

Revealed at the end of last year as the successor for the Soul outside Europe and North America, Kia has confirmed availability of the Syros for South Africa well before the end of the year.
NOT and MPV
Classified as an SUV and not an MPV as per its name starting with an 'S' and not the MPV denoting 'C', the Syros adheres to India's sub-four metre regulations by measuring 3 995 mm long, 1 800 mm wide and 1 665 mm tall.

Its wheelbase stretching 2 550 mm, the Syros will be positioned between the Sonet and Seltos, thereby making it the direct replacement for the Soul that bowed-out in 2019 before the current third generation went on-sale.
Petrol only?
According to the confirmation report by Car Magazine, an official date of reveal wasn't disclosed, though projections point to the Syros possibly being a petrol-only affair so as not to overlap with the Seltos that offers both petrol and diesel engines.

As such, South Africa will seemingly be privy to the 1.0 T-GDI only that develops the same 88kW/172Nm as in the Sonet.
Sending the amount of twist to the front wheels falls to a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed dual-clutch, the latter potentially the only option the local market could get as in the Sonet.
Expected spec
While available in four trim grades in India, a more condensed line-up will be applicable to South Africa possibly with a mixture of the LS, LX, SX, EX and EX+ denominators used on the Sonet and Seltos.
Based on the Indian-market version, expect specification to consist of ambient lighting, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, LED headlights, a wireless smartphone, heated and ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, ventilated rear seats and an eight-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.

On the safety side, and again depending on the grade structure, the Syros will feature the following:
six airbags;
tyre pressure monitor;
360-degree surround-view camera;
Adaptive Cruise Control;
Front Collision Warning;
Lane Keep Assist;
Front Collision Avoidance Assist;
Lead Vehicle Departure Alert;
Blind Spot Monitoring;
Junction Assist;
Lane Departure Warning;
Rear Cross Traffic Alert;
Driver Attention Alert;
Hill Start Assist;
Auto High Beam Assist;
Electronic Stability Control
A drive mode selector with three settings; Eco, Normal and Sport, alloy wheels up to 17-inches and what Kia calls a traction mode with three settings, Mud, Sand and Snow, rounds the Syros off.
Speculated price
Likely to be selectively detailed within the coming months in the form of teasers, pricing for the Syros remains unknown, however, as per its placing between the Sonet and Seltos, expect it possibly start from around the R350 000 or R370 000 mark.

Kia takes $570m hit from US tariffs in second quarter

South Korea's Kia said on Friday it suffered a hit of 786bn won (about R10.07bn) from US tariffs in the April to June period. Kia, the world's No3 carmaker with affiliate Hyundai Motor, said its operating profit slumped 24% to 2.76-trillion won (R35.39bn) in the second quarter from a year earlier. Kia increased US sales by 5% as consumers brought forward car purchases due to concerns that US tariffs would lead to higher vehicle prices. It also had solid sales of its new Carnival hybrid SUV in the second quarter.

Subaru unveils new front-wheel-drive Toyota-based Uncharted EV

Subaru has whipped the wraps off the Uncharted, a Toyota-based all-electric crossover, which will initially be available in front-wheel drive. The Subaru Uncharted shares its e-TNGA platform with the new Toyota CH-R+, but receives Subaru-specific styling and chassis tuning to set it apart from the crossover/SUV it is based on. Significantly, the Uncharted debuts as Subaru's only front-wheel-drive model, with all-wheel-drive variants set to be introduced at a later stage. The FWD-equipped Premium model features a single electric motor that generates 164kW. The AWD GT and Sport variants will produce 544kW from a dual electric-motor setup. Subaru claims the more powerful variants are capable of completing the 0-100km/h sprint in less than five seconds. All trims utilise a 74.7kWh battery pack, which supports 150kW DC fast charging. Plugged into the latter facility, Subaru says the battery is capable of recharging from 10% to 80% in 30 minutes. An 11kW AC onboard charger that can be used to charge at home is also present. The single- and twin electric-motor models offer 480km and 466km of all-electric operating range, respectively, the company says. Inside, the Uncharted plays host to a 14-inch, touch-enabled infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto screen mirroring, dual wireless smartphone chargers, and dedicated USB-C ports for rear passengers. Standard safety features include the firm's EyeSight driver assistance technology, adaptive cruise control, collision avoidance alert, and a driver-monitoring system. Sport and GT trims receive X‑Mode, a panoramic sunroof, a heated steering wheel, a surround-view camera array, and distinct upholstery options. Shares in Japanese, South Korean carmakers jump on Tokyo trade deal

Shares of Japanese and South Korean carmakers surged on Wednesday after US President Donald Trump announced a trade deal with Tokyo that sources said would include reducing a tariff on Japanese car imports to 15%, a move that stoked optimism about a similar deal for Seoul. Shares of Toyota, the world's top carmaker by sales, jumped 13% while rival Honda advanced more than 9%. The lower tariff, from 25%, would ease the pain for Japan's most important industry in its most crucial market. South Korean carmakers gained on hopes Seoul would clinch a similar deal. Hyundai Motor and Kia rose more than 6%. The agreement with Japan, the world's fourth-largest economy and a pivotal US ally in Asia, is the most significant among several trade deals struck by the White House ahead of an August 1 deadline when higher levies are due to kick in. While Trump did not give details on the car portion of the deal in a post on his Truth Social platform, industry and government officials briefed on the agreement said it lowers the tariff to 15% from 25% on cars, which account for more than a quarter of Japan's exports to the US. However, it is unlikely to be all smooth sailing for Asian carmakers. Tariffs from Canada and Mexico remain in place at 25%. Mexico in particular is a key production hub for Japanese carmakers, including Nissan, and also home to a Kia factory. Nissan shares were up almost 9%.
