Sarawak Key To ASEAN's Green Energy Push

KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak-linked segment of the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) is shaping up to be a crucial enabler of regional decarbonisation efforts, supplying low-carbon hydropower to displace fossil fuel generation across Southeast Asia, said an expert.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reportedly said that Sarawak has the potential to become the main energy hub for Malaysia and ASEAN. The state could also play a key role in the APG initiative with its rich energy resources, including hydropower, gas and hydrogen.
Trung Ghi, Arthur D. Little Southeast Asia partner and head of energy, utilities, and resources practice, said the tripartite cooperation of this scale strengthened regulatory alignment and accelerated institutional readiness.
The move comes as Sarawak eyes a nearly threefold increase in renewable energy capacity to 15 gigawatts (GW) by 2035, positioning the state as a regional energy anchor.
According to Sarawak Energy's 2035 Strategic Plan, this expansion includes continued hydropower development, solar scale-up, and hydrogen deployment.
'The 15GW target is ambitious but feasible with the right enablers. Continued hydropower development, solar scale-up and hydrogen deployment will be critical. If realised, it would significantly boost Sarawak's export capacity while enhancing domestic energy security,' Trung told Bernama in a written interview recently.
Malaysia is currently exploring two cross-border transmission routes - one overland via Peninsular Malaysia and another via a direct undersea cable to Singapore.
Trung said the route that secures financing, permits and offtake agreements first is likely to move ahead. 'Cost-efficiency and geopolitical alignment are key considerations. A route through Peninsular Malaysia may be quicker and cheaper, while direct access to Singapore's premium market could offer higher commercial returns,' he added.

JS-SEZ development to spur emergence of satellite towns
KLUANG — The development of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) is expected to benefit not only areas surrounding Johor Bahru but also be felt across all 10 districts in the state, said Johor Chief Minister Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi. He said the initiative would lead to the emergence of more satellite towns, ensuring that no district is left behind in terms of infrastructure and progress. 'Bit by bit, areas surrounding JS-SEZ are beginning to experience the spillover effects of development. For example, the areas of Simpang Renggam and Renggam in Kluang are already seeing its impact. This progress will gradually expand to other districts. 'If Seremban is known as a satellite city to the Klang Valley, we expect Kluang to become one of the main satellite cities as a result of the JS-SEZ development,' he said at the launch of the Majestic Johor x Renggam Fiesta at Tunku Mahkota Ismail Youth Centre (TMIYC) Renggam today. The JS-SEZ covers major development zones such as Iskandar Malaysia, Forest City, the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex, and Desaru, with a total land area of approximately 357,128 hectares. The Iskandar Malaysia region also includes strategic areas such as Johor Bahru City Centre, Iskandar Puteri, Tanjung Pelepas–Tanjung Bin, Pasir Gudang, Senai–Skudai, and Sedenak. Further commenting, Onn Hafiz said that rapid development in the transport sector would also support connections between districts and the JS-SEZ, including the Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link Project and the Gemas–Johor Bahru Double Track Electrified Project. (Photo Credit Yonhap) SEOUL, July 6 (Bernama-Yonhap) -- A special counsel sought a warrant on Sunday to arrest former President Yoon Suk Yeol over allegations related to his declaration of martial law, Yonhap News Agency reported. The independent counsel, led by Cho Eun-suk, filed an arrest warrant request with the Seoul Central District Court against Yoon for alleged abuse of power, falsification of official documents, violation of the Presidential Security Act and obstruction of special official duties, among other charges, in connection with his declaration of martial law on Dec 3, according to officials from the counsel team. The specific reasons for the warrant request were not disclosed. bootstrap slideshow The counsel has conducted an intensive investigation into Yoon over insurrection and other charges since its launch last month. Most recently, Yoon was summoned and underwent several hours of questioning on Saturday. Yoon has completely denied the allegations during in-person interrogations, raising concerns about possible destruction of evidence or collusion with accomplices, according to the officials. Yoon is alleged to have attempted to block investigators from executing a court warrant to detain him in January. He is also suspected of directing the Presidential Security Service to delete records from secure phones used by several military commanders following his failed martial law bid. The investigation has further focused on suspicions that Yoon had hastily convened a Cabinet meeting on the night of the martial law declaration to meet the quorum required to enforce the decree. The treason charge, however, was not included in the warrant. The former president is alleged to have ordered a military drone operations unit to deploy drones over Pyongyang to fabricate a justification for declaring martial law.
