Mohan Majhi govt. to upgrade Puri into municipal corporation
The announcement comes in the wake of a tragic stampede near the chariots during the ongoing Rath Yatra festival, which claimed three lives.
Chief Minister Mohan Majhi said the decision was taken keeping in mind the town's growing population and the increasing influx of devotees over the years. 'The government has decided to upgrade Puri to a municipal corporation. The new corporation will include Puri town and seven to eight panchayats from the adjoining Brahmagiri block. Residents of these areas will be able to access urban-level services,' he said. The process for upgrading the municipality to corporation will begin from Saturday (July 5, 2025).
Mr. Majhi reiterated the government's commitment to transform Puri into a leading religious and tourist destination by 2036. 'To achieve this vision, we must invest in both new infrastructure and the upkeep of existing facilities. A prosperous Odisha is not possible without making Puri a prosperous, beautiful, green, and well-developed city,' he added.
In addition, the state government has announced plans to establish a world-class Shree Jagannath Museum, Library, and Research Centre. The institution will focus on preserving the historical, cultural, and religious heritage surrounding the Shree Jagannath Temple and its associated rituals.

"When in power, a facade of drama; when in opposition, chameleon's drama..! When in power, a mask of composure; when in opposition, a rage..! R Ashok, this description is a mirror of your self-deceptive personality," Siddaramaiah said in a statement. He reminded Ashok of a 15-day transport strike during the BJP's rule, when Ashok was Transport Minister, and alleged that Ashok showed incompetence by sitting with folded hands. "Weren't you the Transport Minister when the transport employees first went on strike for salary revision? For the first time in the history of transport organisations, you sat with folded hands and demonstrated your incompetence," he charged. Punjab BJP announces ‘Save Land, Save Farmers' Yatra against land pooling policy from Aug 17 to Sep 5
Sharpening its attack on ruling AAP in Punjab against the proposed 'Land Pooling Scheme', the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Wednesday announced a state-wide yatra titled 'Save Land, Save Farmers', from August 17 to September 5. The drive will be led by party's state working president Ashwani Sharma. Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, BJP's state vice president Kewal Singh Dhillon said that during this yatra, BJP Punjab will go village-to-village creating awareness among farmers against this scheme and mobilise them. It will meet the farmers who are already aware and struggling, and standing shoulder-to-shoulder, will support them. The yatra will kick off on August 17 from Patiala, and pass through villages in Malwa, Majha, and Doaba regions affected by the land pooling plan, culminating in Pathankot on September 5, he said. BJP leaders condemned the Bhagwant Mann government, saying it has launched a serious assault on the land of farmers. Through the land pooling scheme, the government seeks to hand over farmers' land to land mafias through backdoor means – which is completely unacceptable, they said. They stated, 'BJP stands like a rock with the farmers. Until the AAP government withdraws the land pooling policy, the BJP will continue to fight at all levels in solidarity with the farmers.' Meanwhile, BJP's state president Sunil Jakhar in a post on X wrote: 'The Punjab and Haryana High Court has granted a stay on Punjab government's land pooling policy. Although this stay is currently limited to a single day, considering the government's authority of unsuccessful litigation regarding policies detrimental to the public interest, it is likely that this initiative to acquire farmers' land will not withstand legal scrutiny. Consequently, the government is poised to face defeat in this case as well. Therefore it would be prudent for the Chief Minister to relinquish the interests of Delhi and acknowledge the sentiments of Punjab by withdrawing this policy.'

CM calls for harmony between forest dwellers and officials
Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday asked forest officers to refrain from corruption and create a conflict-free coexistence with forest dwellers while implementing the rules. Addressing the State-level Forest Officers Conference here, the Chief Minister told them to be sensitive while dealing with poor people. 'One-fourth of the State's population is tribal, and they mainly live in forests and its surrounding areas. It is the moral responsibility of the government to create a conflict-free co-existence for them and protect them,' the Chief Minister said. Stating that forest officers are mainly interacting with tribals, Dalits and backward classes people, the Chief Minister told the officers to be sensitive while dealing with these people. He said the forest officers need to involve more people in plantation and tree protection activities, like dousing forest fire incidents. Majhi suggested that forest officers undertake paddy cultivation in vacant spaces within forest areas in order to keep elephants within the forest boundary, so that they do not visit human habitation areas. The Chief Minister said during tree plantation programme, the officers should focus on fruits and flowers in inhabited areas so that the local people would be interested in protecting them. Similarly, in roadside tree plantation programme, Majhi suggested that officers plant useful trees. He said attention should also be given to the protection of wildlife. The Chief Minister expressed satisfaction over the protection of wildlife. He said, 'We have not achieved 100 per cent success. The officers should use new technologies where necessary. Take cooperation of voluntary organisations, civic safety forums and others for forest protection.' Majhi said the current government is adopting a zero-tolerance policy against corruption. 'Stay away from corruption,' he said.
